Peter Cushing was offered and turned down the role because of the low salary. Christopher Lee also turned it down not for the money but because he thought the film wasn't going to be very good. However, after it's release he did say not accepting Loomis was one of the worst mistakes of his career. But can't imagine anyone but Donald Pleasence as Loomis.

This is what makes Michael Myers so scary. Many serial killers at least make an attempt to wear some visage of humanity (trying to blend into normal society, feigning remorse, pretending to show concern for others, making a false show of understanding the gravity of their actions) in order to camouflage their inner nature. Michael does none of these things. There is no "human" face to him. There is no "reason" why he kills. He just does - it's what embodies him. You really start to understand what Carpenter means when he says that Michael is almost like a force, rather than a person.
Agreed. He looks human, but doesn't act human. That's straight into the uncanny valley right there. Loomis senses this. Plus the mask erases his face, completely removing any identity, reducing him to the most basic human shape. Michael may be technically a human, but he's not human, if you know what I mean. That's very creepy if you think about it.
To be perfectly honest, the way you described serial killers pretending to be normal and hiding among innocent people, kinda sounds scarier than Michael. But otherwise, I agree that the best and scariest thing about Michael is exactly what you described. Not exactly scarier, but rather a different kind of scary.
@@tsrav5 but in reality he did just kind of blend into the crowd in the first movie. He walked right into the hardware store and shoplifted, he walked around town, he drove around, all in broad daylight and no one really noticed him, so he blended in pretty well.

Part of me always wanted Michael to kill Sheriff Brackett. The guy was an asshole who did nothing but accuse Loomis of letting Michael out. Michael escaped. He wasn't let out. Loomis was about to take him to court to be put on trial for killing Judith but Michael let all of the other patients out as a distraction then probably escaped in the confusion while the doctors and guards were rounding the others up, forced Marion Chambers out of the car then got in and drove away. Either that or Loomis should have shot Brackett while shouting "I'LL SHOOT YOU 6 TIMES. I'LL SHOOT YOU IN THE HEART."

For those who are confused. This is one of the three scenes that were added to the film for the television version; Filmed in 1981 with Halloween II. The scenes include this one, a scene after Michael's escape, and a scene with Laurie at her home when she's visited by Lynda who wanted to barrow a blouse, and Annie calls on the phone. These scenes were added to make up for the 11 minutes worth of film they had to cut out for the film to be shown on television.
PurpleRain500 it was actually additional footage shot to make the film longer for advertisers for its “network debut”. The film was suggestive in violence in its original cut. The only scene edited for was the nude with PJ Soles but that was left in as well just the shot didn’t pan down for all of her cleavage to show.

The tv version of Halloween (from 1978) was filmed in the spring of 1980 during the pre production of Halloween II. Therefore, the filming for Halloween II did not begin until the spring of 1981... In actuality, by this account; the brother and sister reference was first revealed in the tv version of the original Halloween... What Loomis knew, Laurie finally understands. Michael isn't human anymore, even if his body is. He's becoming something beyond their ability to contain or kill. And if he truly transcends with every kill, Halloween Ends is going to be a bloodbath.

