- My Favorite Portable Electronic Music Gear Setup So Far!
Today I'm demonstrating why the Roland E-4 Voice Tweaker and Synthstrom Deluge are my favorite portable electronic music gear setup so far! The Deluge has firmly positioned itself as my favorite single piece of electronic music gear, however, I've really been hoping Synthstrom would bring autotune to the unit, as I'm no singer. Since the Roland E-4 is also completely battery powered, it's the perfect way to add vocal effects to the Deluge. On top of that, the Deluge's flexibility with MIDI and audio tracks takes the setup up to the next level! Enjoy the video :)

All links in this description are Amazon affiliate links, the gear is the same price to you, but I get a small kickback when you use these links! It's an easy way to support the channel at no extra cost!
What I love about your channel is how unpretentious you are. You know your stuff but you are very open and share your experience in an accessible way. Keep it up!
Thanks so much for the kind words, that means a lot!
I found your channel when I was deciding if I should get a Volca Keys. Now I have it and a great UA-camr to watch!
Thanks so much! How do you like the Keys?
@@FreeBeat It is my favorite thing to mess around with! I'm also getting a Roland e-4 soon so I'm hoping to see more of that on your channel before I get it. :)
Really cool video. Great job breaking down a fairly complex multi-unit integration with an easy to understand practical use case.
Thank you! Glad it was somewhat followable lol.
Great setup. The Deluge just keeps surprising. One thing I’m not seeing demoed much on the E-4 is the looper function and scatter on the loops. I have a VT-4 and those 2 features are what make the E-4 stand above.
I really haven't used either of them haha. Loopers don't really appeal to me personally, but I have been meaning to check out the scatter effects. I'll probably do a video on the looper anyway as well lol. Thanks for watching!
That looks fun as heck! I was about to go buy an E4 when I remembered that I can do the same, and more, with my Roland SP-404 MK2 (but not as quickly). Thank you for the inspiration! 🙂
Never buy what you can already do! The 404 MK2 has all those lovely effects as well, I'm sure that will be a blast. Thanks for watching :)
Ha! Amazing! Long term Deluger here, but your channel is great, dude! Think I might need the E4 now...!! Haha
Thanks so much!
I wasn't a beats in the park guy, but after getting a deluge I do like playing around with it on the couch - my favorite setup is out the headphone jack into a korg mini kaoss pad mkII then into a bluetooth speaker. I even got a mini backpack that it all fits in. You create a quick beat on the deluge and then you can dial up some cool filters and DJ effects on the kaoss and have a blast ... all battery powered as well. I wish I could post a pic. Cheers
That sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks for watching :)
Great vid! You definitely have that vibe of, "you can do this too!" which is cool for us just getting used to how all this works together. I struggle with finding how everything hooks together properly; even manuals aren't 100% clear or understandable sometimes. Your vids take the guesswork out and I've gotten to hook up a lot more than I thought I could just by watching your videos. So, thanks! 🙏
(FYI, I think your Instagram link is broken)
Thanks so much! Thouroughly explaining cable routing has been something I've always wanted more explanations for in videos, so once I learned how things work I decided to always explain my connections. I'll take a look at the Instagram link, I don't really use it though haha. Thanks again :)
Very nice idea and resulkt. I mostly drool over the Deluge, but oh well the E-4 is fun too!
Now maybe put some Volca sounds through it?
Once my TS cables get here I definitely will! Thanks for watching :)
Hi :)
I've followed you for a while now and I love your style. I wonder if the Deluge could do vocal processing by itself? What kind of limitation would it have compared to the e-4? Maybe a good topic for a another video? Cheers! :)
The Deluge sadly doesn't have autotune, harmonies/polyphony, doubler effects, or even a vocoder :( I'm hoping they'll add some of those in the future though. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this very nice video man. Keep up the good job.
I appreciate it, thank you!
Nice as always! How do you do it? Everytime a surprize!
Btw, can you recommend Deluge as a first device for beginners?
