I own CRF250L. Its a great bike in case you understand what is it's purpose. Its not a dirt bike, its an universal light motorcycle. For me CRF is perfect because it exactly does what I need. It takes me to the office and back, to the grocery stores, what ever. I travel with it for 300-400 kilometers without any problem, its very nice for holiday rides, no matter if its road or trail. And, of course, all of it is very cheap - CRF doesn't burn too much gas and does not require frequent maintenance.
I really hope this is the direction a lot of dual sports go. A little more road-friendly than most current dual sports with larger tanks and the nice rally wind screen, but still has that nice high clearance, tractor factor, and suspension that make it shine off road. I'd love to get a hold of one of these 250L rallys!

Lots of commentary regarding the 250L on the interwebs, some good, some bad. What I can't get past are reviews in a person's garage, your review while riding the bike where it was meant for was much more meaningful. Needing to keep in perspective what a stock 250cc bike can do, you did well while demonstrating it in the environment most of us considering the bike would attempt in turn. Thank you.
I got one of the first 250 Rally bikes in the state, and so far I'm very impressed with the bike, especially considering the price. I think your video captures the essence of the of the bike, and touches upon the only real weakness I've found with the bike, and that's the suspension. Great review!
This model is basically the non-rally CRF250L with all the upgrade people have been putting on their CRF250L. The thing I love most is they made it look less like a dirtbike, and a bit sexier.
Nice honest review. I have the Rally myself, found it to be a great bike. You have to be honest about its capabilities, it's not an enduro, it's a trial bike. Ride it with this in mind and it does a great job, it's fun and looks great. It's certainly not perfect, but very few bikes are, modding the bike is all part of the fun of ownership, of a motorcycle. Look forward to your follow up videos, will be interesting to hear about the various mods you do, to your bike.
I got the 2017 CRF250l a few months ago, and I agree, the brakes aren't the best, it's a little under powered, and somewhat heavy, but I've only been riding for a little over 6 months, so I don't need a monster of a bike. I'm really happy with the CRF250l.

i got a 2017 CRF250L , i feel very ok with it....i did a little more rear shock preload and it now it feels ok for me offroad.... the only thing i will change in summer is the rear sprocket to 45 or 48 for more low end torque offroad because gearing is more for street orientated
Some advantages and great styling over my CRF250L, the biggest bike Honda import here in the Philippines, and doesn't have the power or carrying capacity of my XL1000V in storage elsewhere, but would be a good all round reliable choice in many situations. Thanks for the test!
I have a 2017 CRF250L. It was in need of Improvement. 14/40 to a 13/42 gear change was the best thing I've done. Believe it or not I didn't loose any top end. Well its true. Gained a lot of low-end actually I can take off in 2nd if I want. I bought the speedo speedometer calibrator thing. The gear swap really let 6 gear do its job and not bog down. I've had a lot of street bikes and dirt bikes but this one is actually my favorite overall. Every kid has always wanted a dirt bike that can go off road and still be street legal it's awesome. Great video.
thanks for the video.....................I bought the 250 rally 3 days ago and I love it................But I find the seat height a little high for me................ the dealer put everything as low as it could go, I'm 5'10" and 260lbs.............been ridding street bikes for 31 years,.......................and own a few nice bike, one being a 2015 Yamaha fz09 with a seat height 0f around 31.5" and that's a great height for me.What can be done and bought to make the seat height as low as possible ground clearance is no big deal............ I sat on a 2017 Yamaha 250 street and trail at the dealer when buying the 250 rally and found the seat height to be perfect, but didn't like the butt ugliness of it.......................Please help, and let me know what parts to buy, and or what custom mods can be done to lower the 250 rally to the max.................I well also lower the front by letting the shocks come up more in the triple T...........
Yes, Yes and No, and don't forget the exhaust system, airbox mode and fuel controller, but customizing your bike is half the fun. Okay maybe like a quarter of the fun.