This scene alone conveys the essence of eeriness that was involved with Michael. It is so well written and shot. No music. Just a blank face, blank walls, and dead eyes. For over 40 years ago, this scene tops any horror movie
And the scene of those three in the auditorium where only Loomis is there. It conveys the sense that this was all routine, nothing-to-see-here business that goes on in any psych ward when he's telling them how dangerous Myers is and pleading with them to lock him up forever.
1:27 It always gives me goosebumps. Donald Pleasence was such a fantastic actor. Great voice. His legacy should not just be confined to his work in the Halloween franchise but it should also be noted that the series hasn't been the same without him.
The Director was Brilliant, his ability to bring out such great performance from all of the Actors involved in this powerful chilling scene. Adding incredible depth of darkness to the Michael Myers character. 🙄
That child actor played Michael to the T. Soulless gaze, stoic posture, slight still twitch, emotionless, and motionless. If he had gotten up slowly and just stood still it would of been creepy as hell.
This is the one scene that should be edited into the theatrical cut. It's that good and really provides the perfect bridge between the opening sequence and the escape. Sets it up beautifully.
I agree. I'm not knockout the original theatrical cut. It's my favorite horror movie ever. But this scene shows just how desperate Loomis is to keep Myers locked up.
The interesting thing is seeing the doctors overestimate themselves, except Loomis. He realizes how extremely cunning Michael is. Michael himself is quite intelligent here, by not visibly responding to anything outside of basic survival biological function, it disarms the unaware around him. He knows that at the size he is in the clip, even with inadequate security he still can't overpower his way out. So he waits for his captors to make a mistake and in the meantime he grows bigger and stronger. The only one unto his game is Loomis and even then he probably doesn't know the depth of his planning but he's aware enough to know that anything he's planning isn't good.
"There's an instinctive force within him....He's waiting". 🥶 The way Loomis walks into Michael's room and keeps himself at a great distance . To me, this scene is the calm before the storm. Masterfully done by Carpenter.
It's just that he didn't have a lot in the way of scientific evidence. He's talking about a feeling. The viewer knows Michael is evil, but put yourself in the place of professional psychiatrists, dealing with a child. It takes a lot for them to say "lock him away in the worst facility you can find and throw away the key". He hasn't acted out, or shown aggressive behavior while in the hospital, for all they can see he's a catatonic small child. Legally and medically speaking, there is no strong reason to do what Loomis is suggesting. There's a tendency to believe children are reformable.
Donald Pleasence has and will always be Dr. Loomis. When I watched the new Halloween movie, it didn't feel right without him. I love the awkward silence between Michael and Loomis during this scene.
Halloween was Academy Award material, and Donald Pleasence definitely should have been nominated for an Oscar. He's brilliant in this scene: trying everything to convince the board what he knows will happen and eventually does: Michael will kill again.

If made "Season of the Witch" Halloween 2--instead of 3--and then (maybe) brought back Myers just once more in Halloween 4 or 5, then the series would've become an American icon! I think living in the universes of any of the horror series would be scary as shit. If you lived in the Nightmare On Elm Street universe you've got a dream demon tormenting and killing people in their nightmares. In the Halloween world you've got evil itself in the form of a man killing the people of a small town, If you live in the Texas of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre universe you run the risk of coming across a family of cannibalistic serial killers who use your body parts for food, masks, furniture,decorations and so on.
You go to places like Baltimore, Detroit, Camden, Philadelphia, Chester, Wilmington (DE), and there are literally thousands of soulless demons who will take your life in a nano second without hesitation.

The scene with Michael sitting in the chair in front of the window, speechless and barely moving is so chilling, also the same scene when Laurie Strode has the dream of seeing him sitting there, and he slowly turns around to look at her.
I’m struggling to understand what drives a human being to end up like that. Fear, want of revenge, and internalising all of this…I’m not a professional, and it’s beyond my understanding.
The way I see it is if there's humans out there who lose everything or gain nothing and they say they've been living like a zombie night creature ever since for years since part of their life and soul disappears and they feel nothing, no joy etc. So if that's possible then leading down this path of total evil is almost entirely possible too, it all depends entirely on the inner nature of the person which is more likely to prune a trait and lean towards one trait over another when being succumbed to events in life. Part of it is to do with intelligence more than emotional intelligence, scary knowing evil is more likely to be seen as more smarter than good because you are less likely to be exploited by others. People seen Leatherface as this mute and retard, he didn't have a voice and was only exposed to bad events in life hence why he went down the route he did because he was taught to be that person
@@nathanwilliams2152there’s material outside of the movie (‘78 novelization of the screenplay) that references an actual supernatural force that overcame Michael as a child. I hate to add mystique but Samhain plays a big role in first 6 movies though I’m not a fan of the Thorn retcon. Even 3 which doesn’t even have Myers in it references Samhain since the focus is on the holiday.
Problem with that is it was filmed a few years after the original cut of the film was released in theaters for the tv version so it would've been impossible to have it in the theatrical release to begin with but they could've left those scenes in for all future home video releases after the tv version aired but sadly they didn't.
This is really one of those scenes where clearly the audience knows more than the characters except for Dr. Loomis. See it from the other psychiatrist’s point of view. Michael, despite brutally murdering his sister a year prior to this scene, had never shown any aggression or outburst or any attempt on anyone else’s life at the sanitarium. However, the fact that Michael showed no remorse, no regard, and “not even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, right or wrong, good or evil” should have been a red flag for those doctors. So I understand why they made the decision they did. It was a terribly wrong decision with terrible consequences, but I understand why.
I want to understand why then again that would scare me even more than some random dude throwing poop at the walls. This 6 year old, brutally murdered his sister then basically never said another word or felt another feeling. Almost like nothing could ever feel as good as the feeling he felt when he killed. Lock his ass up and throw away the key!

