      quick thing. I used a plastic filter holder for good portion of my life so I understand that you said it got out brewed by all the other.
      but what changed my life (which suprised me a lot) is when i got a ceramic filter holder.
      it might not sound like a big change but it still makes some of my favorite coffee.
      other than that I now have new list of coffee brewers I have to get.
      thanks.

      Hi Lance, really love your content and purchased BIRD and just got it delivered. But sadly, with the same price, they changed the production method to the brewing basket from fully beautifully billet CNC to MIM ( Metal injection molding) with a rough sand blasting finish. Although the functionality is still the same, but much cheaper looking compared to yours showed in the video. And all the market pics and videos on the official website still showing CNC ones. What a shame.

    Thanks you just saved me $350, I honestly think lots of these modern add a lot of complexity in both brewing and cleaning but without actually changing much on what can be achieved on both much cheaper more simple brewers. It’s living on the grass is always greener, the market has been overflowed with all sort of brewers many of them not really delivering something new. I already wasted enough on all these promises and always just resort back to the old ones like v60 and Aeropress, if it ain’t broken don’t fix it as the saying goes.

      I agree, and It's why I appreciate what Lance said: it's a showpiece, it's to have fun, it will brew good coffee but you can do that in other and simpler ways. So if this gives you the show you want and the joy you want, great. If you're just looking to brew great coffee with little hassle, it's not for you. And both of these approaches are totally valid. It may even be that one person may want both approaches depending on the day, and that's part of the joy of making coffee, whether it's this brewer or the many others out there. Have fun and find the stuff you like.

      Totally agree, I find with V60, Aero, French, and Chemex, I'm almost never bored and always have something new to experiment with related to beans, grind size, etc. All those combined isn't even half the cost of the Bird.

      @@brianchu8147 Absolutely. Hell, I've got an Aeropress, a Clever Dripper, and a large assortment of various flat bed and conical brewers (V60, Kono, CAFEC Flower, Orea v3, Origami...) and I'm having plenty of fun. But I sure do appreciate all the ingenuity going in to fun brewers for people to enjoy. Sometimes we can overly try to min/max our caffeine production when we can instead just have fun making tasty bean water and respect the work designers and engineers put into the diverse hobby.

      Any reason you prefer it over a pour over? I have an Aeropress and have used it in various ways to make some tasty coffee, but I still find that a pour over is so much simpler and produces great coffee that I can't find the Aeropress to be a daily brewer. But I'm very interested to hear about other views on that.

      Hello aeropress-cult member.
      I'm also looking forward to it.
      @error.418 - I like that it's not stressful. It's hard to make a bad cup in the aeropress, so if I have an off morning because I have no coffee yet, it's still pleasant.
      Pour over is so much easier to screw up when sleep deprived. I feel the aeropress is French press unstressful, but with a better / cleaner flavor.

    • @TriStarFamily
      @TriStarFamily 8 місяців тому

      @error.418 Largely due to the simplicity and the versatility. It's hard to really mess up a cup in the aeropress if you keep your grind size and ratios in order. So much so that my wife (who was never a coffee drinker) has started making coffee with it for herself most mornings. I still love pourover as well, but I can take the aeropress with me on the road and get a solid mug-full or near espresso strength if I want something a little more stout.

    Thank you for making this video. I was not on board before, and I'm still not, but this helped me understand it a little better. It's still just immersion with agitation, put through a paper filter. That said, it's a beautiful piece that looks fun to use.
    And just a side note on putting french press through a V60 - it drains much faster if you stir all the contents together in the french press, then immediately pour all the contents into the V60. This allows the larger particles to form some sort of filter bed, which prevents some of the clogging. It's what I like to do with cold brew too.

      Some studies over the last decade have suggested that coffee oils (that pass through metal filters but not paper) are not good for us.
      Beyond that, paper filtration allows more clarity. I'm not against French press coffee, but I do prefer a paper filter.
      Plus paper is biodegradable and DOES grow on trees.

      @error.418 8 місяців тому +3

      @@kruks "Plus paper is biodegradable and DOES grow on trees." While mostly true, the processing of wood pulp to make paper does create a lot of waste, especially when it comes to chemically treating the paper like bleaching. I don't know if you've ever smelled a paper mill, but there's a lot going on to produce paper. So it's not as perfect as it may seem. That's not to say stop using paper filters, I use tons and agree with your take for my personal enjoyment, but let's not fool ourselves.

