I have the full kit and kaboodle Icon setup like you except I don’t have the top boxes. I also have a Snap-on heritage series box. The ICON is the higher quality box in my opinion. It has supports under the drawers and more beef overall. The snapon drawers glide better but their load rating is lower so that might have something to do with it. The icon box is phenomenal and I would buy another if I had room for it. Every time I go to the big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, I open the boxes and tap the drawers and there’s no comparison. The weight specs don’t lie either. The icon is like 2x the weight of the big boxers. I’m confident the icon drawers will resist long term sagging 10x better than the others and it’s a joy to use every time I open it up. I’m so glad I didn’t buy the Milwaukee.

That box is not only awesome, but a “smart” choice. Buying an expensive toolbox doesn’t make anybody money except the people who sold it. I’ll never, NEVER understand the logic of mechanics (especially young guys) spending the price of a car on a bunch of shelves and drawers. Even the price of Snap On tools is just ridiculous - but some guys swear they “need” them. I just don’t get it. You may not think it, but videos like this are important to help change that mindset for the next generation. Kids get jobs changing oil and immediately get pressured and brainwashed by older guys saying “they arent real mechanics” unless they buy a Snap On box - cause thats what happened to those guys. Tech schools and Snap On prey on young kids taking out student loans in an effort to preserve that way of thinking.
I agree that Snap On and other tool truck boxes are out of hand expensive. But teaching the upcoming generations to buy cheap is teaching them to support China. We need to instill in the young kids that buying American is a win/win deal. When you buy American, you’re supporting American jobs and companies. And 9 times out of 10, you’re getting a much better product. I buy simple stuff from HF when I need it: consumables, such as sandpaper or little $20 tools that I might only use once a year. But when I’m making a major purchase on a machine or tools, welding equipment, etc, I try my best to buy American, or German or Italian or even Taiwanese made equipment. Anything is better than China. I realize not everybody can afford American made tools and equipment. But I believe we should teach our youth that spending more money now will save you money in the long run. You’re better off buying used American made equipment than buying brand new Chinese equipment. And, if you’re going to buy Chinese tools, better off buying them used. That way, you’re getting a cheap price, but you’re not supporting China (as much). Also: the resale value on Chinese toolboxes and other tools isn’t near as good, percentage wise, as American stuff.
@@zenlandzipline i agree - but charity starts at home first. I’m not gonna support someone spending (MUCH) more money just to make a point, when doing that involves putting yourself into debt or not getting extra value for the dollar you spent. Support for American jobs, American companies, and American made products needs to start in Washington DC FIRST. “If you (let them) build it, they will come”. Todays reality is a person can earn themselves and their family the same income with buying gearwrench compared to Snap On. For American companies to succeed Washington needs to make them a priority before the consumer does, and if Channellock can still make and sell American made pliers at an affordable and competitive price point, theres no reason why Snap On couldn’t either. IF they wanted to. Snap On has gotten too big for its own good, which is why their products needs to sell for 5-10x price. Theres no reason why a person should have to pay crazy margins when buying the same tool online, to support the tool trucks and warranty services that will never be made available to them. Likewise - there’s NO reason why a person should need to spend double the price on a hammer, simply because Snap On took someone else’s hammer and slapped their logo on it.
@@kctyphoon I agree with everything you said. Snap On is out of hand. And if they don’t correct themselves with their pricing, it’s going to hurt them bad. I think there is something we need to consider though: Buying Snap On or Mac or Matco is an investment. Yes, the toolbox will depreciate, but you can still put a used Snap On box up for sale and get more than half of what you paid for it, even if it’s 10-15 years old. So, think of it like this: you pay $10,000 for a Snap On box (I know, it’s frickin ridiculous) and you use it to make a living for 8-10 years. Then you decide to get out of the mechanic business. You can sell that box for $5000-$6000 (if you didn’t totally abuse it). So, really, you paid $5000 and had a nice box with all of the prestige and respect that comes with it, for 10 years. Even if you only get $4000 for it, it’s still not $10,000. FWIW, I’m not a mechanic, and I’ve never bought a Snap On box. I’m a welder. I do own a Matco rolling cart/box that I paid $150 for. Sometimes you find great deals. I just don’t believe the resale value on that Icon box is going to be very high, unless he sells it before it starts breaking down and getting beat up. But his box is a a home box, probably won’t get beat up like it would at a real garage. Either way…we should buy American whenever we can afford it. And contrary to what you said about “it all starts in DC”, I think it starts with the consumer and the overall mentality of the citizens of the country. (Yes, I know, DC has a large bearing on the psyche of the country, but we citizens can take it upon ourselves to do what is right.)
Buy American keep chinese $hit on the docks piling up in their country and ours usa japan European for tools some Taiwan stuff is descent but still fails enough

