I rode a CRF 250L a few years ago from Montana to Costa Rica. As anyone can probably guess, it was pretty awful in the states and Mexico. When I got to Guatemala, less highway, more cool little roads I started to really enjoy it. When I was doing little shakedown cruises in Montana before I left, it was a real pleasure putting around in the hills. When I actually hit the road with baggage, the already overloaded 250 was hardpressed to hit 65 under the best of conditions. I was wishing for something like the 1000 dollar XR 400 you mention at the beginning of the video. Not the bike's fault that I chose it. I was so used to using smaller bikes in Southeast Asia that I made a poor choice for the roadwork in the states. I wasn't expecting the bike to cruise at 70 but I was expecting it to perform a bit better. And gas mileage of a buzzing 250, no surprise because of the prior experience I mentioned, was painful as I was pulling over so often I rarely passed a motorcycle shop on my way to Washington* without the temptation of going in for a trade in.(yes it was a detour*) I think the 250 is a wonderful dual sport but if one is doing any distance on freeways, which can sometimes be unavoidable, I wouldn't recommend a 250. I know that can seem rather obvious but I travelled around on a YBR 125 in the Andes in Peru and had a load of fun. And I know that I never wished that I had a bigger bike there. (Well...maybe a 250 hihihi) Anyway, great footage! Nice work!

      @ThomasDercole2230 4 роки тому +2

ok i see what your saying, but to get a bike above 250cc with low maintenance intervals you are most likely stuck with a dual sport that still has a carb.

Soooo glad you are on this bike and not the 450L. I bought my 18 Rally new while a 450L was 15 ft away. For some reasons the 450L is better but as a total package, the Rally is tough to beat, especially if you are going to use it as a true dual sport everyday machine. And when tastefully modded it just keeps on getting better. Keep the vids coming!

Very cool small capacity DS bike. I had a CRF250L a few years ago for about 6 months before I traded in for an NC700X. I usually ride XR650L and XR400R. The only downside I found with the CRF 250L was the rear suspension which seems way undersprung for my 95kg all up weight. Easily fixable with an aftermarket rear shock or doing some work on the rear suspension.

Nice review Mark, it's another solid and excellent bike from Honda. It's so nice to ride on the trails ( I've ridden one) and great value for the money. I just hope that someone at Honda will one day reflect on the pedigree of the mighty XR650R and make a worthy successor!. Riding the 250 it felt so light...but when I take out my XR650R THAT feels light compared to most adventure bikes!. XR650R Rally (with electric start!) please Mr. Honda! Cheers, Steve

You should trust them. They're not bad quality but they make 65hp out of 450ccm. It is logical that the engine is much more stressed. The thing with 450 KTMs (and all other brands) is, you need to change the oil every 10-15 hours and to check valves regularly, that can be pain in the ass. Check out brapping kiwi on Instagram, he did 130000 kilometers with his 500EXC.
Under some strange coincidences, I bought my first KTM 20 days ago, it is 2012. 450EXC. I was planning to buy CRF Rally but then, this happened. It is much more expensive to travel with it but maaaan, 111 kilograms, superior suspension and brakes... We'll see what will it turn out to be, wish me luck :D

@@iamandreja the motor is too stressed, and the electronics sick, but yes they do really make good bikes! But you know that the honda is basicly indestructible and will run as long as you have fuel and change the oil about every 6000 kilometers. Bur yes, the ktms are superior in everything, except reliability, sturdyness, service and price. A drz400 with a rally kit is the best compromise I think.

Front springs are a complete disaster on this bike, you need to replace them. Racetech offers a damn good alternative for like 110 bucks. The rear shocks are even worse, they are horrible !!!!! If you just use it on the pavement to go to work, keep them, otherwise you need better and that will cost. I got Ohlins HO703 on mine, cost like 800 bucks but finally some good rear shocks when I go off-road in your type of terrain (with rocks). Handlebar is useless, you drop the bike once and it will be all twisted. Replace with some Renthal 50 bucks versions. Lose the handguard, worthless. Get some barkbusters or similar. I think I mentioned about the most essential things that you need to replace/add once getting this bike. Also, DO NOT MAKE THIS ALREADY HEAVY BIKE HEAVIER !!!! It is too heavy for a 250 cc, you will feel it uphill, so don't add side-guard protectors and crap like that. You can replace the battery with lithium to lose a bit of weight and the license plate holder thingy on the back you can go for a shorter version, perhaps you can replace exhaust with a FMF powerbomb (NOT MEGABOMB OR YOU LOSE HEAT SHIELD !!!!!!), I could reduce 20 lbs of weight that way but I put the original exhaust back on, the FMF just too loud and uncomfortable to ride that way. Leave the stock wheels, they are pretty good for on and off-road for what its worth. A better sprocket is also an idea, but then you need to recalibrate the speed, or buy digital speedometer calibrator crap or your indicated speed is off by like 10-15% ! But a better sprocket does make a pretty good difference and better riding experience.
    tl;dr: You need to replace:
    - Front springs
    - Handlebar
    - Rear shocks (if you go off-road).
    - Better handguard, the stock ones are worthless at best.
    Optional:
    - Shorter license plate holder (check legality, Honda officially makes them for like 50 bucks with the turn lights but not everywhere legal).
    - Lithium battery (to reduce weight on the already too heavy 250 cc engine)
    - FMF exhaust, you will get about 1-1.5 more HP and lose around 8 lbs of weight, but they are very loud and uncomfortable longer distances and illegal in most places for street use (at least in Europe) and then the question remains, is it worth the extra 900 bucks?
    - Better Sprocket
All else you do not need on this bike.
Enjoy it guys, like I have :)
WARNING: Turn ABS OFF when you go off-road if you got the ABS version.

i mean, maybe. my re himalayan cost like half of what this does and it handles trails(dirtbike/atv trails as that's all i have locally) pretty good. highway top speed is lacking though just like this, 135 max 110-120 is happy (kmh) those speeds are without tucking. i will say that i don't get the suspension you do but aftermarket upgrades aren't too pricey and the suspension it has does pretty good. handled jumps with ease.(7.8/7.0 inches, never bottomed it out yet).
edit: i just checked the p[rices again, theyre about the same. i could have sworn the rally was selling for 12k cad this summer but its down to about 7 now.

I disagree 💯% the headlights look so much better & probably work way better they are so freaking bright 🌞 + the extra plastics make it look hella cool fuel tank is a nice add-on plus it's metal rather than plastic if I'm not mistaken on the L. I'm not here to knock the L because I think it's a badass bike if you ride in the dirt more but if you ride on the street more like I do then the rally is a much better investment and I think worth it. I picked up a 2018 250 rally with 172 miles in this CRAZY market for $7,100 otd. At another big box dealership they wanted $7,300 for the 250L (non rally) with 680 miles! They had a brand new '21 300L rally & they said it was on consignment I asked them how much they said $8,800 otd I said I'll do it! They came back a couple minutes later & decided not to sell me the bike that the guy who put it on consignment did not want to sell it anymore I was like why did you even ask the guy that's why the bike is here is to sell it WTF! But the next day I found the 250 rally & saved basically 2K & I'm fine with getting a 250cc over the 300cc. To each his own, so whatever YOU would do that's your choice👍👍I thank all of these bikes are great Kawasaki 300 dual sport a used wr250r CRF250-300L rally whatever the hell you get just get out there on 2 wheels & have fun. If I had a trailer to take my little Yamaha Zuma 125cc I would love to ride that thing thru the trails just the paved dirt roads I think it would be a fun bike cuz I have the knobby tires on my Zuma 💯% fun 🛵💨
