- Episode 2 from the TV series of Sherlock Holmes adaptations produced by British television company Granada Television, between 1984 and 1994, starring Jeremy Brett in the main role, and David Burke as Doctor Watson.

Jeremy Brett gave his portrayal of Holmes something no one else did before or has since - a quickness of movement, a sharpness of speech, a single-minded focus on the question; he was beyond brilliant in the role - he WAS Sherlock Holmes.
Perfectly stated!!
All that, and flawed. A truly 3d character portrayal. In comparison, Basil Rathbone was more like James Bond.
100 % !!!

Jeremy was and is still thrilling, the mannerisms, unique flourishes, mysterious pauses, sudden revelations, dramatic explanations..ahhh. So alive.
My dad and I watched these front to back in the 80s on PBS. Watching these today brings me a smile as I think of him . Love you Dad, till I hug you again.
Aw, I watched these with my parents, too, in the 90s and early 2000s. They recorded them all when they were on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. Brings back such fond memories to me, too, as both my wonderful parents are now dead as well.
@@lucyvandervort6191 I still have my mom but she doesn't give a hoot about this stuff lol. Good memories for sure, I still read Sherlock Holmes as well, always makes me feel close to my Dad. Take care.
My father died 5 years ago this coming week. I miss him so much.
Elsie a name someone called me years ago hahaha enjoy your day I'll return again soon
You and your father are part of God's chosen ones.
Jeremy Brett is My Favourite Sherlock Holmes ❤
Sure indeed no one can compete him, my favorite too
Perfect Holmes for me.
Same. I wish he made more💖💖
Perfect classical holmes.
I like the reboot with Benedict.
All sherlocks in the last century were/are awesome actors.
Script, Jeremy Brett acting, production value, everything about this is spectacular, a true masterpiece
Script by Arthur C. Doyle. From what I can tell, the dialogue is very close if not identical to the original ACD stories. I agree with the others here that Jeremy Brent and David Burke are perfect in their portrayal of the two.
Not only did Jeremy Brett give a very special portrayal of Holmes, but the entire episode was very special. Every actor gave a splendid performance.
Takes me back to the old PBS days, when we would flock to the giant tv to watch mystery , nature and Nova to name a few, the good ole days 😊👍👍🐈⬛

When we weren’t CONSUMED by digital anything or swallowed by it whole. Those were the days. Remember beautiful Alistair Cooke, oh I miss him.
Others played Sherlock Holmes. Jeremy Brett became Sherlock Holmes. He fought through serious illness to complete the work and died shortly after. RIP Mr Brett....we are all in your debt.
what illness?
@@KellieEverts--conductsNightTra rheumatic fever as a child which scarred his heart. bipolar for which he took lithium which caused water retention. His heart was twice the normal size when he died. Smoking 60 a day and drinking didn’t help. Also his mother’s tragic death!
@@nathelondon3719 thanks. I'm watching all his SH episodes now. He is great, 2nd only to Basil. I watched all of Basil's, none left. How did you know all this, books?
True I have seen many Holmes but none have portrayed the character so uncannily well! Jeremy Bret as Holmes and David Suchet as Poirot total favorites.
That’s terribly sad! But his brilliant portrayal of Sherlock Holmes gives him a sort of immortality.
"Sherlock Holmes is cheerful, so Sherlock Holmes must have a case."
"PAH!"
Is probably my favourite scene in cinematic history, no exaggerations
Just past it
When I saw this episode I chuckled when Abe Slaney came riding in looking like a cowboy with a big 10-gallon hat. I'm glad Granada did that for in the original Sydney Paget illustrations of the story that's exactly how Slaney looked - a Brit's version of an American criminal. Bravo Granada for those kind of authentic touches.
One of the worst most ridiculous depictions of American Texans was on Midsomer Murders. Every cartoon stereotype included & the WORST Texas drawl I've EVER heard. It was comical because it wasnt supposed to be! Quite a few British actors & actresses have a hard time with American accents. I must admit it's amusing to watch. 😊
@@kathyflorcruz552 and the kicker is Slaney is supposed to be part of the Chicago mob. XD
The thought that Jeremy Brett is no more makes me sad💔😔
He reminded me of a dancer, skilfully using his whole body to portray the character. Love him. 🇦🇺🇦🇺💕💕
I love the humor in the first scene with Holmes and Watson. The securities deduction, Holmes’ glee at having the case, Watson having the last laugh with the hat. It’s a great bit of character-based humor.

