- Stunning Rose-breasted Grosbeaks try to dominate my sunflower seed birdfeeder this spring. I have never had so many greedy grosbeaks. Watch also for the handsome woodpeckers and a surprise intruder at the end. Thanks for watching and God bless you.

Oh, yes, the black sunflower seed is their favorite! Unfortunately raccoons love it too, and climb my shepherd's hook and hang from the feeder, and break off the roosts. I used to love raccoons, but now I think they are pests. Lol.
Beautiful. Thank you for posting. I’m in south GA and one was at my feeders yesterday! Never happened before. Ever. Have also gotten a pair of indigo buntings just traveling by. A bunch of birds that aren’t usually here have been stopping by, and I’ve lived here 35 years.

What beautiful birds! Here in the northwest, we have black headed and evening grosbeaks.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment! I have always wanted to see an evening grosbeak. They are in the Indiana Field Guide, but never seem to make it down to south central Indiana. A couple years ago bird watchers said they were "irrupting" further south, but I waited and watched in vain. I would trade you a few rose-breasted for just one evening one.

Beautiful birds. I have never seen them before. Kind of bossy like a Blue Jay. Terrific video for people who just look at birds for relaxation, like me. I feed them but not able to identify a lot of the special ones, only the backyard variety.

Thanks for watching bb56. Yes, I am so blessed with all these avian beauties. I was so excited when the Pileated came in to the feeders a few years ago. I couldn't believe it. It was several years before the Red-headeds came in. Those two, along with the Baltimore Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Ruby-throated Hummingbird, comprise my five favorite birds.

Thanks for this delightful video! I had a male and a female rose-breasted grosbeak at my nyjer and white millet feeders yesterday. They ignored the shelled sunflower. It's the first time in the 20+ years I've lived here that I had any kind of grosbeaks. Since it was a single pair, I'm hoping they are breeding nearby and I'll see them again. I love your cameo shot of the foxer! I have trouble keeping any kind of sunflower seeds available because of the hoards of grays who visit. Because of the layout of my trees and house I haven't figured out any bird-safe but squirrel-proof feeding system. I live in western NY near Buffalo.
+CC Beroza You're welcome and thanks for your comments. Congrats on your grosbeaks. I hope you get a lot more. As you can see, my rosies love the sunflower seed. You might try sunflower seed in the shell. Maybe they like to crack the shell with their "gros" beaks. I put grape jam out for baltimore orioles and the rosies even sample it quite often. Good luck.

Lovely. I just ID'd a female (or juvenile) black-headed grosbeak at my mother's feeder. It was the first new bird I'd seen in months. I really hope she brings friends.

They certainly are. Very nice close ups. :) I had a few beautiful goldfinches, but they were crowded out by 30 or 40 house finches. :( Got so discouraged I took down my nyjer seed mesh sock (just like yours). I may try again this fall or winter.
I love the Rose Breasted Grosbeak. I had one this spring and got many pictures. I don't have as many as you. I would like to attract the red headed and pileated woodpeckers. I've seen a pileated from a distance but I've never seen a red headed. I love the Orioles too. I had one last year trying to find nest material. I don't live too far from you. I live in Frankfort, Ky.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Robert. Our grosbeaks are still here but not as thick as they were in late April, early May. Maybe they're nesting now, haven't seen any females lately. The pileated and red-headed woodpeckers really love the little suet cakes, so keep them out there and hopefully they'll come in soon. Good luck. keefry Thanks for watching, keefry. I agree and I'm wondering if the word for this vocalization is "mew." A definition for mew: a high-pitched crying noise made by a bird or a cat. I think seagulls mew, but not sure about grosbeaks. After about 9 minutes I'm saying, "Stop your whining." Lol. Can any viewers identify this sound?
Awesome video of awesome birds! I live in the middle of a Midwest city and the neotropicals just stop off in my yard for a day or so on their migrations to greener pastures. I have a birdbath/fountain I made myself which attracts all sorts of birds. I will move to a more rural area when I retire!

I realize I am very lucky and blessed to have such a large quanity of colorful birds. Maybe this spring I can capture both feeding frenzies simultaneously. :)
creatorwise : I've been watching bird videos quite a bit the past couple of weeks. I guess I'm tired of winter and need to be reminded that spring will eventually return. I'll be watching for your videos. Keep up the good work! (BTW, that Pileated was breathtaking!!!)

As far as winter in my Midwest neck of the woods, the male cardinals, chickadees, & house finches have been trying out their territorial songs in the early AM as I'm refilling the feeders and heated birdbath.The olive goldfinches are also more vocal. A couple of mornings ago, it was -8 and still the birds were trying out their songs of spring. Something about birds...

I live in the south but ever year spring and fall I have several pairs of Red Breasted Grossbeaks that visit my feeders, the stay about a week to 10 days and move on. I love my birds and have over 37 different species that stay around my feed all year. I love it when the Grossbeaks show up.
You are blessed to have 37 different species at your feeders, and several pairs of grosbeaks! I have not had several pairs since 2014 when I took this video. The woodpecker with the red crown is a red bellied woodpecker. The red is hard to see unless you get really close The red headed woodpecker's head is all red. Had a piliated woodpecker in our back yard one time.

They used to be more common in my area, but then I rarely see them anymore. Maybe once per year.
Saving our feathered friends as Winter comes. I set out Two feeders. One with Nyjer seed, And one with A regular seed mix! I'll keep it going through the awful Winter time!..And the very crafty Racoon & chipmunks & Red & Black Squirrels will have a chance at life too! I feed everyone!!

Yes, Dasdfjkl, the raccoons tore the roosts off the larger one I had last year. This one is a little smaller, and I have to fill it more often. Got it at Lowes. Thanks for watching.

Can you share some general information about your location?
I'm wondering about the timing of the migratory species, and of course the Pileated.
While the Pileated could be in our area of the country, I'm not sure we have enough trees.
Thanks, plgard. Yes, I counted 15 species in this clip, and we have many more that just couldn't squeeze in. LOL. I am in south central Indiana, near Columbus. The pileated is here year round, but the grosbeaks, baltimore orioles, and hummingbirds arrived April 20 and 21. We are blessed to have them summer here and bring their young to the feeders. We have all 5 woodpeckers, but the most common, the downey and the hairy didn't show up for the vid. I'm glad the red-headed and red-bellied got in though. Thanks for watching and commenting.

No, I haven't. Indiana Field Guide says they are irruptive, and move around the state in search of food. I've watched for them for years now, and very disappointed in not seeing them.

What type of seeds do you use? I use black oil sunflower and never get these results.
+Brian M I also use black oil sunflower seed, Brian. I don't know why I had so many grosbeaks in 2014. This year (2015) was back to normal. I never saw more than two at a time. They put on quite a show last year. Thanks for watching.

No unfortunately they don't ever enter Texas except maybe during migration but I don't live there so I don't know
no bird's around me to feed.. even though i had all the equipment and burning desire to feed them... i stay in the woods :-(

Yes it certainly was overcrowded, Carvin, and if it had continued any longer like this I would have. But the crowd dissipated and I have never seen it even close to this since. I am very happy to be so blessed to have captured this feeding frenzy. Thanks!
How do you get no blackbirds?
Oh, I do get blackbirds! They hit me hard for a few weeks, then disappear for a while. They seem to concentrate more on my suet cakes. I think these "whiny" grosbeaks may have frightened them away. Lol.

@@Alberto-tm1eb Yes, they work well for me. Several birds can feed at one time. Of course, it might cost a little more for sunflower seed because they go through it quicker.
