The team at Garage Gym Reviews is passionate about delivering in-depth fitness equipment reviews so you can create the best home gym possible. With our combined decades of experience in the fitness industry, we’re also pretty used to seeing home gym mistakes, especially when people are initially building a home gym.
Although Coop has previously given his 2 cents on the matter, we decided it would be helpful to bring in our trusted friend, Jason Khalipa. We’ve previously seen Jason Khalipa’s garage gym, and the CrossFit champ knows a thing or two about mistakes people are bound to make if they don’t know any better.
Whether it’s doing the correct workouts to maximize strength or buying the best garage gym equipment, Jason knows how to do it right and gives advice based on his years of experience building gyms.
Jason Khalipa is the 2008 CrossFit Games champion and knows his way around a barbell (and a garage gym). He is also the owner and CEO of NCFIT.

Loved filming this Coop, thank you for having me. Looking forward to our next video together.
Grateful for you coming out brother; can't wait to do more!
Jesus loves you
Awful lot of "garage" talk in this video. What if I identify as a basement?
heck off Brandon!
I know some guys in hard hats that do "conversion therapy"
🤣
Basement lives matter
The reality is that there are no pitfalls with basement gym training so this video doesn't apply. I can confirm as I too identify as basement.
Great content. Jason’s comfort on camera made this a really high production
He's a professional for sure!
Khalipa is the goat of OG Crossfit personalities.
Great video, one thing I thought was missing: Not taking safety serious enough. If you're training alone and don't have a spotter or anyone around to get help in case of injury or failure, you need to make sure you do everything possible to keep yourself injury free and safe. I've never hurt myself training, but as I build out my garage gym and some of my family members use the equipment I am like a broken record on that point. I don't want anyone getting hurt at my house, or training anywhere. Wow, listen to me, Sheesh, I'm old.
Very good point, specifically with bench press this is critical
@@JasonKhalipa exactly. The difference between a heavy bar landing on your chest and it landing on your throat is my biggest point on the safety spotters.
Brilliant video. I like his approach and guidance. It’s all about lifestyle. I mix my workouts between my bike rides, machines, dumbbells and kettlebell.
Coop, I like what you have done with your channel and continue to do. My Home gym is essentially what it is because of your channel. Kudos man. Very much appreciated 🤜🏾💪🏾
Need more of this! Great work Coop. 🙌🏻 🔥
Love the yin and yang between coop and Jason
This is all great advice, thanks dudes!
So much motivation in just one video, thanks Jason and Coop, I’m going back to my garage gym 👍
Wow great video, excellent training tips. Well done thanks!!!
Can you do a “How to Level Floor in Garage” video?
this one would be great!
that would be an awesome idea
Love this idea! And just general workaround to deal with a slanted floor
Let’s go Coop & Garage Gym Reviews team!!!!
It's CRAZY that this topic has not been covered a thousand times already. Soooooo manyh home/garage gym videos all over UA-cam and I've struggled to find any videos on how to deal with slopped garage floors. Loong overdue and ready to discussion!
Love Jason. Awesome collaboration!
You two are good together. Thank you. Love the channel.
Great advice on all 10! I'll definitely look to implement the ones I don't already do.
Something sounds up with Jason's audio, almost like his and Coop's audio tracks are both running at the same time and giving an echo every time Jason talks. It sounds like he is constantly talking into a fan.
Probably feedback from their sound monitors on set... They'll fix it quickly i'm sure anyway! Great content all the same!
Coop & Jason, excellent info and tips. Aside from sports and the great outdoors, I work out exclusively from my home. So, I need to be a good idea thief with regards to programming and self-motivation. I got a lot out of this episode. Thank you!
Buenísimo coop excelente contenido lleno dd mucha información se nota la experiencia y conocimiento de Jason. Me gusta verlos platicar a ambos son personas que saben mucho del tema y sus consejos me ayudan
I am already motivated just listening to Jason speak.
thank you! Hope training is going well
Awesome video
Awesome addition Coop...love Khalipa!
Thank you!
When the side eye meme popped up, not gonna lie, I lost it 😂
He plugged that app really smoothly
A good music system is a must. I recommend getting a stereo receiver with some bookshelf speakers.
