Another great way to produce the smoke in the jar is to soak an old sock or strips of a cotton T-shirt in mineral oil (baby oil works just fine) and wrap it around an old soldering iron or I've found that the heating element from an old hair dryer works great as well. This produces tons of smoke without the risk of blowing ashes into the system. It's important to keep the air pressure low too, around 1-2 psi, or you risk creating a leak or damaging components. Lastly, a rubber glove over the throttle body is a quick and easy way to seal it off. Thanks for video and helping people save money by trying to find and fix problems on their own. I think no matter what one's experience level or knowledge is about these things, it's generally good to at least do a little bit of research and at least try to understand what might be happening, rather than just blindly handing the problem over to someone else; a lot of times people pay a lot of money for very simple problems. With all the information that's out there and easily available this day and age, it'd be a shame not to use it. Thank you for your contribution.
Can you do a quick video of you lighting the cardboard up and showing that part of the process? I'm not quite seeing how this is simply not lighting on fire thus only charring with great smoke but not actually burning other than the air to heat ratio perse. This is greatness!
Just make sure that the pressure doesn't go over 2 PSI because then then the pressure itself can cause a leak can cause a vacuum leak. However oh, thank you for making this video it's helped me alot
I have made the same yesterday, before found your video. I was little reluctant to light up fire in the jar cause it could break due to heat, but your video proves it wrong. I have exactly same air pump too. Will try my device soon. Thank you for posting this useful video.
You came up with a really good idea for creating and moving smoke, but if I were looking for an intake side leak I would want to include the duct between the air filter onward. The accordion section is notorious for splitting on some cars, and can cause havoc with the 02 sensors and air/fuel ratio
Great, simple, cost effective smoke machine. Thanks. Best vid. on UA-cam for making a smoke machine. Definitely liked it and have become a subscriber. This person explains straight to the point and no BS.
I found another video where the guy sprays water and uses a pump to fill the engine intakes with air. The car was not turned on. For me, that may be a good start. Then if it doesn't work, I will try this option. Leaks are often easy to find if you have hypersensitive ears. But I don't. I do know there is a vacuum leak just by the sound of it but can't tell where using the method of just listening for leaks.
Excellent video I have 1nrfe dvvti Low rpm lack of power need to press gas more and sound from exhaust gogogo No rough idle No codes No engine light No white smoke 39mpg atm Change spark plugs air filter cleaned throttle body inside out Any recommendations Its an electronic throttle body can drive 70mph at 3500rpm but lots of noise
Is it ok to run that kind of smoke through the motor? Is there a filter so ash and debris don't just blown into the motor? Just wondering cause this is the best and simplest smoke machine ever thanks
Excellent video thank you. Question, did you add anything fluid to the cardboard and if you didn't how long does it last smoking before you have to re-light the cardboard again?
I'm trying it later today! Thanks for the upload!! My cousins Charger was serviced at a shop and they messed things up badly. I'm thinking he has a vacuum leak.
A much more simple way to smoke test is to buy a cheap AC / DC air pump (normally for filling air mattresses). They come with different size nozzles. The input side you use a cigar, the output a piece of hose to a vacuum line. Turn the pump on and watch for where the smoke comes out and there you are. Cost like $10-12. Works perfectly and it is instant.
No issues at all. The smoke entering the engine at the intake doesn't affect sensors. The MAF is in the intake tube so it won't affect it if you block off the air intake at the throttle body.
The air pump produces too much pressure and may cause damage to gaskets and other parts. You don’t want to go more than 1 or 2 psi but you can’t measure with that.
A compressor yes, that would be way too much. The small air pump I was using was perfectly fine and was pumping out no more than a standard smoke tester would. It's not perfectly sealed so you are not getting pressurized air, more just air movement.
I just lit the top of the cardboard so it didnt burn it from the bottom. That kept it from lighting on fire. Make sure it's clean cardboard with no writing. If theres ink it will most likely catch fire instead of smolder
@@ezwa9979 nope, all I did was lit it up, then the air movement kept it from lighting on fire vs smoldering. Just don't use cardboard that has ink on it. There's not much to it.

Thanks for checking out the video! EGR stands for Exhaust gas recirculation. Basically it takes exhaust gases and recirculates it into the intake which will lower the NOx emissions out of the exhaust.
If the leak is large enough it can affect emissions, and your idle can be much higher than normal and/or cause the engine to stall. Both would trigger a CEL and let you know what the issue is. I had a 2003 Sable with the Duratec that had a split vacuum elbow which caused the engine to idle surge. It would go to 2500rpm then drop to 400 till eventually it would make the engine die. The small leak in my Torrent didn't affect the engine at all.
@@JrZCarZ just wanted to say thank you, i have been struggling with a 2187/2189 lean mixture bank 1 and 2. i found a small leak in the intake manifold and the MAF accordion hose wasnt tight enough. would that cause these codes?
There was no pressure set cause that was an el-cheapo tire inflator. If you are using an actual compressor, use the lowest setting that pushes out the smoke.
Definitely the best cheapest smoke machine I seen 💪🏽💪🏽 bout to build mines right now
I'm building mines right now lol as well..using a quart size paint can im un certain of size hose he used as I don't believe he mentioned that.

This is genius!
Looking forward to see if the replaced EGR solved you CEL and if you passed emissions inspection.
So far it's been 3 weeks and the CEL has not come back. No pending codes either. I haven't had a chance to take it to inspection but it'll pass. :)
