- Say hello to Weber's first coffee brewer: The BIRD™
Its unique design stands apart from espresso, French Press, or pour-over to create something all its own: a rich and complex coffee brewed in a sleek, innovative machine with minimal fuss. Short for Brew In Reverse Direction, the BIRD is the first non-bypass brewer to create piston-driven vacuum brews in a glass device. The BIRD is an entirely new platform for baristas and coffee aficionados to explore uncharted territories in brewing, both in homes and in cafés alike.

Weber Workshops finally answering the question, "Can we get people to pay $500 for a French press?"
@@Daniel-kd4frThat actually was a joke though. This seems to be for real…
@@Daniel-kd4fr selling it does not make it not a joke.
It's cool af, but yeah can't justify that.
It actually isn't a French Press. They don't use paper filters and that is why you get the mouth of a FP, so this is a 500 bucks Aeropress
I'm actually worried that the price would be more than 500 give how much they charge the other accessories
This is one of the most over engineered pieces of coffee equipment I have ever seen and I love it
^^ It's not that over engineered. Overpriced? I bet it is, but not over engineered, I have seen worse atrocities.
This is 100%, without a doubt, the most beautiful ad ive ever seen for a piece of coffee equipment. Whoever shot and edited this, was worth every dollar!
Agree. That POV facing up at the shower was downright kinky. 10/10.
Look… is it beautiful? Absolutely. Well designed and well built? Almost certainly. Is it worth whatever they’re going to charge for it? Absolutely not.
Maybe not to you, but it absolutely will be to many.
People with more money than sense. Just get a French press for a tenth the price. No need for paper filters.
@@fillflashdetailer8838 As an espresso guy, I completely get spending what seems like a ridiculous amount of money on what seems like a simple pleasure. HOWEVER… this is literally just a french press that more than likely doesn’t make any better coffee. It’s the equivalent of buying a solid gold french press (lowkey that might be cheaper).
They're charging $360 US.
It's sold out as of April 7, 2024
@@isaaco5679 You sound broke
Although I feel like conceptually it's just a more complicated aeropress, can't deny how beautiful it is.
except you don't press, you pull
Pipamoca
@@pavelgrebnev3868 I had no clue what word that was until I googled it, but huh it does seem pretty similar. However the bird brewer seems more immersion brew while the pipamoka seems to rely more on the water percolating through the basket to extract the coffee
pressing seems easier@@WeberWorkshops
@@WeberWorkshops how innovative🤣
To me, it's absolutely worth the price of admission given the design, aesthetic, craftsmanship, and the Claw. If it were just a bit bigger, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
350ml will be the launch vehicle, but you never know what the future holds
Sounds like an Italian press to me 😂
I have it and it’s simply brilliant! For those who appreciate engineering, design, and well made objects, it’s absolutely worth it.
Looks like a hell of a lot of fun to make coffee and let the parts spin down the screws.
1:02 I actually started laughing out load (in a good way) when all the automatic twisty stuff happened 😂
Hmmmm i was more fascinated by the ad about that thing than the thing itself. This ad is perfect.
can't wait for James Hoffmann to review this
My answer is yes! I’m already on the list to be notified. Everything I own from Weber is simply amazing! I have a problem and can’t quit cool coffee gear. At least I admit I have a problem.
first step is acceptance 👏
It's looks like a manual Clover machine, that Starbucks used to have. To me, that's exciting!
I agree, I think it is the same principle - a "reverse cafetière". Mind you, the Clover machine was $11k 😂
Gonna be my travel companion on my work trips! Can’t wait!!!
I just snagged one on the 3rd offering after missing out the first two. So happy!!!
right on! congrats
I'm definitely going to be using this design of coffee maker on my space ship.
The spinny things when taking it apart are very cool.
Gorgeous piece of kit 🔥
A French press that finally removes the hassle of cleaning a French press? And with a paper filter!!! I’m in!!!
Yay, more unnecessary waste! Huzzah! 🤦♀️
I’ll be waiting for the reviews, but this thing looks amazing.
Interesting, would be curious to see this thingy on a James Hoffman's channel.
Stunning!!!