I find the little CRF gets nowhere near the advertised mpg, especially with the stage 1 mods. I might get 60-70 miles on a tank, riding highway with a full yoshi exhaust, EJK, airbox mod and a 13T cog. a bigger fuel tank would be lovely lol.
It cruises at 65 to 70 just fine, gets to 75 quickly but it doesn't feel like cruising any more, 80 absolute maximum. It feels the most peppy at 70, that's the best speed for climbing hills in 6th etc. I'm averaging 3.3 l/100km, 71 MPG US, 86 MPG UK mostly on hilly twisty but tarsealed NZ back roads.
@@unabashedindividualist6232 ... and if you don't modify it you get 160 miles range (at least I do), it's quiet, and probably has all of 3 HP less than yours. Honda knows what they're doing. If you want more power get a bigger bike. This thing is plenty fast for a 250 if you use 7000 to 8000 RPM and full throttle when necessary.
I always wondered why they stopped the XL 600 R and the 650 Dominators. I had a XL 600 R model 1984 and drove 130.000 km on 1 and the same engine without any problems. It had 44 horsepower and the weighth was 142 kg. The chassis was awesome, everything was reliable and stuurdy. Even during the harsh winters we have in Austria the XL didn't make any problems, and though there was no electric starter, you needed not more than 2 or 3 kicks in the cold to make it run. I miss that kind of bike. It was wonderful to travel with it: Fuel capacity 12 litres and not more than 3,2 for 100 km. Teneres were good too, but not equal in my opinion: Chassis worse, and their engine didn't last as long and needed more petrol.
Ok, what trails are you guys riding in Utah? I had a 2014 CRF250L - Seat Concepts, stock gearing, EJK, FMF Powercore header & Megabomb muffler, airbox mod, 1 inch Bar risers, skid plate, Dunlop d606, Barkbusters, Acerbis 3.1 fuel tank, Dirtrack panniers, and a rotopax fuel tank for each side, when going on those 250 mile trips in the Utah wasteland. The bike really was one of the "funniest" bikes I've ever owned for the Northern Utah mountainous rough high gravel areas where I would ride and really came alive after making the exhaust, airbox, and EJK mods. It would keep up with everyone in my group who rode dual sports and surpassed them in the rough technical areas (except for the KTM guys). The bike was better capable than my now DR650 for the terrain I enjoy riding in, but sold it for DR650, because I don't trailer my bike to the riding areas and needed something that could better handle the crazy Utah divers coming north to the southern areas on I-215 and I-15 who seemed all to be doing 85+ MPH.
Cool looking motorcycle. I really wanted this bike, but I got tired of waiting for my local dealer to get one in. I bought a DRZ 400S instead and couldn't be happier. I live the e tea CC's. That 250 sounds so gutless. I'll just make my DRZ look more rally-like.
Kinda cool looks like what's on BMW style but guess to each their own, I'd love to trade my Harley sportster for the 300 rally but I'd miss the cruiser for long stretches live in southern Colorado area
I have the rally 2020 model and I’m starting to like the sauce is Spenton I’m 200 pounds 510 it’s super comfortable on the street with the bumps I’m not entirely sure I want to tighten up the suspension because I like how it absorbs- can I get your thoughts on this
I'm looking at getting into dirt riding while using the bike in road some. Is this a good bike for a beginner dirt rider? I'm 6'3" and 275. Hopefully I'm not too big for this.
*Bredaxe* The CRF250L is a great entry level bike into the sport. It's a pretty light and nimble bike for those tighter trails. This bike performs well. Thanks for watching!