100% 👌😂
Nice tool box.
Just subscribed to your channel.
Take care, Ed.
Thanks Ed!!!
Only guys that would disagree don’t own one…. Yet
@@rosinsautofab1956 It's a relatively new product and reputations take time to build. I've got to imagine their share of the market is growing. I think the resale value will get stronger too once people really start to understand what this thing is.
They dropped the price dramatically. I basically got 2 for 1. Honestly they’re more of a luxury but I’m glad I got em. I installed shop lights on the doors. It’s nice.
Looks like a nice setup. My dad has a Snap-on 72, 56 top. It's awesome, would love to have their stuff but makes sense to put that money into a project.
I've got 2 US General 56s top and bottoms. They're pretty good, have had them for about a decade. Only 1 drawer lock broke. Would be nice to have the extra depth. I was looking at the extreme tools some years ago...
Like how you can change your drawers and order new ones.
Definitely makes sense to save on boxes. Mine are filled with snap on, matco, craftsman, quality stuff for the most part where it counts.
I don't think I'll ever buy any test equipment feom Harbor Freight again though (compression, fuel pressure, leak down, specialty stuff) have had problems there.
Like your shop, new to the channel. I dig it 👍
Thanks man, you can purchase drawers for the icon box if you want more of one size, I run a home business out of my shop and it gets used everyday, been holding up great so far and I feel like it will last a lifetime, I agree on the selective tool purchasing from hf, guys like us know what’s good and where to spend the money on tools for sure!
How can you buy the drawers
I was just typing to say test fit the bolts and anti seize them but you beat me to it. 😂
They went in fine but I think the powder coat got in the holes and gauled up the soft grade 5 bolts 🥲
@@rosinsautofab1956 Rated grade 5, but like everything else from China, way overrated. More like grade 2 bolts... Every single thing I have put together from China in the last SEVERAL years the bolts have been complete TRASH. Many times I found myself going to Lowes to buy replacements that were much higher quality. This is why it is "almost" worth it to buy a Snap-On or Matco box. US made, and US Quality. I use HF for one thing and one thing only - I need a particular tool RIGHT NOW and cannot wait - I'll grab it at HF. I will eventually replace it with a Snap-On, Wright, Proto, etc - American Quality replacement.
100% agree, I have a full set of snap/proto/mac…. Etc at work and a mixed bag in my personal shop, I don’t discriminate on any of it, guys that have been doing it long enough know where a guy can get away with chinesium and when he can’t 👌
@@puterg0dthe modern Snap-On oval head ratchet wrenches are absolute junk; I stripped out the gears using just two hands, no cheater involved. I said F this and grabbed my $30 anodized Pittsburg ratchet wrench set that I bought as a gag, said 13mm cheapie held up.
Note that I warrantied my 13mm Snap-On ratchet, it's replacement also shattered its gears, again using just my two hands. Sad because the teardrop wrenches from 30 years ago I bought new were fabulous and worth the $$
I wish this existed when I started out!!!! I would have went with this exact setup. you paid THOUSANDS LESS for this entire wall if ICON than I did for just my 84” Epiq. Wish these were around then but now it’s just not worth the hassle of selling, ordering, waiting, setting up, transferring everything…. Yes Snap-On is a better quality box, NO it’s not worth the cost difference. If you’re starting out then ICON ALL DAY BABY!!!
Well said and I had a snap on and it was worth the transition👌 going in 2 years of every day abuse and zero issues with quality
I’m getting excited! Thank you for making all the videos about your toolbox. If I can find a buyer for mine, I’m going this exact same route with the same set up and same color!
Really epic toolbox is something you pass down to kids , harbor freight icon will never last that long. Just moving it loaded , let's say to a different job , puts enormous stress on the frame, will not last

Glad to see you're still liking it! Obviously like you said the home thing is your side gig, just curious how much use its seen in the last year? What would you say, pretty much a side job everyday or a couple here couple there?
I use it everyday from about 9am to 1pm before heading to work. Most weekends as well. Used every day as we are a licensed business and have multiple fleet accounts. Thanks for watching
I mean i spent 1300 on a 40 inch full bank matco roll cart decent deal i hate the cheaper tool box slides (professional mechanic so i use the piss out of it) however icon and homestly us general has gotten pretty damned good