The relationship between Michael and Dr. Loomis is incredible. One of my favorite adversarial relationships in fiction. Only Dr.Loomis knows EXACTLY what Michael is not only capable of , but how truly evil he is, and Michael knows it to. If I was in this reality I would protect Dr. Loomis at all costs only he truly had the Keys to dealing with Michael. He was the only one that Michael allowed to talk to him.
Halloween is my favorite horrormovie ever and it's one of the scariest i know also and Michael Myers is simply evil . I loved Donald Pleasence performance as Dr Sam Loomis and he did a memorable and an amazing role and he made the Halloweenmovies great :) . I miss him so much and he is one of my favorite actors ever ! .

choptop It's Simple Dr. Loomis cannot get inside Michael's head, and trigger any type of emotional or physical response from him to prove to the other Doctors that he was remorseful, regretful, happy, sad, or even aware of what he's done.

Given that Dr. Loomis understands that Michael Myers killed his sister for no reason leads him to believe that he doesn't understand what he's doing, and that he will not do good things, only evil things.
The concept they are going to use for Halloween kills is an interesting one. Every time Michael kills, he transcends into something more evil. And it all started here. Dr. Loomis senses it but he can't put it into words yet

This extra footage should of been definitely added in to complete the foundation of the story to Halloween 1978 Dr. Loomis made the diologe of this movie a million times better with his outstanding performance...
They're interesting to see but they don't add much to the movie. After all, they were primarily filmed as padding for the TV broadcast in order to fill up a 2 hour time slot. So in a sense, they don't exist because these flashback scenes are necessary to the plot but because the movie needed to fit neatly into a time slot.
Beautifully acted and written well, the extended pause to let it sink in was perfect. It really expands that Michael really is just waiting. That there is no boredom for him, he just is waiting. That Michael dedicated himself to killing, and he is willing to have this act happen for decades to get the chance again. It makes the comment he remarks about trying to never let Michael out all the more powerful. "But not me " Michael is indifferent, he couldn't care less. Because he knows one day he'll escape.

He is waiting...and Loomis doesn't know what he's waiting FOR...which makes this moment all the more terrifying. Like you said, this scene is BRILLIANT.
I find one of the scariest yet more realistic things about the series is how Michael was able to fool the institutions that held him captive. Yes, it is true that Michael brutally killed his sister on Halloween night for seemingly no reason, an extreme and unprecedented action calling for his immediate institutionalization.. but then he displayed a behavior of total and complete catatonia for YEARS after this. People don't realize how little a catatonic person can really do, they are basically in a psychologically induced coma. They don't eat, they don't drink, they don't talk, they don't go to the bathroom, they don't even stare at one particular thing or another. They often have to be force fed or put on an IV drip because they lack the basic functionality to feed themselves, and bed pans and nursing staff often have to be used for other bodily functions just like extremely frail and elderly people in senior homes or severely injured people in hospitals. Imagine being a doctor or a nurse tasked with feeding Michael by hand and cleaning his dirty sheets every day for literal years, seeing him grow from a boy to a young man, completely motionless and unaffected by all stimulus, and Dr. Loomis is absolutely adamant that this boy is the single most dangerous person he's ever faced in his entire career simply because he has "the devil's eyes." Logically speaking, what Dr. Loomis is saying makes no sense. Michael hasn't said a word or done a thing since the inciting incident with his sister, he has to be cared for like a coma patient for god sake, he doesn't even move on his own volition or use his own muscles to do basic things like picking up a glass or taking a pill. By all accounts, no matter what Michael did to warrant his being institutionalized, Michael has not exhibited any behavior or sign whatsoever of even basic cognition let alone clear and present danger like Loomis claims. Moving him from a high-security facility to a less secure one specialized in patient care and rehabilitation is only logical, which makes what happens next all the more horrifying. Seeing Michael do so much as voluntarily lift a finger or shift his eyes would be shocking enough to warrant closer examination, so imagine how terrified and shocked the transfer bus driver must have been when Michael suddenly sprung up into action and started beating on him with all the strength of a silverback gorilla. What Loomis couldn't get anyone to understand was the fact that Michael was no patient. Michael was not human.
They were ingnorant and they hadn’t done the work properly unlike dr loomis who had been with Michael every day and month who began to understand what he had seen and how dangerous Michael was to everyone around him
This is just like movie studios who tell a director he can make the movie he wants, then they demand all kind of changes against his will, then when the movie that they approved of bombs, they blame the director and look for someone else to take over the next sequel.
It's writing and scenes like this by Carpenter and Hill that separates Halloween from all other horror and slasher movies. We still watch this and are completely fascinated by Michael and his psyche.
Micheal almost loves the cat and mouse with Loomis. They're relationship is more fascinating to me because he never really wants to kill Loomis. He just knocks him out of the way. In h5 when he almost gives the knife to Loomis u see the excitement in Loomis that maybe he's changed him but yet he falls back to his own darkness. Donald pleasance is one of the finest actors who always have an A performance
Even though it's kinda better than in the sequels, it still bothers me that nobody would take Loomis warnings and claims about Myers danger seriously when he clearly seems to know the guy better than anyone else. Especially after spending entire hours alone with him. Thankfully in the last film they FINALLY seemed to realize how dangerous the mute asshole is a throw him into a maximum security shit.