Jason is good at communicating
Great video guys! Just curious about thinking about having a Neutral Spine however when you lift a sandbag you have to use thoracic extension 🤷. Food for thought.
ya, good point here for sure. Typically when using a stone or sandbag you'll intentionally round out to lap It, and extend a bit further when throwing It over the shoulder. I've found that since the bag/stone is a bracing object against the stomach It seems to support the spine a bit. Definitely some exceptions but in general neutral would be the rule
Awesome!
If you are doing quick jerk crossfit movements just go outside. You don't need take up so much floor space to do that inside.
And look at powertec lever gym you don't need a power rack that again that takes up so much floor space.
Found the guy who has never heard of weather
still luv the Khalipa. the man never ages and looks as strong as hell...these are very good tips, too
Gotta love me some Khalipa!
pretty solid advice..i would have to say though that MOST times people have far more time to get fit and healthy than they think. AND most times that is their excuse. WHY? Because its an easy out..I venture to say everyone on this planet has minimal 30min daily to put towards bettering themselves..Nice video guys.
Hey look it’s Big Andrews home gym in the thumbnail…. Was his mistake not having a tonal??
Jason is the man!
Thank you!
What in the horse shoe is with this guys triceps, wowzers!!! 👏🏻
Floor space is definitely a necessity.
One of the tings Jason said, was to check out UA-cam for proper form/positioning. I think it would be good to give some examples of some that are competent in those areas that are on YT. Since YT has a bunch of carnival barkers that are selling snake-oil advice. There are definitely plenty that are worthy, I just would like to see GGR (and specifically this series) point the good ones out for those that need the help in finding them.
Anyone know what the music playing when he's talking about music is?
Is there a review of home timers?
That’s a new video you could do, best music options
What workout split would you recommend for someone who is just starting out and has a few dumbbells, a barbell and a few plates.
I’d look into a full body type spilt, and the age old (push, pull leg) or (pull, push, leg)
I’d focus just on getting after it and feeling good!
@@b.freedom876 thanks
look up "starting strength"
as many reps as possible is ok for bodybuilding but its proven power lifting with a 5- 10 min rest between set is better and builds more strength, if u want stamina do cardio ,but i guess he is aiming for the small home gym user so it Is a more universal workout method i agree
i workout at home ,and i personally prefer to do minor housework and errands between sets ,as i aim for strength and recovery not bodybuilding timed sets
Curious, what brand of shoes was Jason wearing?
GoRuck
Nice bideo
Jason is awesome! Great content
Pitfall #11:
Doing CrossFit moves instead of Olympic Lifts.
Did not like 3,
Doing fast reps is fine if you are doing lightweight
Anything heavy and you're constantly trying to go fastest possible you will damage your joints long term
"Anything heavy and you're constantly trying to go fastest possible you will damage your joints long term"
Like a crossfitter?
You did stick around for 5 & 6…right?
Yeah, the guy is a crossfitter. Several of the “pitfalls” don’t really apply if you’re lifting for strength or hypertrophy. You don’t need so much empty floor space if you’re not jerking a barbell around as fast as you can or flopping around on the pull-up bar.
@@SamShunkwiler yeah typical CrossFit type gym
@@plmn93 weight training around 20 years
Train around my injuries
Now did do CrossFit instead I never my joints will be in agony,
Olympic lifting weights, is a very technical lift it needs a proper coach who can show you the correct technique
If Olympic lifting was easy you would see guys doing 100 reps in the Olympics
The are technical exercises not designed to do poorly executed with heavy weight and terrible form
Honestly brilliant video, I’m all the way over in the UK near Manchester, I literally watch every video Coops makes and follow Jason on social Media, he has so much enthusiasm, GGR got me into NCFIT, GGR changed my garage and iv had so much advice and good tips but I was lost in my own training just working out every day without a real plan until NCFIT came along and just blew it up out of the water, the programming is second to none, it’s changed it up for me so much, iv been around 40 years and training since I was 20. I’m still discovering so many things and it makes a huge difference to my life outside too. Thanks guys excellent advice here and keep it up we love it 👊🏽🇺🇸💪🏽🇬🇧
Love hearing this! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much Nigel, really appreciate the kid words. Hope training is going great
I didn't know crossfit was still a thing
Big fan of Jason. Would love to train with him. The enthusiasm would be contagious 👍👍
I find him a bit infomercial for my tastes but thats probably just the Brit in me & I'm sure he's a nice guy.