So it's a full immersive percolator brewer with an agitation arm. This is the coffee equivalent of the spatula Mr. Krabs gets SpongeBob to buy in the episode "Help Wanted".
I wish this was made for bigger batches! Think this would have been the perfect to make 1L no fuss batches for when you have guests
always room for a big brother addition
@@WeberWorkshops BigBird (tm)
I love how you added the "clicks" to the motion of this winged nut so satisfying, It's not false advertisement right? and the quality to detail especially at 0:39 where you can clearly see properly torqued screw... not almost stripped at all. That makes me wonder... Did you couldn't machine the slot in the big stainless hardened screw and those mixing prongs and you maybe have to tighten this tiny m3 to it's limits so the entire thing doesn't dissasemble itself during coffee making. It costs same ammount as like 5 aeropress. So you can gift 4 of them to friends and have a great coffee wherever you go not just home
Okay I just got mine. Time for life changing coffee….!
Hat mich total abgeholt :)

Totally picked me up :)
The tracking shot to reveal spinning was very dynamic and impressive.
What a perfect video! Nice excecution
thank you!
Rlly cool but not gonna be surprising if it costs more than some budget espresso machines
I bought both a rok press and grinder for less than this thing. They were both used but have been serving me well. Hell a decent French press can be less than a tenth this price. Lol
Price: $360 US
Sold out
Nobody: can you make utterly complicated french press, exceptionally well build with unnecessary beautiful design, overly exotic material and call it BIRD just for fun?
Webber: ¥€$
That just sounds like a French press with extra steps.
As usual with a Weber workshop product, i will say this looks phenominal, and I am sure this works amazingly. I also assume that this will probably not be in the price range of anyone outside of an upper 6 figures or 7 figures salary.
So it's reportedly $360... Which, is really expensive for what it is. But is that "high six figures / seven figures" expensive...no not at all.
Coffee is my primary hobby and while yes I'm by no means poor I'm no where near even "high six figures" and I'm an instant "buy" on this
@@jmeyering11 For anything Weber this is really cheap. I would expect it to be no less than 500 USD.
Never going to buy it, but it does look really cool.
Oh yes this is nice!!!!
Very cool concept. I'd be curious to know how different the coffee is vs a longer aeropress recipe. Hopefully it's not too pricy so I can find out.
I use an Espro press on the same principle. Ditch the lid, press the dual filters to the bottom, tip the ground coffee on top, add water, stir and let it stand for 4 min.
Then the slightly awkward bit of pulling up the filter and removing it. The "Reverse Cafetière" method.
Comes in at just under $500 😂😂
The open fire 😂😂
Why does this look like a coffee hipster parody video?
because it is, intentionally or not
As a coffee roaster, this seems like an excellent addition to the brew testing station. Can't wait!
we would tend to agree. one extra tool in the QC arsenal
This company supposedly makes product but when you go their website, everything is sold out. Great job guys. I will shop somewhere else.
sorry to hear that. the BIRD will be available middle of April if you change your mind
That looks amazing 👍
I always wanted an aeropress made of glass, is this the closest?
I think they're releasing a glass aeropress next year
@@mikepanton this sounds.. not safe
@@krazyolie I'm super interested to see how it turns out
@@mikepantonbut will it work with an artisanal wood fire? This cup took 2 hours to make.
Since the amount of coffee in the brewer remains the same no matter if you pour a cup or not, it's definitely worth the wait.
I need it.😮😮
Has coffee gone too far? Do we really need 500 ways to make a cup of coffee?
how does the press work like aeropress if its not air tight?
Like it looks cool but seriously I doubt it makes coffee any better than the Hario switch or clever dripper and probably costs as much as a Lelit Bianca
Nah lelit bianca is like 3k. This will prob be 500, in most extreme case 1000. I am not saying it will be cheap but comparing it to the Bianca doesn't make sense.
Also I am not saying it makes better coffee. If they didn't invent coffee dark arts it probably isnt better than an aeropress😂
how does the brew differ meaningfully from an aeropress? i like that it is capable of making larger batches.
Take an aero press and grind up five $100 bills with the coffee for an identical experience.