What about a rear sprocket with 1 more tooth - better lower speed pulling and acceleration - you lose 5 mph off the top end but it is like adding about 4 hp or so.
this would be perfect with the power of a dr650. come on honda! you ALMOST made the perfect touring bike. its super comfortable on the street surprisingly. actually the weight isnt even that bad! I mean it is a dual sport meant to explore so an extra weight is good for road use. I really hope they make this into like a 400cc or something on year. so frustrating to see such a perfect bike like this with no power
Ima guessing that the suspension is fine for lighter riders; that a few more ponies can be had by modifying the air box and jetting properly; breaking the engine in properly; aftermarket muffler to save weight and increase power a bit. It's something 25 year old me would have been thrilled to own.
One or Two more teeth on the rear sprocket - or One less tooth on the front will make it much better off road and hill climbing - you will lose some top speed but it is not a street racer anyway.
is the seat more comfortable than the wr250r. for top speed does it run out of gear or horse power. would an extra tooth on the front sprocket work for better highway ability.
It will pull to redline in 5th, which is about 80 mph. It'll also do 80 in 6th, at 8000 RPM, which is 1000 past max torque but 500 below max power. Dropping the gearing to do 80 mph at 8500 (e.g. 13 tooth on the front or 42 on the back) will make it do 80 a little easier (e.g. climb a hill at that speed, or into a slight headwind) and *might* let you get 85 out of it (at 9000 RPM) but it's not going to be comfortable. I think going to 15 on the front would still let it pull 70 or 75 mph in 6th on reasonably flat roads with little or no headwind, and make those speeds more relaxing, but it would take much less to force a downshift. It *might* even make 80 easier in both 5th and 6th -- and make 85 possible (for very short periods!) in 5th. Maybe worth a try :-)
This is a great bike, expecially for the price, but even with a smaller sprocket in the front it lacks power to properly get through wet dirt or mud. I had the CRF250L and sold it for that reason.
Weighs more than my street legal 650r. Hmmmm. I do like the looks and the electric start though. Gearing is similar to the old XR250R which is a great trail bike. Nice review.
How to lower the seat height? Any idea like changing the rear shock absorber to something with less travel and lowering the bolt position on the front shocks?
What a great trail, you guys dont know how lucky you are, here in Germany everything is restricted . Good Honda is street legal with 25 HP, most more sportive OR Bikes are limited to 9 or 10 HP due to emissions, just in pure OR they can use their true power.
Need have the option to have either the current 250 or a CB300F motor in it. Autos often give you more than one choice for an engine, why not a motorcycle.
CRF250L - foot pegs too far forward for standing....really bad standing position. Seat upgrade is a must as it's not comfy. Find you have to gear down alot in slow/steep technical stuff. However great bike that can surprise. Would love to know if the rally has a more comfy seat? Does anyone have any opinions on the power improvments between rally and standard L. Great video. Thanks!
I love my 250l rally. I've been riding it for about 3 mouth now an put over 4000. miles for road trip and off road. It would be great if you guys have some upgrades to offer for it.
You said its good for tall guys, is it better for tall people ergonomics in terms of footpeg to seat to handlebars then regular 250L, or are they the same with rally just being taller in terms of ground clearance and seat height? Im interested if rally has any higher and maybe further front handlebar, or lower footpeg, then 250L, better for standing? Or the same?
What’s your opinion of having the ABS on that I heard you have to stop the bike to turn it on or off which I think would be a pain- do you think it’s worth the added money I’ve never had a bike that had a BBS
Thinking of buying this as my first motorcycle. You mentioned in the video your weight and how that affects suspension. Do you feel it would be an issue for a guy 240 pounds?
I have been trying to find out how this bike would suit a beginning rider at 6’2” 250lbs. Commute around town 35-55mph, and an occasional trail ride. I have read reviews that the suspension may be too weak. Thoughts?
Will RMATV do an adventure build review, as i am keen to know what the bike would be like with fork and spring upgrade with luggage?. I am looking on a light weight ADV bike, coming from a 1100 GS and a XT660Z tenere, so what is needed with the CRFLR is the bikes capacity to perform on trails and long dirt roads all day.
