Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Programme website: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01kqt9x A look behind the scenes of the making of An Adventure in Space and Time, a special one-off drama that travels back to 1963 to see how Doctor Who was first brought to the screen. Actor William Hartnell felt trapped by a succession of hard-man roles. Wannabe producer Verity Lambert was frustrated by the TV industry's glass ceiling. Both of them were to find unlikely hope and unexpected challenges in the form of a Saturday tea-time drama. Allied with a team of unusual but brilliant people, they went on to create the longest running science fiction series ever made.

As I see the portrayal of William Hartnell looking across the console at Matt Smith, I seem recall one of the First Doctor's early lines:

i'm doing a season by season retrospective, and i want to talk about Mr. Hartnell once i finish season 4, and the thing that worries me most is that I won't do it well enough. I know so many who love the series and i wanted to start from the beginning and make a guide for the long lasting things (like how Daleks started out in the second/third arc) now that i'm past the first regeneration i want to cover the character and the actor (i call myself the character investigator)
I love this show, and my small series is what i can bring to the table for the next generation of fans.

It doesent matter who the Doctor is. It doesent matter how the Doctor looks like. Its the Doctor either way. They say he’s alone. They say he lost it all. Gallifrey or not, the Doctor made remarkable friendships and memories the whole time.

It was perfect, the way they portrayed the struggle that all of these people had to go through in order to create such an amazing work of TV magic. Everything from the adorable relationship between Hartnell and his grandaughter, the show gaining its first firm footing with British kids, and Verity herself, unwilling to let the show fail without a fair shot, was very nicely conveyed. Matt Smith at the end was a beautiful touch, as was the 10th-Doctor-reminiscent 'I don't want to go' line when Hartnell finally moves on from the iconic role he helped to create. Seems all Time Lords feel that way at the end, don't they? The script was very well written, too.

This was a fantastic show. Had me all choked up in 50 ways. It was hard enough seeing "Hartnell" reach underneath one last time to turn on the TARDIS, and then to have him look up and see Smith was just something more. I think though that it might have been just a teensy bit better to see all the surviving Doctors rather than just the current one, no disrespect to Smith of course.

This gave me far more great appreciation for the show, and how it could have easily never happened in the first place. Also, this is why I really want Mark Gatiss to be head writer for Doctor Who.

This one came on here in Australia after the day of the Doctor and fitted in really well. I find it interesting that William Hartnell was the man they described for Dr Who, old stern man that people respected and a hint of magic. To see him at the start and connecting with his grand daughter and interacting with the kids in the park. He totally em brasses the role and I think that came across on screen, He is the original doctor you might say. It certainly has become an adventure indeed Mr Hartnell.

Also, God bless you Carole Ann Ford.

Having been born after the original show's run came to an end my only experiance with doctor who had been re-runs on UKTV gold and the videos the small number of videos that we had around the house, one of those being a box-set involving 2 omnibuses with the Daleks. The first one of the 2 that i watched was Sylvester Mccoys (7) "rememberence of the daleks", but the other one was William Hartnells "the chase". Watching this just brought back all those memories of watching the hartnell run, and seeing how much he embraced the role (knowing how the set should be run better than the replacement producer and technician was fun) and how much fun he was having doing it. I got teary eyed at the end, knowing the events that were going to happen of course, but it just hit it home. Hartnell made the doctor, and the doctor saved him. The scene at the end with the "i don't want to go" (a reference to numero 10-ant) just hit me. The cast chosen for this docudrama were perfect and i aplaude you all. This was truly a laboure of love for the doctor, and it deffinantly shows. :)

The whole production was a labour of love from start to finish. The actors were wonderful and the attention to detail was so exact. That console room set actually looked better than the original and I'd love to know which broadcast museum they hauled all that antique equipment out of for this film. An excellent celebration of the programme's legacy. Especially toward the end.