@@truantray Actually, I think it's more a reversed French Press...but more complicated and with more waste (filter). Pricetag: $360
More like syphon brew without overheating for me @@Kayoyo100
Aeropress actually has pressure on the brew during extraction, this device is an over engineered French press. The brew goes through the filter via gravity, not pressure.
@@therobprattActually, the coffee is pulled through the filter mostly by suction, as a partial vacuum is created in the bottom section as the filter is pulled up.
Looks awesome! What a beautifully made brewer.
I am a bit confused ^^ is it a mix between an Aeropress and a French Press? If so, what would be the way to use it? Like a French press (4 minutes immersion) and then extract the coffee with pressure?
What would be the advantage of the BIRD compared to the other brewer?
Thanks ☺️
Amazing product. I follow you guys on all social media but don't see any sign up for your newsletter option on your website. Am I blind or does it not exist?
there should be a popup for that if you wait a few seconds. thanks!
Looks sick! Know lets see if the price makes me sick.
I'm certain you can produce far more pressure with a screw than the 1.5 or so bar of an AeroPress, although not as smoothly. I bet it is a great cup of coffee.
Ah yes . The 360$ glass aeropress
Hi James, I knew you would be here too 😅
This is right up your alley.... for a video idea at least 😉
Your fellow coffee lover and sunscriber to James Hoffmann
So you combined an area press and french press and made it much more complicated twith much more moving parts than both? But looks like an interesting brewer for around 30-40 € max
Projected retail is between 300 and 400 USD for the BIRD, aeropress standard now cost 32. Your value estimate is way off.
It wasn't ment as an estimate, but what I would be willing to pay for it :)
Cool. I'm still gonna use my $18 aeropress.
Aeropress standard is selling for 32 now
i know smh@@leesteely8875
Is the included paper filter the same as the EPF sold on the site? If I want to buy additional which size should I buy 55mm or 58mm?
same supplier, and we'll send you enough spare with the BIRD to get through a year of brewing...also will have extra available for purchase
Need one
Wow you might finally have me.
we love a slow courtship
too late for me, already got a Pulsar
Glad we can have a French press without the mess :)
Ummm ok? Is running the screen under the faucet too much effort. If that's too much work then slap a paper filter over the end. It's almost as easy as washing a portafilter.
I wish it had larger capacity! And I wish there was a white version!
Dope.
This is cool because of its full immersion brew, but also using the brew bed (cake/bed filtration), along with a paper filter to make a clean but big body brew.
I’m down for this idea, I want one.
we think you'll love it!
the Pulsar already takes care of all those elements :P
Who cares about the Pulsar in this context? You’re talking a well made, but boring plastic device versus a highly overengineered device. They each have their audience.
Like an Aeropress.
Is this making coffee Closer to an espresso in body or a filter coffee
Can this be used without a paper filter for those who enjoy a heavier french press mouthfeel?
absolutely! paper filter is optional
Very nice presentation and an interesting idea, my one issue would be not having a spinning mechanism which wont develop into a carpal tunnel with daily use.
there's ways around that
Im in love, i want ❤
Nice.
Does it actually make that click sound when it winds? (Important Q 😅)
it does
Is the fireplace included?
We request more magnets for v2 of this brewer. Why isn't it all magnetic?
Pushing the coffee puck through the water? Interesting.
This is aesthetically gorgeous, and no doubt functional, but I don't know how you could justify the purchase of what looks to be an exorbitantly priced french press with a fidget spinner lid. Kudos to the engineering team behind this beautiful piece of kit though.
"a sleek, innovative machine with minimal fuss"
Yeah, right. Way over-complicated design = one of the fussiest brewers I've ever seen 😂
So is this like a manual Clover?
it feels like this is designed to over extract, or it's a cold brewer
reinventing the wheel
Noice! Modify the design to have some kind of a detachable arm to make it easier and smoother when filter the coffee.
360 dollars (£300) thats too much!! It essentially does what a AeroPress does. But looks fancy doing it.
can I send one over? I'd love to do an honest review and unboxing!
I dont even drink coffee and i need it
Aeropress but complicated with more parts.