He didn't act like he was above a small horror production and gave it his best effort, and because of that the character not only helps to elevate the movie itself and the genre; but he made it possible for other great actors to do the same. Look at how many really well acted horror films we've had since then. That's not to say that earlier actors didn't take their roles seriously. It's just that doing a high profile Hitchcock movie didn't get the same respect as doing a genre movie and many big stars and well-known actors used to stay away from the smaller productions. I really think DP helped to change that
I was so shocked that this Oscar worthy scene was not in the movie until later on. First of all I love that Loomis is the smartest doctor to see that Michael was a con artist who used slience as a way to get away with killing his sister. I love how legendary battle between Michael and Dr Loomis came about especially when you see l Michael face at the end or the scene when Loomis said but not me. Loomis knew that Michael was full of shit. It was that expression that shown that Michael anger and disappointment that prove that he is very cunning and Loomis knew that he should never get out.
This scene was really terrific because it explains where Michael was kept away for fifteen years. Not sure why it wasn't added in the original theatrical release. Hell even the dialogue is great which is rare for a horror movie.
my favorite scene out of the whooooole franchise is that moment and when Loomis says "he's waiting." and the doctor responding with just those simple words "....for what?" For me that was the scene that foreshadowed the movie and the sequels that followed, each one all going back to the night of 1978 and opening all the different kinds of branches of story arcs, the Thorne trilogy timeline, the H20 timeline, and now the final timeline. Loomis couldn't tell but everyone knew that it all had to do with his destiny
Donald Pleasance was brilliant as Loomis- everything he did or said built the suspense in the same way that John William’s score in Jaws did- by the time you finally see the monster, you’re already half out of your seat with dread- or under it. Loomis was scared, and Pleasance made you feel that fear, see it in his face and voice. HE was the true “special effect” here, far better than any CGI or gore could ever be at making Myers a force of evil to run screaming from
Say what you want about the extended edition it was good to get more Donald Pleasance screen time as Dr. Loomis. His demeanor is much more calmer and collected in the first movie earlier in his profession compared to how later in his slow transition to his obsessive and hysterical fear when he realized how dangerous Michael really was.
It's ironic, he was not deemed as a threat or security risk because of his catatonic state but that oversight is ultimately what enabled him to escape and become a notorious serial killer. Psychologically, it's brilliant. From a psychiatric standpoint, you would think his stoic behavior would raise some question and alarm.
I really want this scene included in the movie. What a missed opportunity, Donald Pleasance Dr Loomis was brilliant, and we got to see more of Michael as a kid, and the kid who played him was fantastic! He really did look like he had no life in him, while it seemed like something bad was eventually going to happen with him, and it sends chills.
michael's face changes each time we see a closeup. His mouth is usually open. People think of Myers just blank faced looking at a wall, but even when he is unmasked in the original movie we see Tony Moran with his mouth open with emotion on his face.
I think it would be a good idea to make a movie about all the time Michael was in the asylum with Loomis as his doctor so you could learn what he did in order to help his patient. I have always wanted to learn more about Michaels years in there
Chaos Comics did a 3-part series that explored Michael's time in the asylum - and why Loomis became so obsessed. It was fantastic! Would make a great movie or series.
I forget where I originally saw it, but there was once talk of a Michael Myers mini-series that did just that, focus on Michael's time spent inside Smith's Grove and the effect that he had on other patients and staff. I thought it would be great because I love the lore so much, but they would have to be careful because everything we know says that Michaels was nearly a model patient, so a lot of it might be "boring" since it wasn't like Michael was killing at the asylum or anything of that sort. But I still would watch it!
Backstory - Loomis is a phychiatrist who is innately aware of human emotions..He almost has a sixth sense of seeing people for who thry really are. It shows him.in court testifying on behalf of the state where a defemdant has fooled everyone including court ordered therapists that he has multiple personality disorder and is not aware of the murders he commits. Loomis after examining him and studying his background realizes he is a fake and fully aware and exposes him in court causing the.man to.explode in court showing his true colors. Plot Point 1 / Big Event - Loomis is hired by the police to help track a killer of children. The police are completwly baffled . . . Plot Point 2 - Loomis relaizes the killer of the children in actuallity is a police officer who was assigmed the case. Loomis confronts.him and a standoff fight ensues and loomis escapes with his life. ending - These.events then can wind right into Loomis.meeting a 5 year old.boy who he is told.murdered his sister and is very very disturbed child. Dr Loomis asked what is the boys name. He is told the boys name is Michael Myers..