My 2013 250 L is being delivered tomorrow and I can't wait to get her on some local trails. Is the Rally version that much better aside from the heigh difference and some newer styling ? Also, a local guy said on his review that fitting an FMF Q4 exhaust to his 250 L gave him around 5 BHP more, does that sound realistic to you guys as it would cost me around £400+ to buy one ? Love the reviews, really informative but jealous of the open space you guys have in the states !
Now that you've had the bike for half a year..... second thoughts? New vid on mods and must haves for the rally? I notice in the oil change vid that the rm machine has some enhancements. Thanks... enjoy the content!
Light your review a lot but there is one problem You were talking about the suspension about strengthening the Springs Don't forget to strengthen up the will bearings to That old saying is still true It's only a strong as its weakest link
For all the people that are throwing the bike down: the main purpose of this is being ridable with an A2 license, for the ones that have a full A license they have AfricaTwin and a CRF450 Rally edition so you, guys, are not the target for this bike. Maken it lighter would have been thrown off the P/W rateo limit for A2.
i bought a 2016 crf and a yahama wr250r both the same year .If I am going somewhere new and i am talking my time i like the honda seems like your are shifting less if i feel like going harder i will take the wr

the 250 rally would be a great bike, but Honda also just released their all new CRF450L too. It's basically the 450R dirtbike with a wide ratio transmission that is street legal, this bike is much more off-road capable than the 250L. We just did a first impressions on the 450L that will be up soon. Keep an eye out for it!

Nice video. I see the helmet move relative to the camera. Is it a GoPro on a shouldermount, and image stabilisation on the computer? Anyway, looks great! Sorry the nickle drops, it's helmet mounted but the helmet moves after stabilisation.
If you care more about comfort and speed on tarmac then get the Versys. If you care more about trails like in this video (and much worse!) while still being usable at the speed limit on the road then the CRF Rally is better. The Rally will go places the Versys would never dream of.

i got a 2017 CRF250L , i feel very ok with it....i did a little more rear shock preload and it now it feels ok for me offroad.... the only thing i will change in summer is the rear sprocket to 45 or 48 for more low end torque offroad because gearing is more for street orientated
I start off in 2nd on mine all the time on flat roads. I only use 1st for uphill starts or tight technical stuff offroad. Stock gearing.
Amazing video, that first hill with the fence was beautiful. Thanks for the vid
Thanks *Cameron Hicks* Glad you liked it. Very fun bike!
thanks for the video.....................I bought the 250 rally 3 days ago and I love it................But I find the seat height a little high for me................ the dealer put everything as low as it could go, I'm 5'10" and 260lbs.............been ridding street bikes for 31 years,.......................and own a few nice bike, one being a 2015 Yamaha fz09 with a seat height 0f around 31.5" and that's a great height for me.What can be done and bought to make the seat height as low as possible ground clearance is no big deal............ I sat on a 2017 Yamaha 250 street and trail at the dealer when buying the 250 rally and found the seat height to be perfect, but didn't like the butt ugliness of it.......................Please help, and let me know what parts to buy, and or what custom mods can be done to lower the 250 rally to the max.................I well also lower the front by letting the shocks come up more in the triple T...........
getting there!!!! thanks :)
Very nice! Been keeping my eye out for a bike like this, and this is a fantastic review! Cheers from Alaska!
Does it need a 300cc kit ?
Does it need a larger fuel tank ?
Does it cruise at 65-70 mph without ringing its neck ?
@@BruceHoult a lot of the fuel savings seem to be the fact that the bike runs pretty lean from the factory for emissions purposes.
Wish we had roads like that lucky guy
Love the headlight!!! Thanks for the video.
It does look rad! Thanks for watching. ~ *Vinny*
Howard Nicklin IV I recon the drz is the better choice mate by a long shot. Good choice bet your loving it 😁
You guys should do more ADV bike reviews!! Lovit!!
Awesome video 👍
The headlights are the goofiest looking set up ever!
