Whovians and tech-lovers, buckle up! 🌌 Today we journey through time and AI to experience two examples of the lost "The Daleks' Masterplan" story of Doctor Who in UNPRECEDENTED audio clarity!
🔍 BACKSTORY ALERT: The heartbreak of the lost Doctor Who episodes... Luckily, several loyal fans, including David Butler, David Holman, Richard Landen, James Russell, and the legendary Graham Strong, managed to record the episodes from their televisions. While Strong's "crystal clear" recordings have always been regarded as the gold standard, the oher tapes, although cherished, were noticeably inferior in quality even with masterful restoration by Mark Ayres... UNTIL NOW!
🔧 AI TO THE RESCUE: Ever imagined the Butler and Holman recordings competing with Strong's pristine quality? Today, that dream becomes a reality! Through AI wizardry, we've leveled up the Butler and Holman tapes, fine-tuning them to match the clarity and brilliance of the Strong audios. It's a symphony of past meets future, as every Dalek shout and TARDIS hum shines brighter!
🎧 Put on your headphones and let's compare the before and after, as we witness the soundscapes of lost Doctor Who reborn! Listen as roomy and distant dialogues become sharp, and each recording is transformed into a sonic masterpiece.
🤖 Whether you're chasing nostalgia with Doctor Who or the futuristic marvels of AI, this video has something for everyone. Step into this symphony of tech and television history, and immerse yourself in the marvel of audio evolution!

This is an example of what's possible, and we are currently working to restore the audio of this entire story. Episodes 2, 5 , and 10 exist, so there is no need for any work on those. Episodes 8, 9, and 12 were recorded by Graham Strong, so there is no need to do anything to those, either. Episodes 1 and 7 are complete at this stage, and we expact to have the remaining 4 episodes completed by the end of the year.

Interesting, doesn’t sound 100% like Hartnell and Marsh when it’s enhanced though.

Thanks, this might become viable on a more widespread basis before long.

Could you possible do this to the surviving audio of Ace of Wands? Would love to hear that in HQ

This is really more of a proof of concept than anything else right now, but I did a quick search for Ace of Wands because I'm not familiar with it. The audio I heard is too far gone for a process like this and all you would get out of it is garbage. There's not enough for the AI to pick up on. If there are some better copies out there it might be feasible.

How did you do that? What did you use?

It took several different tools. The dialogue and background were carefully separated using a combination of manual work in Audition and various online AI tools. Background sounds like the TARDIS hum, the Dalek control room, and the Kembel jungle (which is a stock BBC audio track) were replaced with clean versions. Dialogue was enhanced using Adobe's new speech enhancement tools, although it could be done better today with recent improvements. Then it's all mixed back together and mastered to -23 LUFs.
