Man Archons really were better in SC1, and I don’t mean just in terms of stats/composition, but their overall aesthetic was that much more badass. In SC1 they are this strange alien form that is almost cloaked in its energy radiance that also has control over a devastating lightning attack. And their sound design makes them feel like the incredibly powerful force that they should be, both in voice lines and their attack.
But in SC2, like the Protoss aesthetic as a whole, they went from this mysterious and incredibly powerful alien race to everything becoming shiny and almost round looking. The SC2 Archon shoots a sliver of lightning, has armor on now for some reason, and overall doesn’t have the presence the old Archon had.
overall SC2 estestics are meh... all units are squerish/rounded. Siege tanks are a square, Archons look like a flying suit of armor (and not even rly to much protos looking armor). Mutalists look like a caricature of a corgi with giant head (has short legs like a corgi). Just meh. In SC units in a race had their style fitting the whole race, and each race had quite different style/shape of units by default, not like in SC2 where everything is either square or rounded up (or both).

SC1 was a spacecowboy movie with mysterious and alien, alien races. SC2 is pretending to be babylon 5 lecturing us on the morals of society.
I been saying g the same thing...ehy give the burning effigy of protoss spirit..armour?????????? Tskes away from the lore..makes it more controlled..instead of this raging burning spirit of aggression and alien hulk like presence.
i dunno man but archon in BW was badass, sc2 sounds and looks like an archon from WISH

The archon was such a good unit in Starcraft original and brood war, they nerfed him a lot in SC2
Actually in sc2 ultra was buffed a lot, giving it extra 100 hit points as well as 15 more damage
But yes, the attack speed from archon got nerfed in sc2
@@pg8971 no, those were compensated for all the nerfs ultra got.
Remember armor types in SC2 is basically and indicators for all those extra damage you will be taking from.
Basically, Ultra has less hp from all those bonus vs armor dmg units SC2 have.

Where ultralisk has had major changes for sc2, archon has remained almost the same. And this is a mistake because sc2 is not sc1 in terms of reactivity and intelligence of the units. As a result, he has lost a lot of value and is almost useless to play in late game.
PS: let's not forget his fat ass which prevents him from placing himself well in battle.

Ultralisks are strong because of their armour; archons have one of the single highest attacks, so 3-3 against fully upgraded ultralisks they’re still doing 34 damage a hit, a small decrease in damage. A fully upgraded marine does 4 - more than a 50% decrease.
Little correction: It does 3. Base attack of the marine is 6. Ultra has a 1 armor default + 2 research upgrade along side the 3 comeing from the carapace upgrades, so at fully upgraded has 6 armor, and the marine 6+3.

i did a lot of 1 vs 1 archons vs Ultralisk, and 9 out of 10 times, the archon always wins, regardless of the upgrades. But once in a while, the path of one of the unites changes a bit, and the archon attacks half a second later and looses.
It was so close in last fight! Archon had 6 HP in final of fight. Archons stronger than ultralisks in every case. It is so interesting,

I think sc2 archons are fair. They lose to ultras but they have other advantages to make up for it
I'm old enough to remember that in the sc beta, archons had psi storm. Imagine how good they were
I wish SC2 (which are decent vs biological units) were better like their BW counterparts... granted these are different games due to how the interraction between each unit work, but still SC2 archons aren't as satisfying as the BW!
Word. Archons are more gas and lorewise two psionic warrior templars sacing their independence. They should destroy several big lizards
@@mgtowstanleyzoltanov9808 Indeed, lorewise an actual Archon should be more similar to the coop Artanis 3rd Prestige special One! They're supposed to be and ephimeral and volatile Energy entity capable of unleashing massive destructive waves , like seen in LotV intro cinematic! Not be Just gunned down by marines or dissolved by roaches......

Ultra's attack cooldown is random, so you'll have to spam right click to increase it's attack speed when you do 1 vs 1 attack. The results will be very different.
archon's also, just look at it slowdowns. Tbh every unit feels like that in SC (or maybe they have a prolonged pause after few attacks).
Just for Comparison:
Archon Dmg is 30 (+9), Ultralisk is 20 (+9).
Archon Armor is 0 (+3Shield), 0 (+3 armor), Ultralisk is 1 (+3 Armor) (+2 Upgrade)
Archon Cost is : 100M/300G, Ultralisk's cost is 200M/200G
But still Archons are just soo powerful ... Love that unit!
Yeah archons wreck in bw. Melee units into archon is certain death. It was weird and especially noticeable in the one on one that the ultra attack rate changes. It will melee twice or three times in a row...then delay a bit... Whereas the archon is consistant
Yet they are countered by trash hydras or cracklings

it actually scares me because I always thoug of ultralisks being better unit than archons.
I played for years and now here showed up my mistake.
But worse is that others really expected it so goodbye, I'll go crying about my incompetence
You're not wrong. Ultras are hands down better units. The issue has to do with how each handles small bite-sized damage. Ultras fare very well vs Marines and Hydras and their armor blocks more damage the more attacks made against the Ultras. Archons on the other hand, their shields have ZERO base reduction and receive full damage from Marines, Hydras, even Vultures! When you think that Large units would fare well vs. concussive. You have to believe in your experience! Not change your mind based on a some lame simulated battle.
As a zerg we hate archons
- Defiler don't affect it
- Shred mutas, lings, hidras, ultras
- Super easy to make
Only reason why they are balanced is that they cost 300 gas!! So they can't be mas produced
This definitely shows how absolutely useless Ultralisks were. I loved to play Zerg, but found that if I wanted close combat troops zerglings where overwhelmingly better for cost then Ultralisks.
SC2 archons are whisps compared to these chadly creatures
Ultralisks tank much better vs low damage armies (marines, zerglings, etc)
Archons do better on large scale battles because of their range and splash damage

Splash damage is just good against big targets. If Ultralisks had trample damage like in AoE however…

But how in the intro CG of Legacy of The Void, in reclaiming AIUR, an Archons has to sacrifice his own life in exchange of perishing an Ultralisk ( ua-cam.com/video/M_XwzBMTJaM/v-deo.html ) if in the real game play Archon has such superiority over Ultralisk

Because its a game vs Lore. Game makes it so that units are balanced so people can play against each other disregarding the lore to mage it balanced.

Blizzard should've, instead of nerfing something that worked too well...buff up things that underperformed. The best kind of balance is not nerfing one thing, but buffing everything else.

Archons weren't great in sc1, but they really ate shit in sc2.
Ultras were absolutely terrible with no redeeming qualities unless your opponents were still running tier one units for whatever reason in sc1. It's exactly the same for sc2
They can beat Ultra but against Terran, they suck shit. One Science Vessel's EMP and it's over. All of them are reduced to 10 hp and even a marine could kill it. Seriously, nerf Terran. They are so OP and cheat as hell.
What conclusion should we draw? Protoss are stronger than the Zerg. Period.
You don't draw any conclusions from these videos, they're just fun. None of these battles would actually happen in a game.

Is archon's splash damage large enough to hit more than 1 ultralisk?
am not sure, probably if he hits not in center, but for sure they have slight range advantage and can attack from 2nd row.
For the surrounds, what if the Archons were holding position?
Archons have ranged attack, so I think in that case they will just attack ultralisks even faster and surely win.

While being the most powerful ground unit, the caveat is it has only 10 hp. You'd be wary with using archons against a Terran player who has science vessels with researched EMP Shockwave. They'd be easily melted by marines after that