Kinda cool looks like what's on BMW style but guess to each their own, I'd love to trade my Harley sportster for the 300 rally but I'd miss the cruiser for long stretches live in southern Colorado area
I have the rally 2020 model and I’m starting to like the sauce is Spenton I’m 200 pounds 510 it’s super comfortable on the street with the bumps I’m not entirely sure I want to tighten up the suspension because I like how it absorbs- can I get your thoughts on this
Man, if its comfortable for you I'd leave it! It's all about preference within safety limits.
How closely related are the engines on this and the cbr250 (Single Cylinder)
With a softer suspension, could you go with a heavier fork oil and stiffen it up?
I'm looking at getting into dirt riding while using the bike in road some. Is this a good bike for a beginner dirt rider? I'm 6'3" and 275. Hopefully I'm not too big for this.
*Bredaxe* The CRF250L is a great entry level bike into the sport. It's a pretty light and nimble bike for those tighter trails. This bike performs well. Thanks for watching!
I’m planning on selling my 250l and getting the rally soon
Thanks for the video. Where are you riding in this one?
jesus, what trail is that? its beautiful.
What about a rear sprocket with 1 more tooth - better lower speed pulling and acceleration - you lose 5 mph off the top end but it is like adding about 4 hp or so.
Hello, where is that ride if you dont mind me asking? thx
Honda bring back an up dated XR 650 r with EFI and E-start they would sell everyone made.
this would be perfect with the power of a dr650. come on honda! you ALMOST made the perfect touring bike. its super comfortable on the street surprisingly. actually the weight isnt even that bad!
Any new news and improvements for this model next year 2021?
Does Honda make something like that in a 400 or 450cc? I weigh 230 pounds, so probably need more power. Thanks!!
This is a great bike, expecially for the price, but even with a smaller sprocket in the front it lacks power to properly get through wet dirt or mud. I had the CRF250L and sold it for that reason.
Please tell me where this wonderland you are riding is?
How do you rate that next to the Kawasaki 250 KLX Enduro?
Weighs more than my street legal 650r. Hmmmm. I do like the looks and the electric start though. Gearing is similar to the old XR250R which is a great trail bike. Nice review.
Great video and could you do a review of the same model of 2020 rally and comment on the differences and improvements? Thanks and take care
How to lower the seat height? Any idea like changing the rear shock absorber to something with less travel and lowering the bolt position on the front shocks?
How does it handle 75-80mph interstate speeds?
For medium off-road riding do you think the rear shock Has to be replaced or should we just tighten the preload? I’m just under 200 pounds
It would be great if you guys have some upgrades to offer for it.
looking for upgrade already on a good bike?
I'm always looking for new toys for my toys
men don't grow up, just the toys getting more expencive
I got the stiffer Barnett clutch springs on my '13 CRF250L and it helped a ton.
1234jonesing how do you like it at interstate speeds?
Texas is a big state and I wonder if a 250 will cut it on long trips.
what's your impressions on the xt250. how would it compare to the basic crf250l?
You said its good for tall guys, is it better for tall people ergonomics in terms of footpeg to seat to handlebars then regular 250L, or are they the same with rally just being taller in terms of ground clearance and seat height? Im interested if rally has any higher and maybe further front handlebar, or lower footpeg, then 250L, better for standing? Or the same?
sweet ride..how about for a 5'4ft guy?..do you think i can tiptoe on the ground?
What’s your opinion of having the ABS on that I heard you have to stop the bike to turn it on or off which I think would be a pain- do you think it’s worth the added money I’ve never had a bike that had a BBS
Is the suspension on this Rally better than just the L?
On my 2nd CRF250L. Best bike I've ever had. Mountain bike with an engine. :)
Rally... meh. Too much fluff.
Still... Honda A+
Nice Review. 👍
I love mine too. I've never run into a trail or mountain that I can't conquer and I live in Dual-Sport heaven.
