  • The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a vibrantly colored bird. Males have black and white coloration with a crimson chest patch and females are understated shades of brown. These birds are fan-favorites at bird feeders and are quite charming with their looks and beautiful songs.

Females enjoy singing to themselves for hours and have a beautiful mix of chirps, squeaks, and songs

They seem unique in the way they behave and move. They appear more sluggish when at the feeder, often plopping down for 10 minutes at a time. They're also way less jittery than most songbirds, even compared to the cardinals. Watch how they move their heads around to check their surroundings, it's more comparable to an owl than a songbird.

i swear a RBGR did a full on slide tackle to me while i was walking, i got to close to its nest but i didnt even see it. I would of liked them a lot more if that didn’t happen but they are still gorgeous birds

We had a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak at our feeder today. They came back here on April 29th this year, both males and females. Our first Baltimore Oriole was May 4th. May can be exciting when we have 6-8 male Grosbeaks at the same time.

Beautiful bird. So interesting to see how they differ from each other in terms of color.

I had learned that their song sounds like an American Robin with voice lessons and their call is like a tennis shoe on a gym floor. Pretty accurate I think! Thanks for the video :)

Lucky to photograph a male at my feeder last fall. A great addition to my CenCal yard list.

I want to see one so badly. They only pass through where I live here in central Florida on migration so I haven't been lucky enough to see one yet. See lots of blue grosbeaks, which are nice, but the rose-breasted looks so lovely.

Nice video 💛 I love when they come back in the spring! It's great to hear what they sound like too. I don't always get a chance to see who is making what sounds! 💞

I had some stop by my bird feeder during spring migration this year. I was so excited because I don’t usually get a chance to see them in the Carolinas. They are so gorgeous!

We had an orange-breasted Rose-breasted Grosbeak at our feeders last year, which was exciting! Thanks for the species spotlight, Derek!

I have seen RBGR in New Hampshire. Here in Washington, we have their beautiful cousin Black-headed Grosbeak.

I have been blessed with these beauties who frequent my feeders multiple times a day. I just put up feeders late last summer. This is the first full year of my feeders and I was overjoyed to have the Rose Breasted Grosbeaks show up in May along with Baltimore Orioles. Now their fledglings (of both species) are enjoying the feeders as well. The RBGB seem to be really comfortable in the feeders and stay for extended lengths of time, rivaling the Mourning Doves to see who can sit at the feeder the longest and much to the chagrin of the other species who sit on my fence and wait patiently for their turns. 😄

    I freaking love Rose-breasted Grosbeak ! 🙂
I got lots of great photos of them, while visiting South Padre Island Texas, but I'd SO love to get one in Cali. We get a very small handful of vagrants each year, and more often than not, it will be females or immatures.
Interestingly, we seem to get nearly as many Rose Breasted X Black Headed hybrids, as we do straight Rose Breasted ? Maybe because when a male RBG ends up here, he really has few to no female RBG to choose from ???

Thank you for your video. I really enjoyed it. My family and I live in a woodland area right outside of Blacksburg. We saw a Grosbeak last year and this year we have a couple males at our feeders. They are beautiful! I noticed their black feathers even have a richness and depth distinct from other songbirds. I agree with @stinkology. Their behavior is unique. The two we are watch seem much more relaxed and calm than other song birds.

Grosbeaks are confusing because some grosbeaks (e.g: evening grosbeaks) are finches and others (e.g rose-breasted grosbeaks) are cardinals

I love our Grosbeaks. We have many that come to our feeders every year and stay til migration. They are very gregarious and little frightens them as blue jays and woodpeckers compete for the sunflower. Next to the Orioles , bluebirds and hummingbirds these are our favorite to have as a yearly visitor and enjoy every moment of their stay.