Jeremy Brett is to Sherlock Holmes is like David Suchet was to Poirot.
Not the only actor to play their character but a definitive performance
These two men portray Holmes and Watson perfectly. Their relationship is perfect
for me. Holmes is brilliant but quirky, his use of opiates and cocaine is no big deal. Watson is mature and an excellent partner for Holmes. He is not a dumbo clown such as earlier portrayals nor a ninja smart ass as more recent portrayals. No other portrayals of either comes close to their cinematic adventures of the deeds of Sherlock Holmes faithfully recounted by Dr. Watson, his friend and colleague. I’m so grateful to be able to watch these for free. The people acting the other parts are also great such as the local constable.
This series is soooo true to the books.
Best portrayal of Conan Doyle's works ever. I've seen every episode countless times and will never tire of them.
I thought Jude Law was a good Watson. He wasn't a bumbling moron. He was a competent partner who put his military and medical skills to great use
I know the actor that played Abe Slaney. Eugene Lipinski is his name. He's of Polish ancestry but was born in England. He has lived in Canada for many years though, and as far as I know, he is still here. I studied acting for a year about 10 years ago and he was my teacher for Improv, Movement, and Voice Training. Here he is much younger, than when I knew him. He's actually a very smart, interesting person, and quite personable.
the way watson jibs back at holmes with the timing of the knock, and then answers the door to allow holmes just enough time to put on his coat and greet them as if he'd been waiting-- brilliant!
Jeremy looks so young, so good. I miss him.
"How absurdly simple" - brilliant start-&-end bracketing! Brett and Burke shared a casual chemistry ranking very high among film and TV duos.
Peter Jeremy William Huggins, professionally known as Jeremy Brett (A name he got of the label inside of a suit) was a wonderful actor. He really was one of the best Holmes…. The world lost something , when he passed away . . .
Absolutely! The marriage of Brett with Granada's production is a godsend.
Great episode. I still remember the first time I read this story as a kid.
I was sleeping over at my grandma's house my parents when out town for the evening. And I brought the Holmes collected stories with me. It really captured my imagination. Lol.
I couldn't put it down and was so intrigued by the drawings. It was giving me shivers down my spine.
This was the first story that really hooked me on Holmes for life.
Good times! These Granada episodes with Brett and Burke/Hardwicke are truly the gold standard.
Basil Rathbone solved the code in Sherlock Holmes and The Secret Weapon. I think.
The Dancing Men was the first Sherlock Holmes short story I read, also. Great stuff for a 7th grader.
He truely was exceptional in his portrayal of Holmes, just how you imagined him from the books!
Jeremy Brett is the definitive Holmes!!!
R.I.P.. Mr. Brett
David Burke was the perfect as Dr Watson.
Absolutely! A man with a brain, unlike those '40s movies where he's no more useful than a side table!
Jeremy Brett played the perfect role of Sherlock Holmes! Just as David Suchet played the role of Hercule Poirot! Both near perfect, if there ever were.
And Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, as recommended by Christie herself.
Питер Устинов не менее идеален в роли Пуаро
Both Brett amd Suchet are truly iconic, using that cliché as it truly is meant.
Sherlock is always one step ahead of Watson, but because he cares for and values his friendship he always deals with him gently and lovingly. Note the little smile when Homes realizes that Watson was looking at his code book. And then again when Watson explains the code, he smiles like a proud parent whose child has learned a new skill.
Aaaaaah! I must have watched these episodes hundreds of time and I never realised that Watson was reading Holmes's book until your comment, thank you so much !
this is how good british television used to be
My dad gave me the entire Sherlock Holmes works of A.C.Doyle for my eighteenth birthday, and Sherlock has always been my detective of choice.
Indeed, following his example, (and episodes of Dragnet and Adam 12), I became a police detective and actually employed many of Doyle's' concepts in my very successful career.
Jeremy Brett is the personification of Mr Holmes and whoever put the sets together, (especially 221b Baker Street), was spot on!
Many thanks for posting these excellent works...
My very successful career if he says so himself!! You usually dont see that type of arrogance from civil servants
My very successful career if he says so himself. You usually don't see this type of arrogance from a civil servant.
God help us if you use Doyle’s techniques! It’s called fiction, and what Holmes does is a form of ‘abduction’, I.e reasoning to the ‘best explanation’, not rock-hard deduction.
He’s as good as they could make him... but doesn’t come close to Doyle’s characterisation or the reader’s imagination. No worthy representation has come of it but illustrations. Same goes for 221B Baker Street.
Please check out Dick Francis novels . I guarantee you’ll like them. Read them in order, from the first one and so on . . (You’ll thank me later)
😊👍.
Jeremy Brett set out to be the definitive Sherlock Holmes of his period.
He totally succeeded!
.
I certainly didn't expect to cry while watching this episode for the first time but, here I am, tears on my cheeks. This story was touching.
Jeremy Brett is the "parfait" Sherlock Holmes. He shows people an actor is an artist!
D'accord. I'l est un bon artist.

