Something you didn't mention but I loved was the reveal by Aslan that Reepicheep and the other talking mice are actually direct descendants of the mice that chewed off the ropes binding Aslan after the White Witch killed him in the first book, and that they gained the ability to talk BECAUSE of that act. I think where they were going with Susan is similar to what they did with Peter: like her brother, she grew into a woman in Narnia. She was known as a desirable queen with numerous suitors. She spent years being courted by grown men who had their shit together. Then suddenly she was a little girl again being hit on by little boys who could barely talk straight. Susan already had a difficult time relating with her peers before Narnia. Afterward, it was made so much worse. Caspian would have been appealing to her compared to normal boys. Accepting her reality is part of her arc. She says as much to Lucy when asked whether she’s pleased to be back “I was just getting used to not being in Narnia.” And her further comments imply that she’s afraid to settle in because she hasn’t any idea how long it’ll last this time. So I think the film makers were trying to further explore how disruptive their Narnian adventure had actually been. Especially on the oldest children. Likely why Aslan told them it was their last trip.

@@donatodiniccolodibettobardi842 I think the point, as seen in other children's stories, is that the more we grow up the harder it is to accept the whimsical fantasy of places like Narnia as "logic" clouds our ability (for most of us anyway) to imagine. If I may point to the Bible, Jesus does say that we should come to God like a child, open to believing and accepting without cynicism. As a Christian allegory/inspired story and in usual kids story fashion that could be why Peter and Susan are deemed too old by the end.

I'm pretty sure Peter and Susan being "too old" to come back was an allegory for the time. Back when these books were written, it was looked down upon to be into fairytales, roleplaying, fantasy, etc if you were older than 13(?) and not a "grandparent" (basically under 60)
c.S Lewis actually mentions this in a dedication thing to his goddaughter (niece? Granddaughter?) Lucy, stating she had grown too old to enjoy the story he'd written, but hoped she would read it again when she became "old enough" for fairytales again.
Kind of a "coming of age" thing for the time.

I actually thought that casting an older Caspian was a clever choice. I mean, Peter is struggling with knowing he was an adult *and* a king, and now he's just a teenager. For him, Caspian is the inexperienced one and so he doesn't trust in his decisions and fights with him all the time.
Meanwhile, Caspian sees these supposed kings and queens as just teens and so doesn't fully trust them himself.

Even though in my country the age of consent is 15 - so I'm not prudish about teenagers being sexually active - I still think it should be only btween people who are close to each other in age, not a full adult and a teenager. There's a huge difference between a 16/20 relationship and a 16/40. O_O
As for the "changing the body" part, that's just a requirement for actors and actresses in general. Sometimes they need to gain muscles, somethimes they need to gain fat, and sometimes they need to starve themselves. Just yesterday, I watched "Dallas Buyers Club" and I'm still kinda shook about how skeletal both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto looked.

(Obviously I have no power there, personally, so my support helps no one but you know) We applaud the drastic ways people change their bodies for a role, and it is impressive, but it's also dangerous in a way that feels not worth it. Starving and dehydrating yourself so your muscle definition or your ribcage shows up on camera or whatever the role calls for, it's just as bad to me as pop idols who forgo sleep until they pass out from exhaustion on stage and do drugs just to stay awake. I'd rather actors with muscles less rippling and actresses with bigger waistlines and pop stars hitting fewer cities on tour than any of these people accidentally ending up dead or permanently disabled for it, you know? The shorter version: I think it's taken too far.
but yeeahhhh more to to Twilight specific point, it was already weird that these 40-year-old moms were into what we all assumed was a 20-year-old playing a teenager. Then you find out he was a teenager playing a teenager, and suddenly it's police sirens in my brain. And that being what the movie was AIMING for, thus intentionally putting a teen boy in this super sexualized weird position, is gross and irresponsible. P.S. what country are you from?

I immediately thought of how frustrating it would be to see all the ways the adults in my religious high school were harming kids in the name of God. I got the impression his uncle was on the throne so they wait till Kaspian gets to the "appropriate age" to be the king but that was of course just a cover up for Miraz who waited till he has a legitimate heir to just kill off his nephew. It also brought interesting dynamic cause then Peter would be around Kaspian's age and they saw each other as sort of a "rivals".

I feel like the whole weird "Aslan party sequence" in the book kinda makes more sense if you know more about C.S. Lewis as a person. First of all, when he was young he went to a horrible school where he was bullied a lot, so I think the sequence where Aslan turns a bunch of schoolboys into pigs was his way of getting literary revenge. (He does this sort of thing again in "The Silver Chair.") Second, in addition to being a big Jesus fan, he was also a HUGE fan of Greek & Norse mythology, which is why Bacchus just randomly shows up for Aslan's party. And yes, that does make about as much sense as Father Christmas's appearance in the first book. Personally, I don't think the idea of Lion Jesus turning a bunch of nasty schoolboys into pigs is, uh... _great._ But I must admit, the idea of Lion Jesus having a crazy party with Bacchus sounds freaking awesome. Do those things really add anything to the story, or even make the slightest bit of narrative sense? Not really, but who cares? Lewis basically just did whatever the hell he felt like, and y'know, you kinda got to respect that.

@@Dachusblot Yes, that is true. But on the other hand, Rabadash had already been thoroughly defeated and humiliated by that point, and his dad stated outright that he was on his own when it came to invading Narnia, so no backup would be coming from him. So it's not like he was much of a threat anymore, and was basically reduced to throwing temper tantrums by the time the donkey transmogrification set in. In fact, when this plan was originally being pitched to the Tisroc, it was even agreed that if things went wrong they could blame his actions on "the impetuosity of youth".
So if his excuse for invading Narnia and trying to kidnap one of its queens was essentially "boys will be boys", I suppose it's only fair that he be punished in the same manner that bratty schoolboys have been known to be at this point in the series. (Sure this book takes place before Prince Caspian chronologically, but it was written after it, so the Telmarine schoolboys being turned into pigs would've been a precedent).

I'd love to read a story about that one dude who went through Aslan's portal. Well, a story that doesn't end up with him institutionalized.

The two-dimensional blank slate characters are great for a kids book. You hit the nail on the head when you talk about the kids reading the stories being able to put themselves in the place of the characters in the book. Young children are in a lot of ways two-dimensional, making the characters complex is necessary for an adult book, but definitely detracts from a children's book.

*Reepicheep* is a pretty damn awesome character & one of the more memorable parts of the series.
I look forward to the prequel book ( *The Magician's Nephew* ), where the mysteriously origin of the incongruous *_Iron Lamp-post_* ( which shows up as an incomprehensibly working prop in both *The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe,* and *Prince Caspian* ) gets explained. The casting choices could be pretty interesting.

I have to admit I actually quite liked the spanish aesthetic to the armour. It really drove home just how apocalyptic and genocidal the Telmarine Conquest of Narnia was. Before they were brought out of hiding, Narnians were believed to be *extinct*. It also adds quite a nice arc to Caspian's inferiority to Peter. Here are the legendary heroes. The true Kings and Queens of Narnia. By the end, he's fully expecting to lose the throne to Peter and Susan. He's an outsider. An invader. It makes Aslan's later affirmation that he is as much a King as Aslan's Chosen 4, a much different look, leaving him the unenviable task of uniting Narnia's peoples.

To me making the movie darker actually makes sense for the narrative, considering after 1000 years there's supposed to be less magic and whimsy in Narnia. Every since the telmarines showed up Narnia itself has lost its magic. There are no talking animals, etc. So it makes sense that the movie has a darker, grittier tone.
