I've been doing this for a while and it's really useful when flipping a part over. I'm surprised and puzzled they still haven't made it much simpler, almost as if they are hiding it away. I'm sure they are not but isn't this something most professionals will need to do? Feels like a blind spot on the part of the product managers.
My speculation is that they want this to be more robust. For instance, what if I put a part on multiple places on a fixture plate? That would break the workflow. It is frustrating. It isn’t a blind spot. They definitely are aware of the need.
I like the Op2 topic - More critical setup than from raw stock OP1. I have used the Stock model .stl method. I also do a cheat on standard stock for Op2 by making the Z bottom in setup a negative number = my model bottom depth form op 1 Then approximate Z + number on top - using the same over O/S on X/Y - that works for a quicky. I try to orient my Op 2 WCS to something on the model for precise alignment. Your cool part looks very interesting on how to workhold on Op2. Thks
Hi, I like it. I’ll give a try. Only diff would be locating the wcs on bottom surface. The first op machined surface. Eliminates any error due to stock mill dimension etc. Alistair
Ah, ok. Just a related note, and really not directly applicable to your vid. I find the second op, the flip and deck, to be easily screwed up. It’s the placing of the machined first op surface down on fixture, parallels, pallet, what ever, so susceptible to trapped chip, burr, or often distortion of the part due to careless clamping pressure. If your trying to get the part height in the plus minus .001” range, it’s quite amazing how the little errors add up. When I say trapped chip I mean specks of dust chips :-) and thin parts so easily bow in the vice, especially if removing the hat exposes pockets. Thanks again for the vids, Alistair
Thanks for the vid Kevin!!! I know we were doing this a couple of years ago and this seems to be a couple steps shorter than the last time I did it. Seems I had to save the stock in mm and also convert to a brep when importing. I tried to do the "continue machining" with the preview feature and found out about the multiple setups not working. It would be nice if given the option to select which previous setup you wanted to use. I have a setup for left part OP1 and then another for right part OP1. If I put the left part OP2 setup right below the OP1 setup, I can use the previous setup. I then need to put right part OP2 under right part OP1....which is where is shows up anyway. I just need to make sure that when I select setups to post, I make sure I get both OP1's. lol The biggest down side to the method you show is if changes are made to the first operation. It doesn't update the stl file. It has to be created and selected again. But.....outside of it being a bit inconvenient, it works awesome for second operations on parts!! :)
Yep. I think the lack of updating stock falls into the un-elegant thing I was talking about. This also doesn’t do a user much good if you move a part around in a fixture. So hopefully we’ll get more robust tools that solve both.
Currently i run the hobbyist version, is the STL mesh saving not allowed on that version? Guessing so and hope to purchase a subscription in the next few weeks. Use it more for my cnc router in the garage. Love the videos and help, thanks man
@@MechanicalAdvantage so after I select to simulate from the mfg tree it takes me into simulation but, at the top of the screen it shows tool> display> inspect and a check mark to exit simulation. I don’t have any options and doesn’t appear to be the same layout as yours. If I had way to attach a photo I’d show ya. I can shoot it a email or Facebook

However for me to save as a mesh I had to play it. Then right click on it go down to stock > then go to save stl. That was the only way I could get the option to save it with the removed stock.

There have been some updates. It’s now called save as mesh and then you can choose STL in the next step.

I think it is every time if your document unit is set to inch.
Fusion's been working so hard trying to get op1 working correctly they have not had much time to focus on the second side.

what if you have multi parts in the first op then second op you just want one single part from proceeding setup?
