God I love hearing a writer like Mark talk about the contextual experiences a character will face, an incredible introduction clip. He’s quickly become one of my favorite writers.
I love that Mark brought up the Wisdom of Solomon aspect that I feel the movies fail miserably at. That’s why he shouldn’t be a goofball or perceived as one.
I'm not a fan of the way he's been portrayed in the movies or post-flashpoint myself. I love the way he was written and portrayed in the pre-flashpoint/post-crisis era

Great interview. Mark is one of my favorite writers. A professional who really knows how to do it right, and cares. He clearly loves the characters and universes, knows them inside and out and it shows in all of his great stories. World’s Finest is, for me, DC’s finest, and I can’t wait to get his new series with The Captain.
Really looking forward to this since Waid's take on Captain Marvel is easily one of my favorite portrayals and the fact that he loves and respects the character so much.
He is the right guy to write the new Shazam series. He really knows Cap!
Why won't DC simply give him a new hero name?? 'Captain Epic,' 'Captain Ultimate', 'Captain Mythic'. Why is this so hard for them? Calling him 'Shazam' was a dumb idea from the get-go.

Interesting interview. I loved hearing Waid's history of (and overall verdict on) Captain Marvel, as well as the circumstances behind the all-too-obvious reasons the Monster Society Of Evil multi-issue story arc from the Golden Age Of Comics will never be reprinted.
I love my mighty Thor, Herc, Ares and Wonder Woman. I so love that Mark Waid is tuning Shazam aka The Original Captain Marvel back to his classic look. It's time to bring the World's Mightiest Mortal back to the Big Time. To be the Paragon of Purity and Power.

I'm excited for this series mark waid is one of my all time favorite comic writers he is silver age storytelling personified but his stories don't feel old. And Dan more who has become one of my favorite artists out there in comics since his boom studios work. I hope they fully tackle the mystical side of DC
DC Comics should have renamed him "Captain Marvelous". That was one of Captain Marvel/Billy Batson's superhero names back when he was in development by Fawcett, Parker and Beck back in the days. The name "Captain Thunder" cannot be used because there was already a character named "Captain Thunder".
I really enjoyed this video. I did a rant about his name two weeks ago on my channel and it is nice to see that I may be getting my wish.

great interview! Am very curious about this series. I recently re-read Mark's "Underworld Unleashed" miniseries and it holds up really, really well.

This is going to be a real testament of Waid’s writing talents. I mean Johns tried a limited series before, it just did not resonate with readers, both old and new. How to balance the fun and bright aspects of the story but not at the loss of the stake, is really hard for writing these characters.
This is the best version of the character since Jerry Ordway's version!!! After 2 issues I am board for the long haul I love it!!

As a 50 yr cynical DC fan, I’m excited for the Dawn. Btw, I think Capt Marvel worked well with the JLA in the late 80s.
Speaking of making mismatched characters work, I still love Brave and the Bold 50 (jonn Jones and green arrow)

THOR had a weakness. If he didn't touch his hammer in 60 seconds then he reverts back to human form. Now thats gone!

How about calling him Captain Thunder! Like he was in his first appearance (i.e. Flash Comics Ashcan Edition #1.) After all, the Captain Thunder trademark has been abandoned. And DC could use having a trademark on Captain Marvel/Captain Thunder before he enters the public domain in 2035.
Someone has already trademarked Captain Thunder I hear.
@@danielriba716 I just did a quick trademark search using the US Patent and Trademark Electronic Search System (i.e.TESS) and it shows it as being abandoned on December 15, 2008. It also says it's currently dead. And as you know from Captain Marvel's own history... you get to keep your copyrights for 95 years, but you have to use your trademarks in order to keep them. And the US Patent Office is showing the Captain Thunder trademark as "Dead". Meaning there's not even an application for it, right now. Anyways, I could post links for you to follow, but UA-cam will treat it as spam and block me. Then again, if you are THE Dan Riba whose stories I grew up with, then you are more connected than I am, and can follow the trail on your own; and/or get the right people involved. But trust me, I've been an OIG Auditor for 20 years. I know how to read legalese and dig through government paper work. The trademark is available and DC has a product ready to market that can finally snag it once and for all. All it needs is a Champion.
I had heard wrong. I was told that someone had trademarked the name Captain Thunder and that was the reason DC never persued that approach to the name problem. Thanks for the info. Of course that may have been true...but before 2008....when the trademark was abandoned.

Much of DC really shouldn't be in Captain Marvel's World...!!
This is the way I think it could best be handled.
I hope we see Captain Marvel, Jr. .... and Mary Marvel... The Marvel Family flying ...together... and even some of the Fawcett Characters make the jump into Captain Marvel's World.

I agree, and I THINK Mark does too, but like he says, he's not at liberty to actually do that.
Not a big fan of Jerry Ordway's Wisdom of Solomon "buzzing in your ear", rather have Fawcett makes you supersmart which had a great exampeof JSA BC where had access to lot of information.
I hope he disregards EVERYTHING DC HAS DONE and brings back Fawcett's Captain Marvel... a character who is the original Overpowered Superhero. HE COULD NEVER BE HARMED and was more powerful than Silver Age Superman and faster than any Flash that ever existed. INFINITE POWER. INFINITE SPEED!
As much as I am a fan of the big red cheese, and Mark Waid, I think I'm gonna have to pass on this. Not a fan of Cap and Billy being the same person.
No offense to someone as big as Waid, but what a shit he did to Shazam and not just him. It was intended to "fix" the character and it only screwed up more. Serious! (It's like I always say, there are writers and writers, and even Waid who was a genius at one point, now, at this point, in Shazam, he's being a real jerk!)

Mark Waid is the Woody Allen of American comics, hope he never has to find himself having to learn how to flip burgers. Torturous interference with a fellow comic creator, spent thousands on lawyer fees, this after causing pain and suffering for others that have had the misfortune to work with him. Kept out of DC Comics for about a decade for his Spoiled Manchild behavior. Latest insulted a on public forum Jason Pearson, creator of Body Bags, a man that struggled with mental health issues, yet created such great comics. Mark can write some fun comics, yet he should not receive much praise, the man is no hero, just a creep in disguise.
Lame I like his name being Shazam, ... The name change I can put up with, but going back to the cheesy costume.

Waid has done some dumb shit, but the dude is talented writer, worlds finest has been a blast and his Shazam looks fun as hell.
