An undocumented hidden feature of the Mirage is the ability to turn itself off in the middle of your set with a loud bang. Love them for drums, acid bass (that filter!), pads, voc samples, and random inspiration.
Your joy is infectious! Lovely video.
Years ago I bought an ASR10. While I am happy with it, love the effects and the usual stuff about the ASR, this is what I really wanted without knowing it existed at that time.
I’ve had 3 Mirages in my time. Loved them. They were a great price for such a useful piece of gear in the 80’s.
It kept so much energy in the drums as you pitched down! Many modern machines seem to lose the 'smack' as soon as you go down even a few semitones.
This was right on time! I just purchased one of these before stumbling upon this video 😊
my man TDS. loved this video dude. been eyeballing some mirages and eps lately.
Oh my God! You're posting again the same week I buy an asr 10.
Sold my og purple screen, scsi, max ram, oex6 like 15 years ago.... now I'm back! And so are you😊
Take your time. Take your time! Great stuff, Digi sources, analog filters.
Thanks TDS, I Luv these types of vids. Especially with the more rare rack mount samplers!
I recently got an ESQ-1 and it sounds like the same analog filter in use here :)
Yes, nearly. They're both CEM filters but not the same chip AFAIK. ESQ-M, SQ-80 and 4 x Mirage here.
I'm so envious that you scored a Mirage!
Very cool stuff. I had the DSK keyboard but unfortunately have Zero idea what happened to it. After I got my EPS 16+ life was a blur. 90's were interesting! 😅
Turned that snare into an 80's arcade game explosion sound fx. 🔥🔥🔥
Mirage is an excellent sampler, with very limited and basic functions, but it has a good filter, perhaps the envelopes are too slow for my taste.
I have the keyboard version and I love the sound it has so particular, the keyboard is sensitive to speed.
It has a very basic but very effective sequencer and it can be very surprising when you sample a minimoog and play the sample with 8 voices of polyphony, sometimes it gives the impression that it sounds like a jupiter 8 or a memory moog, but these are just tricks that They were used old school to make good pad bottoms.
The external recording quality is excellent for 8 bits, I remember that my Amiga 1200 Commodore computer did not record as well, but Mirage did better with 8 bits, in the video we appreciate the wear and tear of the sound, that worn out sound that we can find on typical discs from the first era of Chicago house or New York, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Mills, Aquaviva, Mike Farina, Saunderson, Jam&Spoon, Paul Van dyck... but in hip-hop, De La Soul, Atribe called quest, Arrested Development, Public Enemy, in Jungle 1993 DnB, IDM, Goldie, Dj Hype, Aphex Twin, Cold Cut, Hextatic, Amon tovin, Dj Krush, Rob Swift... they already used this sample for the drum sounds sampled from the Technics 1200 turntables.
If it is a sample that made the life of the producer easier when CMI and synclavier were samplers for professional music millionaires, while mirage was a Winner for the times, because it had that low pass filter very similar to that of a Fairlght, although the 8 bit made it cheap.
Many hip-hop producers and groups bought it and continued to use it heavily in the 90s.
It is the historical sample of that entire primitive era, the golden age of trip-hop(mowax, warp, ninja tune) also took advantage of ensoniq mirage, and now it continues to feel like a piece for the most detailed with hip-hop and Lo-Fi house, down tempo, reggae dub, electro techno.
Thank you for this video and information.
This new Amigo VST is only £10 and has real u-law bit compression. It is the real deal and sounds very similar. Also reads old Amiga sample format or wav.
I use to have one years ago, great FX when stretching vocals - cheers!
Love it !
Oh yeah!
Dope
I have one and have your manual!!
Mad Respect Bruv!!!!!!!
are you using it with default setting of two oscillators or have you adjusted for one? meaning, is p34 set at somewhere in the middle or is it set at either 0 or max. i always used at default setting (both oscillators) until i found out about p34 and think i like it for more accurate things like drum sounds because the two oscillator sound is the classic mirage sound it has a slight phase/smashing vibe, but with one oscillator you get the pure sound without a duplicate phasing on top.
also had you opened up all the filters of p36, p70 and p71? when trying to get clean sounding drums i keep all at max and use one oscillator (p34 set to 0)
I would put the two akais together and put the ensoniq❤ on top.
Funny machine....had the DSK......cooler than frozen whisky. Traded it in on a S2000. Big mistake. However, try to loop a sound in it.
Looping a sound is easy, getting a clean loop…
Ensoniq was so far ahead.