Peter Cushing was offered and turned down the role because of the low salary. Christopher Lee also turned it down not for the money but because he thought the film wasn't going to be very good. However, after it's release he did say not accepting Loomis was one of the worst mistakes of his career. But can't imagine anyone but Donald Pleasence as Loomis.

This is what makes Michael Myers so scary. Many serial killers at least make an attempt to wear some visage of humanity (trying to blend into normal society, feigning remorse, pretending to show concern for others, making a false show of understanding the gravity of their actions) in order to camouflage their inner nature. Michael does none of these things. There is no "human" face to him. There is no "reason" why he kills. He just does - it's what embodies him. You really start to understand what Carpenter means when he says that Michael is almost like a force, rather than a person.
Agreed. He looks human, but doesn't act human. That's straight into the uncanny valley right there. Loomis senses this. Plus the mask erases his face, completely removing any identity, reducing him to the most basic human shape. Michael may be technically a human, but he's not human, if you know what I mean. That's very creepy if you think about it.
To be perfectly honest, the way you described serial killers pretending to be normal and hiding among innocent people, kinda sounds scarier than Michael. But otherwise, I agree that the best and scariest thing about Michael is exactly what you described. Not exactly scarier, but rather a different kind of scary.

Part of me always wanted Michael to kill Sheriff Brackett. The guy was an asshole who did nothing but accuse Loomis of letting Michael out. Michael escaped. He wasn't let out. Loomis was about to take him to court to be put on trial for killing Judith but Michael let all of the other patients out as a distraction then probably escaped in the confusion while the doctors and guards were rounding the others up, forced Marion Chambers out of the car then got in and drove away. Either that or Loomis should have shot Brackett while shouting "I'LL SHOOT YOU 6 TIMES. I'LL SHOOT YOU IN THE HEART."

For those who are confused. This is one of the three scenes that were added to the film for the television version; Filmed in 1981 with Halloween II. The scenes include this one, a scene after Michael's escape, and a scene with Laurie at her home when she's visited by Lynda who wanted to barrow a blouse, and Annie calls on the phone. These scenes were added to make up for the 11 minutes worth of film they had to cut out for the film to be shown on television.

The film was suggestive in violence in its original cut. The only scene edited for was the nude with PJ Soles but that was left in as well just the shot didn’t pan down for all of her cleavage to show.

The tv version of Halloween (from 1978) was filmed in the spring of 1980 during the pre production of Halloween II. Therefore, the filming for Halloween II did not begin until the spring of 1981... In actuality, by this account; the brother and sister reference was first revealed in the tv version of the original Halloween... In which the tv scenes were filmed and added to the 1st cut of the movie in spring of 1980; for it wasn't made in 1981!! And You are welcome to Fact check my findings... Thank you very much!
After watching Halloween Kills, the ending of this scene is even more significant.
What Loomis knew, Laurie finally understands. Michael isn't human anymore, even if his body is. He's becoming something beyond their ability to contain or kill. And if he truly transcends with every kill, Halloween Ends is going to be a bloodbath.

This scene alone conveys the essence of eeriness that was involved with Michael. It is so well written and shot. No music. Just a blank face, blank walls, and dead eyes. For over 40 years ago, this scene tops any horror movie
And the scene of those three in the auditorium where only Loomis is there. It conveys the sense that this was all routine, nothing-to-see-here business that goes on in any psych ward when he's telling them how dangerous Myers is and pleading with them to lock him up forever.

That child actor played Michael to the T. Soulless gaze, stoic posture, slight still twitch, emotionless, and motionless. If he had gotten up slowly and just stood still it would of been creepy as hell.

This is the one scene that should be edited into the theatrical cut. It's that good and really provides the perfect bridge between the opening sequence and the escape. Sets it up beautifully.