Weber "Same but different" meme
Aeropress but for rich people 😆
I will buy one, and the actual reason not becasue its "new" or so fancy engienieerd. I like the concept btw... not gonna lie.
NO PLASTIC! And that is the ultimate winner.
Can't wait for the look on their faces when the coffee tastes the same, but they must say "It tastes better" to ease the feeling of an empty wallet.
How many ounces can it make with each brew?
just under 12 oz or 350 ml
i would totally buy this if I could brew at least 500mL at a time.
@@WilsonYeungno you wouldn’t.
Hopefully daddy Hoffman will review this piece of art
Wow something so cool i cant afford.
… next.
when can i sign up on the website?
should see a pop-up soon after you arrive at weberworkshops.com and if that's not happening, try viewing from anothe device/browser or clearing cache on the one you're using or using private/incognito browsing
Thought I was watching an SNL skit.
looks like they hired that videographer from tiktok who makes snazzy product commercials
If using a French Press, why use a paper filter? The screw push bar is cool, but I thought the metal filter in a French Press were to preserve oils in the coffee.
cleaner cups for those that desire them
😍😍
why is this so genius? isn't it a fancy aeropress that holds less heat?
Much larger + well engineered. Will definitely be overpriced though
Aeropress siphon combo lol
Mans doesn’t have central heating cause he can’t afford it after buying this French press
I cannot WAIT to buy this
Immersion brewing + (paper) filtration? Really interesting concept, excited what the usual suspects have to say about it!
I havent heard of the aeropress either!
it would be amazing if it was released a year ago. now we already use the Pulsar which also gives no bypass immersion filter brews (+more versatility if you want a no bypass no immersion brew) and I'm not a big fan of buying several devices for the same thing. I'd like more companies to spend more time helping farmers instead of making high end expensive devices

no way that fancy wingnut isn't going to get hung up on that threaded rod as soon as it's even marginally gummed up, I sure wouldn't want to clean it

@@WeberWorkshops where might i do this if I live in New York
The lifting mechanism is stepped by the clicking sound in this video?
yes
@@WeberWorkshops Thanks for replying, similarly what about the moon rake? Is the turning stepped and have that clicking sound?
I don’t really get the comparison to the aeropress, or a french press. Form factor? Okay but the working principle is more like a siphon coffee maker. Just instead of a heat source, one literally pulls a vacuum. I want one of these.
The comparison arises from the fact that the Aeropress is an immersion brewer with a paper filter, as well. I'm trying to understand how pulling instead of pushing impacts the flavor of the finished brew? Does it?
@@MatthewLevin That’s a very good question. And I don’t have a definitive answer to that. To be honest, I don’t like the Aeropress because it’s plastic and I don’t like plastic. Comparing the Bird brewer to a French press, I would expect the Bird brewer to make a cleaner cup, due to the paper filter.
Regarding pushing/pulling, while I don’t have any data to back this up, pulling a vacuum might have an impact on flavour compared to pushing for positive pressure. I do make cold brew under vacuum and it takes about 15 minutes compared to some 12 hours to extract the coffee grounds. I also like the flavour profile I get from siphon coffee makers - which I think are closer to the Bird brewer than Aeropress or french press. The issue I have with siphons is that to my taste the water gets too hot (at the end there’s a rolling boil in the upper chamber). With the Bird brewer I could keep the temperature below boiling point. I can also have as long or as short an immersion time as I want. I could also bloom the coffee grounds, and bloom with cooler water to preserve the more volatile compounds in the coffee.
So to me, the Bird brewer brings quite some innovation and more control than other brewing equipment.
It also is ridiculously over engineered. And I love that. Will it be expensive? Sure. But it’s what you’re willing to spend. If you’re looking for cheap and cheerful, then an Aeropress is probably better for you.
@@gertbehrmann4877 thanks that all makes sense. I'm usually very hesitant about using plastic, but I feel the food grade plastic used with the Aeropress is safe enough. I use it for travel, so the strength of the plastic is important to me (glass would break in my bag). If I'm not traveling, my go to is a stainless steel kalita wave. I appreciate your take on it! Definitely an intriguing device.
You make coffee brewing tools look like some kinda multiplex system that requires proper training to use 😂😂😂😂😂