Beautiful production.
Wonderful costumes, gorgeous interiors and furniture.
Fantastic atmosphere...
And the acting. Don't forget the terrific acting!
Jeremy Brett is the best Holmes with no doubts 👌🏼
He's one of the best, but not THE best. There are others actors who have portrayed him adequately!
@@McIntyreBibleoh!shut up please!

@@richardcleveland8549 O yea, you think so? Brett is good, but he's not in a category all by himself!
@@McIntyreBible AS an actor portraying Holmes, Brett stood head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd. Given a choice, would you prefer an actor who portrayed a character "adequately" over one whose portrayal was brilliant? Not sure why you have an animus against the late Mr. Brett.

I saw these when they were first shown , by Diana Riggs, on PBS. Then , again, last year in chronological order. I just couldn’t get enough . I remember when they were on TV..I guess it was in the 1990s. I made sure I NEVER missed an episode. Many of them , especially when Holmes made his own, decisions for justice at the end, were so satisfying, I can’t tell you. .

This is one of best version of Sherlock Holmes . It's shame that isn't more popular.
I don't know how I came upon these episodes but I'm loving it! Thanks for posting.
Thank you for once again giving us Holmes and Watson, it's like savoring something delicious for the mind
Elsie's score is somewhat similar to the main melody of the 2nd Movement of Dvorak's 9th Symphony ("From The New World"). And it makes sense, since the Symphony is mainly about the New World (America) and his feelings of nostalgia (Dvorak was from Czech Republic, but he moved to the USA).
Very perceptive! Right up to the choice of instrumentation. And I, a professional musician, had not thought of it. Kudos to you 👏 👏, observant one!
What a sad story. Poor woman brought doom to the man she loved.
The first time I watched this with my late husband, I bawled like a child. Amazing how the adaptations can bring the audience in 🤨
Jeremy Brett was the one and only Shelock Holmes. im grateful to be able to watch him back in the 20th Century
30:15 I just love the facial acting here. Without a single word you can tell they're running a gamut of emotions; Investment, Realization, "Oh crap...", Coordination, Urgency
I've recently discovered these and somehow missed this story. This was just so brilliantly done.
Jeremy Brett and David Burke and also Edward Hardwicke are the best Holmes and Watson ever put to film. I have seen these many times and I still watch them. Jeremy Brett is perfect in this role.
0:49 An example of what I mean about authenticity in these productions . . . the very antique clippers she's using! All that for a shot not lasting more than a couple of seconds!
The classic detective 😀. No one can match Sherlock Holmes popularity and influence. Every detective created has drawn inspiration from him.😁
hands down the best ever Sherlock Holmes - unsurpassed
Watching this years after you uploaded it, and remembering how terrified I was watching it as a child when it first aired on US PBS; I instinctively knew those dancing men foreshadowed tragedy! Thanks so much for posting this!
Jeremy Brett was the definitive Sherlock Holmes and Devid Burke was the perfect Watson.
This was beautifully written
Brett was, is and forever will be Sherlock Holmes ❤🎩🎻⚖️💉🩸⚰️
jeremy brett and basil rathbone the two great cherlock holmes ever ! all the actors and the setting in the two series are wonderful , they are great in their own right. i enjoyd both series a lot !!!