I'm not knockout the original theatrical cut. It's my favorite horror movie ever.
But this scene shows just how desperate Loomis is to keep Myers locked up.
The interesting thing is seeing the doctors overestimate themselves, except Loomis. He realizes how extremely cunning Michael is. Michael himself is quite intelligent here, by not visibly responding to anything outside of basic survival biological function, it disarms the unaware around him. He knows that at the size he is in the clip, even with inadequate security he still can't overpower his way out. So he waits for his captors to make a mistake and in the meantime he grows bigger and stronger. The only one unto his game is Loomis and even then he probably doesn't know the depth of his planning but he's aware enough to know that anything he's planning isn't good.

It's just that he didn't have a lot in the way of scientific evidence. He's talking about a feeling. The viewer knows Michael is evil, but put yourself in the place of professional psychiatrists, dealing with a child. It takes a lot for them to say "lock him away in the worst facility you can find and throw away the key". He hasn't acted out, or shown aggressive behavior while in the hospital, for all they can see he's a catatonic small child. Legally and medically speaking, there is no strong reason to do what Loomis is suggesting. There's a tendency to believe children are reformable.
Donald Pleasence has and will always be Dr. Loomis. When I watched the new Halloween movie, it didn't feel right without him. I love the awkward silence between Michael and Loomis during this scene.
Halloween was Academy Award material, and Donald Pleasence definitely should have been nominated for an Oscar. He's brilliant in this scene: trying everything to convince the board what he knows will happen and eventually does: Michael will kill again.

I think living in the universes of any of the horror series would be scary as shit. If you lived in the Nightmare On Elm Street universe you've got a dream demon tormenting and killing people in their nightmares. In the Halloween world you've got evil itself in the form of a man killing the people of a small town, If you live in the Texas of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre universe you run the risk of coming across a family of cannibalistic serial killers who use your body parts for food, masks, furniture,decorations and so on.
In the Friday the 13th universe, you'd run the risk of running into an undead killing machine that wears a hockey mask.

The scene with Michael sitting in the chair in front of the window, speechless and barely moving is so chilling, also the same scene when Laurie Strode has the dream of seeing him sitting there, and he slowly turns around to look at her.
I’m struggling to understand what drives a human being to end up like that. Fear, want of revenge, and internalising all of this…I’m not a professional, and it’s beyond my understanding.
The way I see it is if there's humans out there who lose everything or gain nothing and they say they've been living like a zombie night creature ever since for years since part of their life and soul disappears and they feel nothing, no joy etc. So if that's possible then leading down this path of total evil is almost entirely possible too, it all depends entirely on the inner nature of the person which is more likely to prune a trait and lean towards one trait over another when being succumbed to events in life. Part of it is to do with intelligence more than emotional intelligence, scary knowing evil is more likely to be seen as more smarter than good because you are less likely to be exploited by others. People seen Leatherface as this mute and retard, he didn't have a voice and was only exposed to bad events in life hence why he went down the route he did because he was taught to be that person

I hate to add mystique but Samhain plays a big role in first 6 movies though I’m not a fan of the Thorn retcon. Even 3 which doesn’t even have Myers in it references Samhain since the focus is on the holiday.
Its scary how even as a small child, Dr. Loomis saw how Dangerous Micheal was and what he was capable of once the time came.

Problem with that is it was filmed a few years after the original cut of the film was released in theaters for the tv version so it would've been impossible to have it in the theatrical release to begin with but they could've left those scenes in for all future home video releases after the tv version aired but sadly they didn't.
This is really one of those scenes where clearly the audience knows more than the characters except for Dr. Loomis. See it from the other psychiatrist’s point of view. Michael, despite brutally murdering his sister a year prior to this scene, had never shown any aggression or outburst or any attempt on anyone else’s life at the sanitarium. However, the fact that Michael showed no remorse, no regard, and “not even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, right or wrong, good or evil” should have been a red flag for those doctors. So I understand why they made the decision they did. It was a terribly wrong decision with terrible consequences, but I understand why.
I want to understand why then again that would scare me even more than some random dude throwing poop at the walls. This 6 year old, brutally murdered his sister then basically never said another word or felt another feeling. Almost like nothing could ever feel as good as the feeling he felt when he killed. Lock his ass up and throw away the key!