Did you have the originally L and now the Rally? What do you like better?
I'm sticking to buying a wr250r
There's no better dual sport on the market in my opinion. Love mine.
Hurry up, they're discontinued.
Rip Wr
no rip, i own 2 WR250X
jack schitt the wr250r dual sport has been discontinued for 2018
Great video and review. Thank you and convinced me of getting it. Where is this trail?
Thinking of buying this as my first motorcycle. You mentioned in the video your weight and how that affects suspension. Do you feel it would be an issue for a guy 240 pounds?
Hello from canada. Nice vidéo.
250cc
350lbs
Cmon Honda... basically the same weight as my 650l.
I have a 2003 KTM 640 ADV that tips the scales at 350 dry. Same response as you. Honda has 14 years to trim weight but didn't. Why?
keeping it cheap, the market for honda is new riders and most of us would buy a WR250R or KTM if the honda cost similar to either.
Is that number correct"
osimnod me too I have an 2003 KTM 640 ADV.
Service intervals? Is it real adventure intervals, or dirt bike intervals?
Good review, amazing scenery. Where are you? Would love to ride there.
I have been trying to find out how this bike would suit a beginning rider at 6’2” 250lbs. Commute around town 35-55mph, and an occasional trail ride. I have read reviews that the suspension may be too weak. Thoughts?
Perfect for u
Will RMATV do an adventure build review, as i am keen to know what the bike would be like with fork and spring upgrade with luggage?. I am looking on a light weight ADV bike, coming from a 1100 GS and a XT660Z tenere, so what is needed with the CRFLR is the bikes capacity to perform on trails and long dirt roads all day.
Great review thanks !
This would be great in a 350
whats wif the 250 ?
God that is some gorgeous terrain. Where were you riding?
This is up near Bear Lake on the border of Utah and Idaho.
Where are you riding?
*john miller* Northern Utah. Up by Bear Lake.
Thank you. Will have to get up that way
Great video. I really enjoyed it.
Where is the location by the way?
Importing a 250cc can cost extra $6000 here in Pakistan. Putting total cost to $12000 almost. I am almost done deciding buying 250rally in mid of 2019.. i am totally into offroad and want a bike which does not need much of maintenance. A very simple hardcore engine without any electronics jungle.. is it the bike i must have or crfL is even simpler ?? I like it because of its bigger rally look..looks more like a street bike but obviously can go nuts offroad too. Must mention tht i am also into touring. I also have option of getting cb500x for same price. But i dont think cb500x can handle kinda offroading i am into. Plus it ll be even expensive to manage.. right?? Guide me guys.
the 250 rally would be a great bike, but Honda also just released their all new CRF450L too. It's basically the 450R dirtbike with a wide ratio transmission that is street legal, this bike is much more off-road capable than the 250L. We just did a first impressions on the 450L that will be up soon. Keep an eye out for it!
@@rmatvmc yeah sure i ld be looking fwd to that upload but i fear importing a 450to pakistan will cost me more than $15000. Which is gonna be pretty too much for me hence i can only manage to consider crf250 and just wana be sure i am making best choice if its crf250l vs cb500x.
Love my 250 rally. Gotta get some better tires for off road.
Nice video. I see the helmet move relative to the camera. Is it a GoPro on a shouldermount, and image stabilisation on the computer? Anyway, looks great! Sorry the nickle drops, it's helmet mounted but the helmet moves after stabilisation.
What bike would you rather choose Kawasaki Versys 300 or Honda CRF 250?
If you care more about comfort and speed on tarmac then get the Versys. If you care more about trails like in this video (and much worse!) while still being usable at the speed limit on the road then the CRF Rally is better. The Rally will go places the Versys would never dream of.
I don't like the fuggly lights. Prefer my moded 250L. Good review.
Need a review for the BMW g310gs
Does the radiator come stock with a fan
Yes this bike does come with a radiator fan from the factory.
Pickin mine up today :) super excited
