@@AmeliaKnows I'm no expert, but to my ear Meryl's singing has improved in everything along the way up until now (with the exception of FFJ of course, though she was AWFULly good in that too :). I actually think she sounds best now, in this 3rd season of NMITB, than in any of the previous musicals she's done (not to say she wasn't very good in all of those as well).
I'd add to that, it may also involve the way she's chosen to sing for each vehicle based on each character - her intonation, so to speak (again, I'm no expert). Like she often does with her speaking voice, I'd guess that she also makes subtle changes to her singing voice to best inhabit the character as she sees fit.

We have the same heartstring. I fell in love with both of these songs as well. I sang my children to sleep with hushabye mountain for years and years. I had a friend whose mama sang to them every night. I loved sleepovers there.
Once upon a December still makes me stop and close my eyes when I hear it. Even at 47.
And now Look for the Light.
What a beautiful pleasure to have one more to sing to my grand babies when it’s my turn.
For now I’ll just have to keep humming to myself and singing friend’s children to sleep when needed.❤️

I had misgivings about S3. I thought that they would just rely on all that star power (Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd) and just make people watch it because the big stars were there, or just to watch this season fizzle out after liking S1 and S2. But then this song came on...and my goodness!! It set the whole stage, so to speak. (SPOILER ALERT) I got the feeling it was gonna be a mother-son situation because of how poignant this song was.

I feel so proud of this moment. It hits both Steve Martin and Martin Short, but particularly Martin Short which honestly seems pretty fitting to me. It makes perfect sense that season 3 focuses entirely on Oliver’s theater disaster. To me, season 1 focuses mainly on Charles and season 2 focuses mainly towards Mabel, so season 3 focusing on Oliver seems like the right choice to me. It fits well like a hand in a glove. 😢

Agreed, though to me it feels more like Season 1 is Mabel's season (Tim was a childhood friend, Oscar, Zoe etc.) and Season 2 was Charles' season (the painting, Rose Cooper, his father etc.) But of course they all have moments to shine throughout. They're a great trio.

She was credited with "additional material." for that song. The lead composer/lyricist are Benj Pasek (music) & Justin Paul (lyrics) of Dear Evan Hansen and Dogfight fame. I don't know if Sara wrote the musical bridge, or the arrangement for the two female voices, or some of the lyrics or all three. Hush little one
let me sing you to sleep
    moonlight has come
now drift over to a dream
    sail from the day
    to the wonders
    awaiting you out there
    in the deep
    off little one
chase the wind on the waves
    adventure is calling
    so go and be brave
    but if you get lost
    as you're tossed
in the dark of the sea
    look for me
    I will
wait at the shore for you
    I will
    weather each storm
    standing by till
safe you return from the night
    my love is a lighthouse
    so darling
    my darling
look for the light (the light)
the light (the light, the light)
    I will
wait at the shore for you
    I will
    weather each storm
standing by till (standing by till)
safe you return from the night
(safe, safe you return from the night)
    my love is a lighthouse
    so darling
    my darling
    look for the light
    the light

I'd give anything for Death Rattle Dazzle to be a real musical that one can watch.

This song gave me chills and feels I did not expect! Revealing her character's eagerness to be a broadway star and the show's true musical essence of looking for the truth and light in every season. (Found it on spotify!)

This is the kind of moment that other tv shows would try to write... And we'd all have to overlook that the moment wasn't as powerful as they meant it to be...or the song wasn't very memorable...or the actors weren't all that moved.
OMITB succeeded in actually delivering that moment. As an audience, we didn't have to guess what they meant or use our imaginations to make it greater than it really was. They nailed it!
