  • Unboxing the cool new DOBBY selfie drone from ZeroTech.com
    WARNING WARNING - ZeroTech now no longer offer warranty if you buy the DOBBY from some Chinese resellers.. frankly, I would avoid buying the DOBBY as its almost impossible to find out if they will offer warranty on the product you buy.
    *** Its important to realize the DOBBY is not a drone you fly-around with. its a flying shot-maker which are best for grabbing shots on the go when you don't want a big load. the DOBBY are best for dolly-shots, truck-shots and crane-shot. it sucks at panning shots. and the max range is roughly 30m as its limited by your Phones WiFi range.

    i'm planning on buying this little pocket drone, but i keep hearing conflicting answers.. people have been telling me that the camera end is actually the rear and that if you try to fly it using the camera the controls are reversed.. so are the controls backwards? or can the drone be used with the camera end being used as the front?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  7 років тому

      Yes there is a option to reverse the orientation of the aircraft, but people are right, by default the DOBBY is made to fly with the camera facing you.

      You can tilt the camera in increments, you need to pick that increment when you turn on the EIS ....

    funny approach ;) I also have the GX8 - great cam - but I dont have it on a copter :)
    I was also interested in the align copter - but read too many bad comments about it.
    so now I will continue to watch this vid...

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      You dodged a bullet with the 480, I had 3 flight controllers die on me. now I rewired the quad and am flying a SuperX FC. works great.
      LOL, well don't normally fly the GX8, but the GH was on the tripod and 85 is too light to balance the gimbal so the GX8 was the one.
      what I really wanted to show was how far this have gotten, 5 years ago we would have thought the video from the DOBBY was fantastic, and we were flying moster size rigs to get video back then. now we have things like the inspire with X5 camera which pretty much do the job of my 480 most of the time. and I think in a couple years we will get rock solid 4K video from devices looking a lot like the DOBBY. just a matter of time.
      But Im glad you and I had the fun we had flying "stuff" we build years ago.. that was good times.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      3 controllers dying on me is a bit too much. and several friends who were flying the 480 and 680 (I think that was the number) had bizarre crashes, like flyaway at 50feet that resembled a RTH event. I love the 480 its a good airframe but I'm afraid of the electronics.

    Hi Bo, another great review video. What is the specs on your modified Align ML480?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому +1

      Hey Andy, its pretty much a stock 480, however rewired to avoid the crappy wires (hard single lead) used by Align, also yanked out the crap FC and replaced it with a SuperX, the superX have not "smart-features" but are super smooth in manual and have a nice solid hold in GPS hold mode if you need to take a break from flying.

    • @andyn8998
      @andyn8998 8 років тому

      +Bo Lorentzen Thx Bo. Great looking platform for the GH series camera. Are the motors stocked as well?

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      Stock motors, the motors and props actually perform great.
      Note the stock gimbal sucks its completely useless for serious video production, I think this is a TP500 gimbal.
      Basically the general airframe is awesome, Ive added FPV camera on the top for flying long-range and there is 360 deg of freedom for the camera operator if the legs are retracted, however I mostly fly legs down and use the camera in follow-mode.
      The gimbal controller is the center-stage controller. so basically.. the "stuff" on the quad is worth a lot more than the quad hardware ha ha.

      @bophoto  8 років тому

      WOW Andy, thats is one seriously sweet rig.

    great review and cool drone! btw: the Wingsland S6 might be similar. I think both are using the new Snapdragon flight chipset.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      Yeah very much looking forward to seeing the WingsLand. I really think this is probably just the first of a whole wave of pocket size consumer drones. and likely in a few years we will be using these for broadcast news video.

    • @weltraumkuh
      @weltraumkuh 8 років тому +1

      I agree and I think with Snapdragon flight there will be many small, cheap and good drones. But I am not so sure about EIS video quality because the Bebop drone uses it for around 2 years now and quality was only slightly better in second version and is still better than the one from Dobby I think. Maybe a micro gimbal is a better solution like one from the Vantage Robotics Snap combined with some little EIS.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому +1

      Yeah you are probably right, I could envision maybe a single axis gimbal managing say the roll. and letting EIS manage the pitch / pan stability. I think in the long run we will see amazing EIS, but we are not there yet.
      Looking forward to seeing the SNAP, its really one of the most interesting new drones right now. and I love the gimbal setup. but for the average consumer gimbals is more moving parts.. for me its better 4K video.

    @AndyRCchannel 8 років тому

    id say the 720p observation was incorrect. looks like 1080p to me on my one especially when i compare to my phones 1080p camera. maybe because you are using EIS. with it disabled. definitely 1080p

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому +1

      Andy, I love to agree with you, but I just can't, shot the same video with and without EIS, sitting on a box and with my iPhone next to it, when examining the files there is a significant lack of details int he DOBBY files.
      *I do realize that the DOBBY files are saved as 1080p pixel dimension files. they are just lacking details.