I've read (more than once) every single Sherlock Holmes story amd these are the only movie or television adaptations that do justice to the brilliant books.
Wonderful rendition of a classic Doyle Holmes tale.
The Best Sherlock Holmes ever….. Jeremy Brett
This may very well be the best one of these adaptations. The script is superb. The production is detailed and lavish. Most of all, Brett is absolutely excellent in the grand manner.
10:15 "EXPLAIN!! Mr Cubit. And COME TO THE POINT!" - lol I just love how Jeremy Brett played Holmes - someone of such high intelligence as Holmes has very little tolerance for babbling, so he played him brilliantly
David Burke was my favorite Dr Watson 😁😁😁😁😁
Poor Mr Hilton Cubitt
J. Brett the BEST on screen Sherlock Holmes!!
That sneering lip. Jeremy Brett. Perfection.
Ever since i was little ive been watching anything Sherlock Holmes. It helps with my anxiety. Im 49 still watching.😂
Everyone has their favorite pairs for Sherlock and Watson, regardless these two did an excellent job.
Absolutely the two perfect Holmes and Watson: Jeremy Brett and David Burke.
Ah, I will always see Jeremy Brett whenever I read Sherlock Holmes stories. Brett lived Sherlock in every word, look, and move. Fabulous. But I feel the same about David Burke as Watson. Given how Doyle describes Watson's relationship with Holmes, it would be easy to play Watson as a fool or a sycophant. Burke gives Watson his dignity, his courage, and his value to Sherlock. Thus, Burke will forever be Watson in my mind.
My dear childhood my favourite episode of Sherlock Holmes finally back again thank you bro. And thank you Jeremy Brett for playing Sherlock you will always be my childhood that I will never forget
Thank You for showing this series. All the supporting cast are so talented. And of course Sherlock and Watson are beyond words✨
Brett is an excellent Holmes, I'm partial to Rathbone but Brett puts his own stamp on the role which is unique, playing Holmes is scrutinized by all who see, a difficult role to make believable, yet he pulls off a great rendition.
Absolutely great!! The modern Holmes “want-a-bes”: Cumberbatch and Downe; could never do anything this real, this subtle!! Jeremy Brett lived to be Sherlock Holmes and he was successful to the max! I learn something new every time I watch it. I’ve watched all 42 several times. They are like Poirot or Miss Marple to me. Just imagine: one man using his solitary hand is brain, curiosity, common sense and imagination to solve these problems. Thanks for these.
I actually quite like Downe, he conveys the tortured soul quite well.
A great story and fantastic acting.
I think Brett is the best Holmes, and I *know* this is the best Watson, hands down!
I hugely respect Edward Hardwicke's Watson; Burke has sparkling charm, plus splendid chemistry with Brett, that transcend all others in my estimation.
From a french perspective mr jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes
Le meilleur de tous, sans le moindre doute possible ❤😊❤
Wow, super-high quality upload! Thanks!
“The dancing men” is one of my favorites and Hound of the Baskervilles, I picture Kelsey Grammar (frasier crane) watching these too!
This story taught me a lot about cracking a code.
I never liked Sherlock Holmes very much until I got a chance to watch this series on PBS years ago. Mr. Brett will always be Holmes to me.
Love Sherlock. Unfortunate about the bus in the background of the last few frames.
Well,aren't YOU the detective.😸
Wow! How did you see that?
I don’t see anything at the end, you mean the very very last frames of the video? A bus in the background somewhere?
Yes! The bus appears in the far left background at 52:55. But I never would have noticed it.
Oh my god, you have keen eyes. I never noticed.
A Fine episode. The sets are splendid.
Jeremy is the real Sherlock 👍
Jeremy Brett - No1 Sherlock Holmes
Thank you very much for thid upload. I appreciate it very much!🎉
I especially love when he jumps over the couch!
I actually saw this in my English class
When these adaptations by Granada Television first aired between 1984 and 1994, I watched every episode. The world came to a stop for me as I enjoyed Jeremy Brett's authoritative interpretation of the great consulting detective. In essence, he became Sherlock Holmes. Both David Burke and Edward Hardwicke embodied Dr. John H. Watson, portraying him as competent, fearless, intelligent and reliable. This is unlike the buffoonish portrayal by Nigel Bruce in the 1930s and 40s. Charles Gray was excellent in the part of Mycroft Holmes. Rosalie Williams was the definitive Mrs. Hudson. All in all, these are classic performances by exceptional actors. It is a pleasure to watch these episodes once again. I will buy the complete series on Amazon before too long.
40 years old today.
Brett’s 1st wearing the Cap.
JB is the quintessential Holmes. The first time I read SH as a teenager I pictured Holmes exactly this way.
I would have loved to have watched Mr Brett on stage🌹❤️
Thanks. I love Jeremy.
Jeremy is the Best
These remain so good, so insanely good.
One of the best of the series. Holmes does actual detective work. There's a couple (The Solitary Cyclist for example) that just have him along for the ride as it unfolds. Here, his work is moving the story forward, including ensnaring the murderer.
Definitely! Jeremy Brett is the best in Sherlock Holmes!!!
The best words to describe him as quintessential/ definitive Holmes. As I mentioned earlier, as David Suchet was the absolute Poirot so was Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes. Both men took a serious approach and methodically and thoroughly studied the characters, the stories, and even researched the minutest details the nuances of character and habits of their most famous detectives they played. It is wonderful to see them young, well, younger both Watson and Sherlock.
I like this version because it is close to the book, without silly inventions of producers and screenwriters.
I like the hand cannon Holmes holds on Abe Slaney.
What is the name of the gun that he used here?
It's a Colt single action army.
Though a tragic story, I must say the mansion estate in this one was I think the most beautiful I've seen in all of this series.
"How ABZURSDLY simple".
Thanks for sharing 😊
Love "old-fashioned" Holmes series, get a wine glass and a warm cozy dim room. Enjoy 😉
Wonderful!!!😍🤩😍🤩
I just finished the audiobook narrated by Greg Wagland. Then watched this. Both excellent.