The relationship between Michael and Dr. Loomis is incredible. One of my favorite adversarial relationships in fiction. Only Dr.Loomis knows EXACTLY what Michael is not only capable of , but how truly evil he is, and Michael knows it to. If I was in this reality I would protect Dr. Loomis at all costs only he truly had the Keys to dealing with Michael. He was the only one that Michael allowed to talk to him.
Halloween is my favorite horrormovie ever and it's one of the scariest i know also and Michael Myers is simply evil . I loved Donald Pleasence performance as Dr Sam Loomis and he did a memorable and an amazing role and he made the Halloweenmovies great :) . This extra footage should of been definitely added in to complete the foundation of the story to Halloween 1978 Dr. Loomis made the diologe of this movie a million times better with his outstanding performance...
They're interesting to see but they don't add much to the movie. After all, they were primarily filmed as padding for the TV broadcast in order to fill up a 2 hour time slot. So in a sense, they don't exist because these flashback scenes are necessary to the plot but because the movie needed to fit neatly into a time slot.
Beautifully acted and written well, the extended pause to let it sink in was perfect. It really expands that Michael really is just waiting. That there is no boredom for him, he just is waiting. That Michael dedicated himself to killing, and he is willing to have this act happen for decades to get the chance again. It makes the comment he remarks about trying to never let Michael out all the more powerful.

I find one of the scariest yet more realistic things about the series is how Michael was able to fool the institutions that held him captive. Yes, it is true that Michael brutally killed his sister on Halloween night for seemingly no reason, an extreme and unprecedented action calling for his immediate institutionalization.. but then he displayed a behavior of total and complete catatonia for YEARS after this.
People don't realize how little a catatonic person can really do, they are basically in a psychologically induced coma. They don't eat, they don't drink, they don't talk, they don't go to the bathroom, they don't even stare at one particular thing or another. They often have to be force fed or put on an IV drip because they lack the basic functionality to feed themselves, and bed pans and nursing staff often have to be used for other bodily functions just like extremely frail and elderly people in senior homes or severely injured people in hospitals. Imagine being a doctor or a nurse tasked with feeding Michael by hand and cleaning his dirty sheets every day for literal years, seeing him grow from a boy to a young man, completely motionless and unaffected by all stimulus, and Dr. Loomis is absolutely adamant that this boy is the single most dangerous person he's ever faced in his entire career simply because he has "the devil's eyes."
Logically speaking, what Dr. Loomis is saying makes no sense. Michael hasn't said a word or done a thing since the inciting incident with his sister, he has to be cared for like a coma patient for god sake, he doesn't even move on his own volition or use his own muscles to do basic things like picking up a glass or taking a pill. By all accounts, no matter what Michael did to warrant his being institutionalized, Michael has not exhibited any behavior or sign whatsoever of even basic cognition let alone clear and present danger like Loomis claims. Moving him from a high-security facility to a less secure one specialized in patient care and rehabilitation is only logical, which makes what happens next all the more horrifying.
Seeing Michael do so much as voluntarily lift a finger or shift his eyes would be shocking enough to warrant closer examination, so imagine how terrified and shocked the transfer bus driver must have been when Michael suddenly sprung up into action and started beating on him with all the strength of a silverback gorilla.
What Loomis couldn't get anyone to understand was the fact that Michael was no patient. Michael was not human.
what a fantastic scene....Pleasence was the best.
What really got me was when Michael escaped, then they were all "You should've told somebody." I I honestly expected him to frickin deck someone.
They had the balls to blame him for it.

They were ingnorant and they hadn’t done the work properly unlike dr loomis who had been with Michael every day and month who began to understand what he had seen and how dangerous Michael was to everyone around him
This is just like movie studios who tell a director he can make the movie he wants, then they demand all kind of changes against his will, then when the movie that they approved of bombs, they blame the director and look for someone else to take over the next sequel.

It's writing and scenes like this by Carpenter and Hill that separates Halloween from all other horror and slasher movies. We still watch this and are completely fascinated by Michael and his psyche.
Micheal almost loves the cat and mouse with Loomis. They're relationship is more fascinating to me because he never really wants to kill Loomis. He just knocks him out of the way. In h5 when he almost gives the knife to Loomis u see the excitement in Loomis that maybe he's changed him but yet he falls back to his own darkness. Donald pleasance is one of the finest actors who always have an A performance
Even though it's kinda better than in the sequels, it still bothers me that nobody would take Loomis warnings and claims about Myers danger seriously when he clearly seems to know the guy better than anyone else. Especially after spending entire hours alone with him.
Thankfully in the last film they FINALLY seemed to realize how dangerous the mute asshole is a throw him into a maximum security shit.
Would've been super creepy if Michael turned to him, smiled, then started looking back out the window when he asked, "you fooled them haven't you Michael? But not me."