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel 8 років тому

      you need a really calm day with no wind to use the video un-stabilized yes :) and when eis is turned on you lose quality because the EIS will blur the image when the quad jerks (which is does quite a lot) cheers

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      Totally agree. Im still really liking the DOBBY issues and all. its simply a very agreeable little quad.

    I didn't know you had a Align 480.
    Isn't ashamed Align stopped development on the 470, 480 and 690? After all these R&D time, they come with a great base and then pulled out.
    Next step was to build a full controller like Yuneec did and they would have to best product for serious flyers.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      Its a shame, the hardware was great, only their flight-controller was spectacularly crappy. it actually worked perfect when it worked, very good flying experience, but I had 3 controllers die on me so its simply not safe.
      They should have kept the airframe and done a rev-2 electronics.

    • @BenHayat
      @BenHayat 8 років тому

      The frame was awesome. Actually the design of the frame was a copy of a German company who did it originally for military use. Very nice, and then all these Chines companies copied it.
      There was another great design from Germany that it was a Hexa on frame shaped like "A". But they got patent on that design.
      Man, you got allot of toys and money spent on them

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому

      Yeah agree, that frame was (and is) awesome, good stability and strength, unfortunately Align have never been known for their electronics, and still are not making good electronics. but their T-rex frames are awesome.
      YEAH I know that H-A frame hexa and octo, those are a great design, and very interesting for traveling.
      LOL on the upside, my copter investments have pretty much paid for themselves ;-)

    Hello Bo! You are forgetting that the Parrot Bebop 1 and 2 also have GPS, sonar, optical flow sensor, much better stabilized "1080" video, lot more flight time and similar price, size, but what make the Bebops much better is the modular design and easy access to all components for diy repairs and with all the parts available , upgrades and mods, make it a better "bang for your buck", without going to the larger gimbaled machines. just my thoughts.. anyway... great unboxing! :) You should review the new Bebop! Parrot ecoute moi!! :)

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому +2

      YES you are right. and I should have brought that up how the Bebop already do 1080p video and a lot better than the DOBBY. The Bebop have always been one of my favorite concepts, strangely I have never gotten my hands on one, may be time to look at the latest version of the Bebop.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому +1

      I should have compared to the Bebop, which do a better job at the digital stabilization. unfortunately I never got my hands on one. seems I should go make friends at the CES booth in january. :-)

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim 8 років тому

      I only know the Bebop2 what do you mean with 3?

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim 8 років тому +2

      the Bebop is a bit bigger, but if you take of the props (wich is fast and easy) it's more than ok for the backpack. it works quite well, the app evolved (it wasnt that good in the beginning) and now they even made a version2 in the beginning of 2016? didnt see much improvement here (larger battery, better cam?) but I still have the old one and I wanna change their stupid batteries so I can use standard 3cell 1500 or 1800mah on it. the stock batteries charge long, are inconsistent in their flying times...
      well, quality of course is a bit behind current possibilities.
      Another really interesting smaller but phantom like one would be the Mi Drone from Xiaomi - still waiting for the 4k model to hit the market.
      greetings,
      RCSchim

  • @BuckeyeStormsProductions
    @BuckeyeStormsProductions 8 років тому

    I agree with your assessment about, "drones," going this direction. Zerotech is on the edge of something big here. Parrot could also be there if they scale down the Bebop a bit. Pocket-sized camera equipped quads are bound to happen. When the really cool aerial selfies start popping up on social media more and more, people are going to want in on the action. As consumer friendly as the DJI Phantom is, I still feel it is too intimidating, and large, for many. Something this size, and easy to use, will start being adopted more and more. At that point, it is like a dam washing away. Market momentum will put more and more, "drones" in people's hands, literally. Eventually, even the most anti-drone lawmakers will have to concede to the market, and the technology will become nearly as commonplace as cellphones.

      Feature set - Breeze
      Video quality - Breeze
      Flight time - Breeze

      ;-) yeah its pretty slow charging. though charging batteries from battery banks is never a great proposition. I think the most interesting thing is that is possible.
      they want 60 for the batteries, but the breeze batteries are less so Im guessing these will hit 30+ in the future, then I would get a handful for a trip and charge at night.

    I believe cost is going to make this DOA. Hardcore enthusiasts will pass and the "Selfie Set" will balk at the price. I see this as a teen market product with too much expensive tech on board to turn a profit at the marketable price of $99.00 at the local Best Buy. Unfortunately most bleeding edge products fail, but set the stage for those that follow to refine and successfully monetize the category.

    • @bophoto
      @bophoto  8 років тому +1

      Yup, tend to agree with you.. its frustrating for people who actually know how to fly as we like more control. yet I think a number of early adopters will jump on this for selfies.