    Nice video Lance! A few months ago, like you, I tried sandwiching a Pulsar filter under the mesh filter in my French Press. I put a little hole in the middle for the plunger shaft so I could actually “install” it in the filter sandwich. It made a decent cup and definitely aided in cleanliness, I just don’t know if it was worth the extra effort and cleanup. The Bird definitely seems like a nice piece of gear, and there is no denying Weber build quality, it just seems like all these new brewers aren’t drastically better enough to make them worth investing in. I’ve been fortunate enough to try some of the newer brewers to the market, but I keep finding myself coming back to a V60 style or Orea/ flat bottom brewer, or Pulsar if I want an immersion brew. As usual it’s always nice to hear your perspective on the leading edge coffee stuff!!

    Lots of people thank you for your honesty in reviews and that’s true for sure but I think it’s also important to realize your awareness when it comes to reviewing things. You’re always putting things in context. No, of course this isn’t going to revolutionize your cup in a way that makes the coffee worth this price alone, but you still put it up against some other immersion methods to let us know how it stacks up and where it shines. And you remind us that this is a luxury product with heirloom production quality and a lot of R&D to back it up. It’s hard for us watching from home to understand how something like this feels to use, and that’s really a key aspect of this. 50% of water through gabi b (or anything that can sort of drip water like espresso basket)
    after water is in - use wdt needles to poke grounds from all of the sides which will result in coffee grounds surfacing (wdt the surface a bit to make it nice)
    wait 4 minutes (sometimes i forget and it goes to 10-15 lol)
    drain
    I don't touch bed in this stage as it pretty firmly set
    - option a : remove clever from the cup and add remaining 50% through gabi, wait 4 minutes and drain - immersion
    - option b: keep clever on the cup add remaining 50% through gabi - percolation
    high ey, every, single, time
    with that said I'll get this weber thing for guest entertaining

    Thumbs up because I love you, Lance, but I struggled all the way through trying to work out the problem the Weber designers were trying to solve... If the best thing going for this new product is that it's a joy to use, then I would ask why are people not finding enough joy in any of the other brewers? Do people really need to pay that much for joy? I guess they must... Look at how much rich people are spending on all their status-clutching things... When I brew coffee, I savour each sensorial moment from the opening of the bean container to the grinding right through to the final pour - whichever method I'm using, including espresso... and that's all before the drinking! Even if I need to be quick, I enjoy the process and try not to be rushed. I get the idea of Weber Bird joy, but there is so much joy to be had in any process that works well enough to solve the problem before us - in this case, how to extract a flavoursome and satisfying liquid from the roasted seed of the coffee fruit. This design concept is bordering on the ironic... It won't be long before someone makes a spoof of overengineering the simplicity of coffee extraction, if they haven't already. I'll stick with the wise maxim of 'beans before machines'... 🙏

    Could you pour the water first when grinding fine, to get more agitation? Similar to a Clever brew, when sometimes you fill with water and then add the grounds last.

    Just too fiddly. Put cup on scale, dose with ground coffee, and add water just off boil. Wait to cool or stir gently. Drink when temperature is right. Try to avoid drinking wet grounds at the bottom. Add a little water, slosh, and pour onto your lawn or garden. Keep your mornings simple. ;)

I imagine I'll stick with my Pulsar, but I certainly understand the appeal.

    Lance, I'm wondering - how easy would this be to use for a more novice coffee drinker? My wife appreciates a good cup of coffee but doesnt have the patience/desire to do a pour over. She usually goes for french press for simplicity so im curious if this might be a good option for someone like her (not that a beginner would spend the money on this, just theoretically). Put another way, where does this brewer fall on a chart of effort in to quality coffee out

    I think in terms of what happens to the brew, the next thing to this might be the aeropress... we have agitation and the coffee pulling through a filterpaper. In all honesty, considering how aeropress seems to always carry a little more astringency than other brewers, this doesn't really seem to be worth it for the price. It's just another expensive weber toy. You get this thing for the playing around, high quality materials and the engineering, not better coffee.

    this thing would have to do my laundry as well as not over extract the coffee like I think it inevitably is designed to do.
    no difference than putting a manual air frother in your french press, at least it cleans the grounds easy for you tho I guess

    • @MegaEscalope
      @MegaEscalope 8 місяців тому +3

      In immersion there is no "new" water during the extraction so there is a point where the water is saturated and the extraction slows down drastically

    • @dvd7235
      @dvd7235 8 місяців тому +3

      @justinbouchard Like Lance and @MegaEscalope state, overextraction isn't really a thing in immersion brewing. It'll extract until an equilibrium is reached. So as far as the quality of your cup is concerned, there's no upper limit on immersion length. There's also no benefit to terminating the steeping before equilibrium has been reached because at that point you're just needlessly adding another variable you can mess up. You could technically still over-extract if you grind excessively fine, but that's just not a realistic scenario to judge a brewer by. That's no different from comically messing up your grounds/water ratio.
