  • In this video Matt takes a look at an early breech loader made by gunsmith Durs Egg, based on Giuseppe Crespi's action. We examine how the action worked, the weapon's unusual bayonet and some of the history behind the weapon.

    We're back with a new video, this time looking at something a little older! You can find out more about the history behind this early breech loader here: armourersbench.com/2017/08/13/crespi-breech-loading-carbine/

    Now that is what i call a bayonet! Reminds me very much of a roman pilum spear. Great video, keep up the good content. With kind regards, Vincent.

      Thanks Vincent, I can definitely see what you mean! Not sure how far you could throw this one though haha. - Matt

    Nicely done Matt! Does the closing of the breech handle effect any camming motion downwards on the breech?

    • @TheArmourersBench
      @TheArmourersBench  7 років тому +2

      britishmuzzleloaders Thanks Rob! No real camming action at all, so it's no surprise there was no gas seal. Sartoris, Prince and many others later tried to address the problem with camming and interrupted screw breeches etc. - Matt

    Very interesting
    I'm always asking myself why this Musket hasn't changed the loading mechanism way earlier. Until th 19th century, muzzle loading was state of the art since hundreds of year.
    Even though the Austrians already invented a better breech loading mechanism for faster fire rates, which are very important for winning battles

    I don't know if it's just me, but the audio was far more normalized this time around. Well done!
    What a fascinating carbine, especially the use of the usual area for a ramrod being repurposed for a bayonet!

      Thank you, that's good to know! Vic worked his magic and sorted out the audio issues. The bayonet is really something. - Matt

    Someone needs to make a sarissa bayonet next

    I watched your BESAL video and my first thought was that the audio was pretty poor... Much better in this one in terms of volume but still slightly 'crunchy'.... if you really want your channel to kick on I'd suggest looking into unidirectional microphones for more crisp audio. Also it might be worthy try a slightly more elevated camera angle to give a greater sense of dimension!
    I hope you appreciate I'm just trying to provide some constructive feedback.
    Other than that, solid work!! I look forward to seeing more of your videos

      Hi coolhand1983 thanks for the critique and yes we know the audio could be better. This is partly down to the location and room acoustics and partly down to equipment. As you may appreciate without sponsorship we have to fund equipment, travel, etc. ourselves and as such we are working with what we can afford! As for filming techniques, yes we are learning as we go and yes we need to film better and with more close ups. Hopefully our audience will bear with us as we mature and get better at what we do. Remember it's a labor of love and passion, hopefully we can take you on that journey with us! - Vic

    I'm no expert but that looks more like a spear than a bayonet

    I think that the only country that really got this type of action perfected as a service rifle were the Norwegians (and Swedes to a lesser extent) with their Kammerladers. Never had any leaks in mine and the underhammer is genius.

    • @TheArmourersBench
      @TheArmourersBench  7 років тому

      The Chap I think you're right, some valiant attempts made across Europe during the late C18th and early C19th but the Norwegians certainly managed to perfect their system to the point where it was actually viable! The American Hall is another interesting one. The Kammerlader is on my list to take a look at, have you guys done a video on it yet? - Matt

    • @thebotrchap
      @thebotrchap 7 років тому +1

      I sadly no longer have one, but that may change with time :-)

    • @TheArmourersBench
      @TheArmourersBench  7 років тому

      Hi The Chap, I have admired the Kammerlader action and have wanted to find a nice example for ages. In the UK it would be classed as an antique and obsolete caliber so no licence required to own it (unless you wanted to shoot it, isn't that an oxymoron)! - Vic

      Finding them in NO is easy, getting them out is hard since they have heritage protection laws. The best bet is Swedish auctions. They are great to fire but my goodness are they heavy!

      It may not have been for widespread issue, but France's M1831 fusil de rampart/wallgun and subsequent variations were extremely good breechloading percussion guns of an extremely similar type to the carbine made by Durs Egg. There were a few more steps to the action, such as a wedge that pushes the breechblock into a recess in the barrel, but overall the system was surprisingly similar.
      Durs Egg was mighty close to a functional, acceptable action, indeed!

    Incredibly interested gun! But a quick word of advice on the video itself. I'd prefer less cuts and more short "uhms" instead of you constantly cutting yourself off.

    Do these guns take faster to reload than a muzzle loaded gun? Do they take less maintenance? Do they break easily or are they more durable?

    • @TheArmourersBench
      @TheArmourersBench  6 років тому +2

      Their primary advantage is that they can be reloaded faster than a muzzle loading musket or carbine. As for durability, they do have more parts and more parts can often lead to issues but they aren't overly complex. - Matt

    great vid! i was wondering if in the u.k. you had the ability to carry a pistol and if you had the inclination what would you carry? thnx

    • @TheArmourersBench
      @TheArmourersBench  7 років тому +2

      chairman wow Thank you. Sadly, in the UK pistol ownership is prohibited and has been for the past 20 years or so. I've never owned or carried a pistol, I've handled and shot quite a few though so if I was able and wanted to, perhaps a Glock 19. I know Vic was lucky to own Pistols before the law change, so he might add his thoughts when he swings by the comments next! - Matt

    • @TheArmourersBench

      Hi Chairman wow, back in the 80's & 90's before pistol ownership was banned I used and owned several pistols. M1911A1,s a Colt Gold Cup, S&W 686, Model 18, Hi Standard Olympic, etc. My favorite though was a Beretta 92F and I was quite adept with it! I still occasionally shoot pistol when I visit the USA. Owning a firearm for self-protection was and is not allowed in the UK. Pistol ownership is not totally banned in the UK, black power pistols are still allowed and long barreled pistols with a barrel length of 12 inches or more and an overall length of not less than 60 cm (semi auto pistols are not allowed unless they are 22 Rimfire, fullbore revolvers are allowed as long as they meet the above spec.) - Vic

      The Armourer's Bench thanks for the info. and those are really nice pistols. i carry a g.i. spec m1911a1 which i know isn't very user friendly but i find it comfortable and suitable to me. did you have to get rid of your pistols after the ban or were you able to keep them after and just not own any future prohibited pistols?

      The Armourer's Bench prohibited for self defence in the U.K. apart from Northern Ireland, where it is permitted.

      We had to surrender all our pistols to the Police (we were compensated for their value somewhat, but not for loss of use!) unless they were black powder. There were a few exemptions but only for a very few bona fide collectors and then they cannot shoot them! - Vic
