    I like how you show those honest moments of a project (you putting together shelves) where you try something out, then realize there’s a more efficient way of doing something. My favorite part of projects!

    Pro tip on the hanging storage:. Keep an eye out for suit bags and drycleaning bags on the free stuff listings. The shoulders of anything hanging for more than three months or so will get surprisingly filthy, even in a closet with a door.

      I usually put black trash bags over camping gear that hangs or things like life vests. Just cut a hole for the hanger top to go through. Seems like this stuff does get dirty even in a closed room.

      And if you don’t mind the fragrance, you can get febreeze scented trash bags meant to deal with trash odor that will help to keep your gear from smelling musty in the plastic.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention the low door knob 😂 should’ve cut the door in a way to keep the door knob normal height.

    • @WoodUCreate
      @WoodUCreate 2 роки тому +1

      It probably would have meant a lot more work too. I thought the knob height was strange. Instead of cutting off the bottom of the door, he'd have to remove the top of the frame, cut that down the amount needed and then the door too. Because the pre-mortised latch and door knob already there, you can't really move the door knob up or you'd have the ugly old hole and need the new one.
      An inch or two is probably ok, but 6", just too low.

    Few quick things for anyone attempting something similar.
    1: there are double 2X6, 2X8, etc joist hangers, so you don’t need to get one for a 4X4 and shim it.
    2: most joists are not milled very accurately, so while it is convenient to just nail all the hangers on and then drop the joists in, you will very likely wind up with the top surface of the joists not being coplanar due to the inconsistencies in width.
    3: it is a good idea to use pressure treated wood or a gasket for anything that is in contact with concrete, as concrete tends to be a source of moisture for wood.

      As someone who got into this 3 years ago and late in life, I'd recommend a good tape measure and graphing paper to plan out your designs. Like Adisson commented- math and practice will get you there. The tricky thing about lumber is a 2x4 isn't 2 inches by 4 inches. It's 1.5"x3.5". A 2x6 is 1.5"x5.5", but a 2x8 is 1.5"x7.25". Do a search for dimensional lumber size charts and that will help with designing and making the proper cuts. And as they say- measure twice, cut once.

I've been considering building a similar storage room at the back of my 2 car garage to separate my woodworking shop from all our other tools. Then I can add storage to the other side of the wall for woodworking tools. I wish I had that much ceiling height in my garage. Also, wetting drywall tape can cause it to bubble later down the road. Probably $1,000 bucks. 2x4s aren't that expensive. The plywood & the door was the most

    I just bought some heavy duty shelf brackets for my garage and basement storage. They were 30 dollars each. I needed 84 of them for the entire project. I should have went with plywood triangles.

    That's very nice storage but for those hanging shelf i personally would do notces so it goes little deeper to the wall, maby all the way to the back, but i guess it's not important since there is only storage boxes. That storage room makes whole space look a lot bigger.

    Nice storage space, Michael. I feel your pain on the cost of plywood. I have a few sheets of 5x5x1/2 baltic birch that I paid $35 for a couple of years ago and now they are $100.

    Great video! As you were building it, I thought it would have been sick to not drywall it in. Looks really cool that way, but I understand it's nice having enclosed storage away from work/dust.

    Great video! Carpentry is super zen to watch and I loooove organizing. I constantly optimize my small hand tool woodworking shop so i can fit electronics and even sowing and leatherwork in there too. Good thing it's only a hobby, I wouldn't make a living from just reorganizing my own workshop 😄

    nice project bit you really should have supported the end of thst rim joist where it met the other. The short one has no support under it. And you have a double floor joist straddling it. Just a storage area but still bad juju. Take a minute and put a stud underneath it.
    Overall it turned out great!

    To critique a bit :P But you could totally put a sliding place of a swinging door, and tuck it behind the giant metal cabinet.
    Would be a nice space saver and have it aesthetically cohesive with some kumiko wood pattern or plywood designs on it.

    Is that me or the door knob is at knee height? You could have saved plywood on the shelves for the plastic containers, the containers have a solid bottom, they could lay on a couple of 2x2.

    This is very unrelated to this video but I saw this video and this is my first vid that I've ever seen of yours and at the end of the video, I figured to myself that this guy's video style is pretty good and that you must have a decent number of subs. So I thought for a second and guessed 417k and scrolled down what in the hell...you have 417k. That's gotta be a lucky number right?

  • @ersdds1
    @ersdds1 2 роки тому +1

    Really nice build but I have a question. On the back wall (where the 2x6 was short) why didn't you make the seam over the vertical 2x6? ..where you put the double 2x6 floor joist. I believe that double is in fact depending on sheer strength of the rim joist screws in the wall and not compressive strength of vertical 2x6.

    • @karenmitchell6814
      @karenmitchell6814 2 роки тому

      I wondered the same, but I think the vertical studs are attached to other vertical studs on the other side of the wall. Where the seam landed was probably just drywall with no support behind it.