@@northeastcorals I try to be, if you're ever in CA come by one of our gyms. Hope all is well!
Thank you! Really appreciate that
Hey there’s no mistakes in my home gym used for the thumbnail coop! Slander! Haha
Room for a car, HAHAHHA. Nope. Bigger garage, yup! Go Coop!
Basically a Crossfit promo.
Me watching this without money for a garage let alone a garage gym: Interesting..
Am I the only one who thinks this guy sounds like Mark Cuban?
2:14 😂
#1 you do CrossFit
coops getting big compared to the last video with Jason
Did Coop shred down?
I love E-moms
Will you guys ever make a video regarding the sell out to the media company that owns you now? We love some insight and what it means - especially for the content moving forward.
I don't have a video planned, but I will say, GGR was acquired over a year ago and I don't feel much has changed other than a leveling up in all areas. We've made some mistakes and will likely make many more, but ultimately the goal remains at an ever increasing pace, to inform, inspire, and connect the home gym community. I no longer make every single decision, but I still retain ownership, lead the brand direction, and have no plans of leaving anytime soon.
To throw a question back to you...what can we be doing better? We're certainly not infallible and are constantly refining and trying to improve. - Coop
@@GarageGymReviews Hey Coop! Thanks for getting back on this. I've always felt and have appreciated your transparency with the review of products but when I got to know this and it didn't come from you guys, it just felt a little off for me. Regardless, I love this channel and follow the home gym community with a passion.
Here's my top 3 of things you could do:
1. Gym walkthroughs - my wet dream is you going to Jocko Willinks gym and talk to him.
2. Content pieces with skilled lifters like this one
3. Top lists of equipment - I can't get enough of that.
@@andreasbjerrumlarsen6927 Thanks for the feedback! 1. We're working on more and more of these! These are also my favorite videos to watch. Jocko would be a dream of mine as well. I recently started doing BJJ and was greatly inspired by him to do it.
2. DEFINITELY doing more of these. Have some cool athletes we're planning on working with.
3. Yep, always doing more and more of these. Working on a big one for functional trainers that's taken some time to acquire and asSAMble all the units.
I'm grateful for your involvement in the community and giving feedback!
-Coop
You heard what he said, folks. Make room for activities.
Boom goes the dynamite
Coop Are you wearing a BLYT shirt ?
Yeah, I bought a couple of them to try out and now have more than I care to share hahaha
Thanks for the response man! I'll be adding to my collection as well
♥️♥️♥️👍🏽
I spend 45-60 minutes warming up. Starting with creatine then pre-workout, light stretching, getting motivated through music (etc.), and finally, when in the gym, getting a good stretch and blasting music. I don't have a plan for what exercises I'm going to do; I only have a plan for what body parts are being worked. Sometimes I work extra depending on how I feel. I do a 3-day split/rotation, with one or two workouts a day depending on my schedule. I don't really have an issue with recovery. I only take a rest day when my body tells me I need to. On those days, I stick to a little bit of cardio.
Should rename this “CrossFit home gym mistakes”.
Yup
Was thinking the same thing.
Maniacal joint destruction is for the repcount obsessed. Go slow and enjoy the strain, concentrate on healthy form.
Pitfalls 5&6= every crossfitter's problem.
Khalipa is the best.
Hi
seeing Jason gives me hope to keep training 🤣, how an endomorph can be so sharp.
💯💪👍🔝🆒️📷
Not relatable for those not interested in CrossFit or training this way.
*This guy does crossfit. I can't take anything he says seriously.*
sweet
:)
Dang he's better on the camera then u
Not feeling this infomercial talking guy
Crossfit is stupid.
AMRAP. Or, worst form possible.
Good tips, but I will say that a lot of these are just cross fit 101. I would not call a lot of these home gym tips. More like a few home gym tips and then fitness/ workout tips.
