I have a highly addictive personality, alcohol, drugs, sex, toxic relationships, food. Anything that I can become extremely dependent on. I’m five months sober and this made me so emotional. Hearing someone say such positive things about someone like me was amazing. I always thought I was this horrible fucked up person, but to hear a highly praised doctor say that we also have such positive traits made me cry. Not only were they positive traits, but they are admirable. It makes sense why I always run towards danger to protect other around me. I never thought about that before, people just always said I was reckless and impulsive. Makes me hate myself a little less. Thank you ❤️

I go to AL-ANON because of the Alcoholics in my Family that effected me with child abuse from a step mom who was not a drinker but her parents were so she grew up mean and abusive…...Thank god for my program and One of my sons found recovery… People who drink like fish don’t realize that it also destroys the people around them emotionally . We cant fix them but we can work on ourselves to be the best that we can be

My husband died on our daughter's 2nd birthday. We woke up and he was dead beside us..to say it was traumatic is an understatement..not long after his death, I came out to my family and friends, that our entire relationship (14years) he was highly abusive...so I was all kinds of messed up...so I turned to drugs...I survived 2 fentanyl overdoses, and after years second one , it scared me. I almost left my my daughter an orphan. Within a week I started a recovery program, I started counseling, I moved and left everything and everyone I thought I loved behind. I am 2 months away from 5 years of sobriety. To me using drugs was hard, getting clean was the easiest thing I have ever done. I realized along the way how much I love myself, and how much I deserve to be loved and to just be happy. Addiction isn't spoken about. It's like a dirty little secret people just stuff away to avoid. Thank you for going there guys and gals..and remember recovery and happiness is so possible...Much love beauties..xoxo
Dr. Dew just watching him on celebrity rehab actually got me sober and I stayed clean for two years until something bad happened in my life I got back on nerve pills and then one thing leaded to other things. I just wish he done a whole podcast 12 episodes talking about getting clean from day one. Thank you DR, Dew
Great that you are speaking about this subject! Its hard work being an addict and it definitely doesn't make someone an asshole all the time! Many have been through a LOT of stuff and don't know how to deal with it so turn to whatever substance ( i believe alcohol is the worst one as people normalise it!) And change how they feel or try to! Keep on with your recovery! Take care and stay safe 👍😻✨
Such an important episode. Adding one point: the other benefit of AA is it tells you what steps to take if you relapse. This is SO important. Knowing how to get back on the horse/wagon. Also, trauma is like pus; lance that wound and drain that trauma pus!!!
kids can be so so cruel! I remember because I'm bigger the people I thought were "my friends" tried to pull my shirt off in the lunch room and I was mortified. I have a bunch of other issues my parents split up, I have major anxiety and depression. I have adult IED which is weird. so bullying was just added to my already horrible existence. I literally dropped everyone I knew after I graduated, and moved lol.
I just discovered this and the fact that Dr. Drew said nicotine is not the issue, it's tobacco, helps me so much. I smoked for so long, but I vape now and it helps so much. But thank you good ole Dr. Drew for verifying my need to vape... its a habit that's so hard to break
my dad was a terrible alcoholic throughout my entire childhood. i have loads of trauma from being around him through it all. i stopped going around him when i was 13, it was so bad. he got sober, on his own cold turkey, when i was about 15. i’m almost 27. we have a great relationship now, he’s one of my best friends. lately he’s joked more and more about having a beer again (beer is only what he drank all those years). i know you say to approach the illness and my need to separate myself from it with love but i just don’t think i could if he ever relapsed again. he knows if he drinks even just once, i’ll cut ties with him. everyone around me says he’s just messing with me bc he knows it gets a reaction but i know our relationship now.. i’m afraid he isn’t just joking about it anymore. ☹️
Great info. Alcoholism runs in both sides of my parents but luckily most of us could care less about drinking. A few were & are heavy drinking workers. Strange how they can go so long without it then BOOM they gotta make up for lost time. Working alcoholics is what my Aunt called it.
Wow, I’m only 18 minutes in and already I’ve learned soooooo f-ing much. Thanks guys, for sharing this conversation, because I start my own journey with therapy in March (long waitlist for sliding scale ppl lol, I signed up in November!) and Dr Drew has explained some specifics about the brain that help me understand the process and possibilities more. Will definitely ask therapist about stuff like this once I get started, and I’m a little bit hopeful now.
I also have the COVID BUG. I can't seem to get anything done. I go to work do my daily things but I just want to sleep and sleep. I was never like this before covid so I am trying to change my diet and exercise.

I lost my best friend to suicide as a result of alcoholism. I knew nothing about how to support him and am very thankful for this video.
