Thank you for these instruction! I am in a walking group of ladies and I plan to make them one for Christmas present. I want to do neck warmer too but I thought I would start with ear warmer first.
Thank you this will help my daughter. She has hearing aids in both ears and in the winter needs to cover them but a toboggans pull them out of her ears. We can adjust the fit of these to compensate for her hearing aids.
Great project and well presented! For the fleece binding - Did you use a straight stitch or the stretch stitch to "stitch in the ditch"? It was hard to tell when you were doing that part and thank you for any helpful hints.
@@JanHowell Thanks! The audio specifically stated "Straight Stitch"!? Then there is another stretch-stitch, typically shown graphically on machines as three straight lines. How is this different from the "lightening-bolt"? I'm just getting into stretch-fabrics with your (these) video(s); so I guess I'll need to test a few stitches on some scraps. (Bought my first fleece-fabric just yesterday!) Thoughts? Excellent videos & thoughts for the "fingerless gloves", "neck warmer", and the "ear warmer". I live in brrr-cold Illinois!
Another WONDERFUL project. I am very much looking forward to your So Simple course! I am a novice. With that in mind, I would love some recommendations on a sewing machine. I own the Singer Esteem and am ready for something else. Even though I'm a beginner, I feel I need a different machine. Long story short, I haven't been able to use the zigzag function and I would love to own a machine where I just need to press the button in order to do so. Keep in mind I'll be learning any new machine on my own. Also, if you haven't thought of it already, it would be great if you included in your So Simple course, different presser feet and other tools/gadgets that would help build your sewing arsenal. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback! I will be talking about presser feet in the course and going over some sewing machine tips. Are you on my email list? Just want to make sure you get notified about the course when it goes live.
Hi Jan, when you see the band onto the main piece and when you stitch in the dish doesn't the straight stitch pop when you stretch onto your head? Or are those both done with the lightning stretch stitch? Thanks.
Good question. It's really strange, but when you stitch in the ditch on the binding, for some reason I haven't had any issues with the seam popping. and I stretch it a lot.

Jan, is there a special needle to use with the sewing machine for this project? This is so cute. Thank you for sharing. I never knew about the way you slip stitched. 💕
Hi Barabara, I just use a universal needle for this project. You can use a ballpoint needle, which is used specifically on knit and stretch fabrics. You can get the full sewing machine needle guide here on my website that might be helpful. There is a printable form for you. youmakeitsimple.com/2019/10/05/sewing-machine-needles-why-choosing-the-right-one-matters/
When you are cutting it out, just make sure the letters are oriented how you want them to be. Of course, one side will be upside down due to the fabric being on the fold. I hope that makes sense.
You can get the pattern here youmakeitsimple.com/product/fleece-headband-ear-warmers-pdf-sewing-pattern-printable-5-sizes/ The free neck warmer pattern and instructions are available here youmakeitsimple.com/2021/12/27/how-to-make-a-fleece-neck-warmer-free-pattern/ Let me know if you have any questions.

I used a straight stitch when "stitching in the ditch" I have never had the seam pop because there is just minimal stretching.
@17:27 - How are you getting stretch for the finished warmer when you straight-stitched it?
You use a small zigzag stitch or lightning bolt stitch