He didn't act like he was above a small horror production and gave it his best effort, and because of that the character not only helps to elevate the movie itself and the genre; but he made it possible for other great actors to do the same. Look at how many really well acted horror films we've had since then.
That's not to say that earlier actors didn't take their roles seriously. It's just that doing a high profile Hitchcock movie didn't get the same respect as doing a genre movie and many big stars and well-known actors used to stay away from the smaller productions. I really think DP helped to change that

Michael face at the end or the scene when Loomis said but not me. Loomis knew that Michael was full of shit. It was that expression that shown that Michael anger and disappointment that prove that he is very cunning and Loomis knew that he should never get out.
This scene was really terrific because it explains where Michael was kept away for fifteen years. Not sure why it wasn't added in the original theatrical release. Hell even the dialogue is great which is rare for a horror movie.

my favorite scene out of the whooooole franchise is that moment and when Loomis says "he's waiting." and the doctor responding with just those simple words "....for what?" For me that was the scene that foreshadowed the movie and the sequels that followed, each one all going back to the night of 1978 and opening all the different kinds of branches of story arcs, the Thorne trilogy timeline, the H20 timeline, and now the final timeline. Loomis couldn't tell but everyone knew that it all had to do with his destiny
Donald Pleasance was brilliant as Loomis- everything he did or said built the suspense in the same way that John William’s score in Jaws did- by the time you finally see the monster, you’re already half out of your seat with dread- or under it. Loomis was scared, and Pleasance made you feel that fear, see it in his face and voice. HE was the true “special effect” here, far better than any CGI or gore could ever be at making Myers a force of evil to run screaming from
Say what you want about the extended edition it was good to get more Donald Pleasance screen time as Dr. Loomis. His demeanor is much more calmer and collected in the first movie earlier in his profession compared to how later in his slow transition to his obsessive and hysterical fear when he realized how dangerous Michael really was.
It's ironic, he was not deemed as a threat or security risk because of his catatonic state but that oversight is ultimately what enabled him to escape and become a notorious serial killer. Psychologically, it's brilliant. From a psychiatric standpoint, you would think his stoic behavior would raise some question and alarm.
I really want this scene included in the movie. What a missed opportunity, Donald Pleasance Dr Loomis was brilliant, and we got to see more of Michael as a kid, and the kid who played him was fantastic! He really did look like he had no life in him, while it seemed like something bad was eventually going to happen with him, and it sends chills.

michael's face changes each time we see a closeup. His mouth is usually open. People think of Myers just blank faced looking at a wall, but even when he is unmasked in the original movie we see Tony Moran with his mouth open with emotion on his face.
I think it would be a good idea to make a movie about all the time Michael was in the asylum with Loomis as his doctor so you could learn what he did in order to help his patient. I have always wanted to learn more about Michaels years in there
Chaos Comics did a 3-part series that explored Michael's time in the asylum - and why Loomis became so obsessed. It was fantastic! Would make a great movie or series.
The novelization of the film does expand on Michael’s time at Smith’s Grove.

I forget where I originally saw it, but there was once talk of a Michael Myers mini-series that did just that, focus on Michael's time spent inside Smith's Grove and the effect that he had on other patients and staff. I thought it would be great because I love the lore so much, but they would have to be careful because everything we know says that Michaels was nearly a model patient, so a lot of it might be "boring" since it wasn't like Michael was killing at the asylum or anything of that sort. But I still would watch it!

Loomis is a legend. I wish someone would write a movie about him capturing or profiling another psychopath in his younger days.
Backstory - Loomis is a phychiatrist who is innately aware of human emotions..He almost has a sixth sense of seeing people for who thry really are. It shows him.in court testifying on behalf of the state where a defemdant has fooled everyone including court ordered therapists that he has multiple personality disorder and is not aware of the murders he commits. Loomis after examining him and studying his background realizes he is a fake and fully aware and exposes him in court causing the.man to.explode in court showing his true colors.
Plot Point 1 / Big Event - Loomis is hired by the police to help track a killer of children. The police are completwly baffled . . .
Plot Point 2 - Loomis relaizes the killer of the children in actuallity is a police officer who was assigmed the case. Loomis confronts.him and a standoff fight ensues and loomis escapes with his life.
ending - These.events then can wind right into Loomis.meeting a 5 year old.boy who he is told.murdered his sister and is very very disturbed child. Dr Loomis asked what is the boys name. He is told the boys name is Michael Myers..
