As I was watching this video, during your MEa culpa about not remembering the abbreviation for Maine, I realized a subtlety in that clue “One runs from Me. to Fla.”: one is a number rather than an article here. US 1 indeed runs from Fort Kent, Maine to key west Florida. I grew up in Southwest Connecticut, a few miles from US 1, where it is known as the Boston Post Road. I now live in Wake Forest, just north of Raleigh, and still a few miles from US 1, which is named Capital Boulevard in these parts.

This one was my third ever full self-solve! Still came to watch your video, I like your commentary on clues I didn’t fully understand or got the answer with crosses so I never really got to think about the clue

I'd definitely watch that first NYT crossword puzzle video!
For me today it was that kashi/tin cross that gave me trouble. Never heard of kashi before, and my lack of wizard of oz knowledge regularly comes back to haunt me... (had "tan" in there for whatever reason)

Interesting that you got to the revealer as almost the very last fill. Also nice to see an enjoyer of a good Manhattan, which was the first legal drink I had and now I always get one on my birthday.

As english is not my first language the words "scarp", "garbs", "treys", "kashi" and "bah" gave me a lot of trouble but I managed to finish it and got my first gold :)
Loving the videos ! Been binging the older ones to get better :D

Irish stew is indeed called Irish stew in Ireland. Usually made with lamb, onions, potatoes, and carrots. A perfect hearty meal for the cold winter months, although I wouldn't necessarily call it a traditional Paddy's day meal here.

Umiak, the Inuit boat, is an open boat similar in shape (but much larger) to a canoe. It's covered in skins. It also has the alternate spellings of umialak, oomiak, umiaq and anyak.

According to a brief internet research, "able was I..." was constructed in reference to Napoleon, but not attributed to him.

Every time ETA(s) is an answer on the crossword, Chris mentions that ETA and ETD are common fills. But I don't think I've seen ETD in the crossword in the few months I've been following along. I've also never heard anybody use ETD, where ETA is very common

To me the issue with a rebus is it breaks the rules of a crossword, which is one letter per square with each line forming an answer. And without defining the rules on rebus days somewhere in the puzzle there is the expectation of standard crossword rules applying.

Ohio is the buckeye state, which is close to Hawkeye. Fwiw, a buckeye is a nut or the tree that makes said nut.

I gotta admit, even by Chris’ notorious standards of sports unknowledge, never having heard of Naomi Osaka despite her recent feats and foibles, on and off the court, is quite impressive. In the words of Ron Burgundy: "Heck, I’m not even mad, that’s amazing!”
Naomi Osaka is a 24 years old female Japanese tennis player who has won four Grand Slam tournaments in the past four years (the Australian Open twice, and the US open twice). She was the world’s #1 tennis player for 25 weeks in 2019, becoming the first and so far only male or female asian tennis player to reach the top ranking.
As of 2021, Osaka is the highest earning female athlete and eight highest earning athlete overall in sponsors and endorsements, not only due to her performances but also due to her popularity among younger generations following her outspoken support for social causes such as Black Lives Matters (she herself has a Japanese mother and Haitian father) and her advocacy for the better treatment of mental illness and depression among athletes (she herself has suffered from depression since 2020).
In Chris’s defense, she has not won Wimbledon (the British Open) yet, which might explain how Chris miraculously avoided her existence entirely from his current location.

I got held up on the clue “‘Como ___?’ (‘How are you?’: Sp.” I thought that Sp. indicated that the answer was spelled incorrectly and got held up for a while because I didn’t realize that Sp. meant Spanish

I reccomend that even a cursory glance at prominent contemporary athletes would help you out in the long term. Maybe go to Wikipedia and look up the last 20 years or so of Olympics medal winners for a start.

That’s hundreds of names. Think simply perusing headlines of sports news sites would at least get relevant names kicking around in the brain without being an overwhelming deluge.
