Willem Dafoe will forever be the greatest Green Goblin to ever exist nobody can replace him. Its his maniacal laughter, wise villainish words, and the villain smile makes him a true villian.
As he said in spider man 1 - attack his heart! This guy mentally breaks you down. Even when spiderman is punching his face in the guy just smiles and laughs as he takes pride in corrupting a heroic figure.
Villains like him don’t seek to kill or maim the hero (but don’t have qualms with it), their true victory is when the hero is broken or corrupted. They like to turn a heart of gold into black sludge. To leave nothing but a hollow shell, because it is simply a pleasure to them.
His origin, relationship with Peter, and attempting to ruin Spidey’s life are pretty much the only things he gets to do. As cool as his portrayal is, you only bring Goblin back unless there’s a new direction or purpose for him to fulfill.
I would've liked him causing some trouble in the MCU more. Concept arts had his hoodie being HAMMER tech merch, which I imagine would've hinted that in order to upgrade the glider and suit he broke into HAMMER after escaping, killed a bunch of people, and stole a bunch of tech. I'd like to see maybe some repercussions like maybe in Armor Wars they have one of the opening scenes or something be just the Goblin flying by dropping pumpkin bombs and laying waste to a facility (maybe the one Ned mentioned in NWH)

If there is a reason that motivates someone to do something, there are limits to what they'll do because there WILL come a point where an action will not align with the reason. That's where they'll stop. But Goblin? There's no reason behind his actions, just pure anarchy. Ergo, there is literally no limit to what he will do just for the sake of doing it. It's his boundlessness that is so scary.

Spiderman refuses and believes in the good of people like his uncle Ben and his aunt. A broken man seeking vengence on humanity vs a scarred man trying to save and find good in humanity. This is so poetic

Almost no one can step to Dafoe's acting. His skills go way beyond super villain roles and corny cape movies but it doesnt matter what the role is he always delivers

People sleep way too much on the "I was how she trapped you, fighting her holy moral mission(...)" quote. The pushing to be good, the expectation of sacrifice from a hero. I know that's the point of Spider-Mans story, but it also brings attention how Spider Man is also expected to be good and sacrifice things for others. It gives a certain "understanding" where Goblin is coming from.
