I not only grew up in this era, but flew on the VC10 many times - indeed, my father was a Senior captain with BOAC and the VC10 was his command for the last seven years of his service with BOAC.
What was it like ... ? In all honesty, it was wonderful. The only other type BOAC operated then was the 707, and after a flight on the VC10, no-one wanted to fly the 707. The VC10 was not only far quieter, it was more comfortable and seemed far more modern. If BOAC had two trans-Atlantic flights scheduled within a couple of hours of each other, passengers would often delay their departures to switch to the later VC10 flight, if there were empty seats.
Flying in those days - especially internationally - was a far more exclusive (in the best sense of that word) experience then it is now. Yes, we got dressed up to fly - everyone did, back then - and perhaps this served to reinforce the idea that you were doing something special.
But I saw parts of the world in the 1960s that most people only saw on TV or in films, and my sense of wonder was intense and never-ending.
    It was a special time.

Jade Lim My late father was a senor first officer on the BOAC VC10 during the same era as yours - they probably knew each other! You're right, passengers specifically booked tickets to fly on the VC10.

+Steven Watt Oh - I know! I remember one time we were flying from LHR to JFK in early 1965, when there were two departures, about an hour apart.
The first was a 707, and an hour later was a VC10 flight. When Dad told us we were going on the earlier 707 departure, we were all disappointed.
But as he explained, so many passengers had decided to delay their departure in order to fly on the VC10, that the aircraft was full; if we settled for the 707, we'd not only get a seat (we were SUBLO passengers, and travelling Space A), we'd be in First Class.
So, we took the earlier 707 flight, and then stayed a night in New York. The next day, we were passengers on the first commercial Super VC10 service from JFK to SFO, and I was rewarded with a trip to the flight deck - for a nine-year old child, it was thrilling.
I also received a 'First Flight' certificate, signed by Harry Nicholls, the Captain and a friend of my father, which still hangs on my wall at home.
BOAC liked their 707s well enough, I guess, but they came to love the VC10.

I was so proud to have actually made it into the RAF and qualified as an aircraft engineer. I had pictures of the VC10 all over my bedroom walls as a child and I got to work on them for 10 years. WHY they dont build airliners to this design now is beyond me! Todays aircraft the people behind the wings get the roar from the engines for HOURS! The mighty Queen of The Skies had CLEAN wings (no engine pods) which gave the best performance. Short field take offs were easy and high altitude runway take offs no problem due to those superb Conways They never lost ONE VC-10 (only one blown up by hijackers) safest aircraft there ever was! Such a dream to fly in. GREATLY MISSED😭

In early June 1967 my family managed to get out of Aman, Jordan just a couple of days before the outbreak of the Six Day War that broke out in the Middle East. We left early in the morning from Aman to London on a BOAC Vickers VC - 10. After we landed in London the flight attendant told my Mom that the Captain requested our presence in the cockpit. My Mom took my 5 year old self and my three year old sister bro the front of the plane and the Captain shook her hand and then let me and my sister look inside the cockpit for a couple of minutes. It was quite an amazing experience for a young boy. We left London a few days later bound for New York via TWA on the magnificent 707. Ahh the memories.🙂

I flew from Heathrow on a VC-10 to NYC. As an avid aviation fan at the time, I intentionally worked my flight schedule to fly on as many different aircraft as possible including Lockheed Electra, Douglas DC6, DC7 and DC8, Boeing 707 and 720, Vickers Viscount, Vanguard, DeHavilland Comet, Boeing 727 and 737, Hawker-Siddley Trident, Convair 880 and 990, SUD Caravelle and BAC 111.
I always thought the VC10 was the queen of the skies in those days but it was a true example of government meddling in business decisions and poor or grossly deferred decisions killed the marketing and Vickers, DeHavilland and Bristol. A sad story for a great airplane.

Really a nice aircraft however like the Trident it suffered from that British Aviation illness, Myopia. Only 54 were built because it was built for hot and high African airports, even shorter runways on the continent. The speed is cool, but the bump in speed never was a big seller. The downside is the fuel cost and terrific noise. Not only the design limited its use but that crazy multi departmental government monster that told the builders what they could build and the U.K. Airlines what they could buy.

You mention the terrific noise but don't say if you meant inside or outside the VC10. I had the pleasure of many flights in this very comfortable & quiet aircraft so I can only presume you mean the outside noise from its engines. Having flown in many passenger & non passenger Aircraft, including the Boeing 707 at the age of 7, right up to the Boeing 747-800, along with fast jets from a number of Armed Forces I think that qualify me in the bracket of knowing what I'm talking about. Americans were jealous of the Super VC10 in the same way they were jealous of Concorde. After flying Lockheed Constellations on the Lagos to London route from 1958, alone and aged 7, and also possibly the Bristol Britannia, the Vickers VC10 took over for the round trip 3 times a year, in the days of the BOAC Junior Jet Club. These journeys began in the days of Nissan huts as terminals at London well before the spanking new building featured in this video. Being taken into the Captain's cabin and seeing him walk casually around the aircraft was standard. Exhilarating especially as an impressionable small boy, and always well looked after by BOAC staff. I am wondering if some legs of the journey were not also made in the Comet? Possibly Triploi / Nice / Barcelona to London?

Commenting on what was stated in Part 2 of Jet! When Britain Ruled the Skies. The stewardesses commented that people preferred this aircraft over Boeing's 707, saying that the noise of landing in the latter aircraft was like a controlled crash. Then they commented at the hideous uniform they had to ware...

As a child flying to and from Hong Kong to London my Dad specifically asked for the VC10 and most of my BOAC Junior Jet Club logs were in those planes. Yet another brilliant British product that was let down by the British Government(s) and the corruption of BOAC wanting to use Boeings

7’00”: “There are signs that in the sphere of air travel, matters are often multiracial as well as international.” Hmm, with its initial destination of apartheid Johannesburg? And “probably full of wonder, the inhabitants [of Lusaka] see the aircraft prepare for another stage of its journey” (6’05”); “[Y]et not many years ago, this place [Nairobi] was a wilderness . . . “ (7’30”). Interesting though.

I flew transatlantic on a VC10. Comfortable and much faster than any other transatlantic flight: 10% less fuel efficient but saved an hour NY-HTR (fuel became an issue from 1973). It was so popular that Boeing paid actors to spread rumours about it's safety record in US airport lounges despite its perfect flight safety record

Not hard to see why the VC10 was superior to the Boeing 707. Too bad it came on stream late in the game. By then, most airlines were fully committed to either the 707 or DC-8.

Excluding Concorde, and the Comet, British airlines aircraft were at least two years behind American designs.
When they produced a good design they could not build it quick enough.
TWA wanted to buy 40 Britannia aircraft, but would have to wait two years to get the first half a dozen.
    So said no.