A little context - I'm only looking for a non-DAW device because I'm too lazy to learn Logic Pro X or Ableton (I have both). Whatever I start creating, I quickly get stuck and confused! Like, to create a simple drum kit and a pattern that I hear in my head, it took me a week! It's so boring that I stopped using Logic for a few weeks just to take a break.
So I need a device, perhaps with fewer features to be ably learn it faster, so that I can create my ideas before they disappear.
The genre, if matters, synthwave & synthpop.
It really depends on how you feel about the sequencer grid. There are also a LOT of shortcuts, some that aren't even labeled, so it will require just as much time as a DAW to learn. I might check out the Circuit Tracks if I were in your shoes actually, it's a super capable piece of gear. Thanks for watching!
@@FreeBeat Thanks!
Another fun one, When you moved the melody down an octave, I was hearing both octaves, especially with Vocorder. I think this will make it sound really huge, octaves are such a powerful tool especially with vocals. Cute song, I like it
Yeah I noticed that too. It's got me curious to deep dive into the other wave types and see what else it can do.
This is so cool. I will try that out with my MPC One. Should work as well.
Maybe you can combine the volcas with the E4?
And btw the other Roland Groove boxes are great too. I have to try to do what you did in this video with the E4 and the J6 (the Synthesizer). That would be awesome if it works!
I bet you could do some really cool stuff with the E-4's looper combined with the J-6!
love it cant wait to try one
It's a lot of fun!
Entertainment and educational all in one 👍
Thanks for watching!
What are your thoughts on the new Op-1 Field vs. a Synthstrom Deluge?
I'm considering them primarily for producing high quality music ideas on the go.
Secondarily, I need a solid drum machine, and I don't love my Digitakt.
Thank you for your videos!
For the price, the Deluge is far more "worth it." I'd say a used original OP-1 in the $8-900 price range would be a better competitor for the Deluge than the OP-1 Field. 2,000 for not that many improvements is pretty upsetting. Thanks for watching!
What I’d love to see is if you can use this combination for a non cheesy full song.I wouldn’t know how to fit that into your channels format length as making it tasteful and composing some melodies and accompanying parts would take more time than 10 minutes. Maybe just record the process fully and then summarize it back to the right length in post. Don’t know if this is your thing - it is a lot of work - but hey you say you have *music* related content 😅. So it would be fun if you’d actually make a real song with this combination, you already demoed the midi sequencing of the vocoder before but what I truly need to know is, will it hold up if you try to make something with it.
I believe it definitely could. I've been wanting to do a video on making a full song on the Deluge for a while, just need to find the right way to do it. Thanks as always!
I feel like I could spend a whole day with that 'harmony' feature 😂
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
Something I like to do with vocoders in my DAW is to play drums into them to add rhythm to a synth sound. Perhaps you could play a drum machine into the E-4 and see how it responds?
Great idea, I'll do that once I get my hands on some TS cables. Thanks for watching!
I'd love to see how (if) the E4 be used as a effects unit on synths
I'm not so much into auto-tune since it takes away so much character of one's own voice. Vocal lessons are underrated ;) Pretty nice setup nonetheless. And after all, you wouldn't have to use the auto-tune but could just dial in some reverb and delay (which was the preferred method of masking not so perfect vocal performances before auto-tune was invented).
Thanks for watching!
Definitely gave me some Bo Burnham vibes
Wow, I'll take that! Thanks :)
The Deluge is quite a monster
Indeed!
Oh god, not that obnoxious song again 🤣.
Joking obvs. Great content as usual 👍🏿
Hahaha thanks so much!
Did you ever figure out if you’re Roland unit was faulty?
I posted an updated comment on that video :)
The e4 is outta stock on Amazon, you obviously promoted its amazing quality too heavily LOL
Hahaha I noticed that earlier today! I have sold a few of them through my links lol.
Video killed the Daft Punk star?
Hahaha thanks for watching!
Is your favourite music gear setup any different ? xD
Sort of haha, I'll have a video on that soon too!
Robot barbershop quartet. Go.
That is a fantastic idea!
Full size midi plugs are outdated.
I think there are a lot of folks who would disagree haha. Thanks for watching!
