  • Hey there! Here's an honest school of motion review from an alumni :) I took the courses years ago but still remember them very well. This video is a general school of motion animation bootcamp review. I also talk about the character animation course.
    Let me know what you think about this review. Do you agree or disagree?

    Thanks so much for this. I've been thinking about saving up for a course, after newly discovering the world of motion design. It's kind of awaken my creative spirit (went to school for graphic design) that's been dead for like 10 years. Literally, the only great thing to come out of 2020. So yay. I LOVE ur channel by the way. Just discovered it in the last 3 days. Women talking about motion design on youtube or ANYWHERE on the internet is damn near non-existent and you are doing a great job. Thanks for inspiring me to give it a try.

    Thank you so much for this. I've been feeling stuck as an artist lately, and the only job that I've had as a graphic designer might be coming to an end soon due to company issues. I've been applying for jobs but nothing has worked yet due to lack of skills and experience, plus super low rates. I've been wanting to further my skills but I'm already in student loan debt from a BA that did absolutely nothing for me, so this would be perfect compared going back to a university.

    Thank you so much for this informative video. While I have a BA in animation that I received in 2011, I haven’t done any animation since, not to mention I wasn’t very good at it, but rather better at producing 😓 But I’ve always loved animation and stories, it’s what I’ve done since I was young. I tried for awhile to just make it as an illustrator in 2019 and I loved it but something felt lacking and I always said as a joke to friends that ‘I may have to do some animation soon!”
    Since the pandemic hit Last year I had to rethink what I really wanted to do, I was unhappy with my art and it was the beginning of this year, 2021 that I’ve made the decision to get back into animation and motion design. (I’m one of those people who love A.E 😊) I say all of this to say, thank you for your channel, it’s great to see other women in this space and I think I’ll be starting my new creative journey with School of Motion very soon. Keep up the great work 👍🏾💜

    Any online course will be way better then attending generic graphic design college, where you would only make flyers, banners and shit like that. Practice material that you saw in a tutorial, learn from mistakes, ask questions in a specific niche forum. And build a nice portfolio. That is a key here.

Within the last year or so I have been doing simple projects in After Effects (self taught). I feel l know the basics, but I am sure there is plenty I am missing. Do you recommend the After Effects Kickstart for someone like myself that had self taught the basics, or do you think I can skip that course? Now they have AE Kickstart so I would have taken that first if it was around then. Joey has created a great place to learn and has very talented people teaching. I have also taken C4D BaseCamp and it was excellent as well.
    As for lack of diversity??? What does that have to do with getting the best teachers? I liked your review until then but you lost me when you said that. I really enjoyed university and the school of motion course, they were both very different. Now university courses are much better than they used to be so you'll probably get all you need out of the university course. It really depends on what you want. However with Covid right now it will be difficult to go to class in different countries. you need a LOT of time for these courses. They have a new project every week and it is very daunting. I quickly realized i had selected a course way over my skill level and when i asked about changing courses they never responded. The TA will only review work so if you dont turn in work no one checks in to see how you are doing or help you get a strategy on how to move forward. With other student showing completed and polished work it quickly became defeating and made me stop watching the work - if you dont have time to devote to this then i would not invest in these courses. they have great content, but you have to have time to commit to them.

    Small comment as someone that works as a motion designer and occasionally hires other motion designers. I actually don't recommend putting SoM projects in your portfolio.
    It screams of student work. It tells me that you are incapable of design. It also tells me you don't have too much experience . If you want to make the most of SoM to get a portfolio, make sure to do personal projects. Hell, morph your school of motion assignments to your own project. The teachers might discourage you if you're in one of the animation bootcamps bc they want you to focus on timing. But me personally, I found major improvements by applying the skills to my own projects rather than relying on the course project files.
    I'm much more likely to hire someone that has no professional experience but knows how to apply skills they see in a tutorial in their own personal project, than someone that completed a course without professional experience, and didn't do anything personal. Most motion designers can recognize a school of motion course and there are too many portfolios with the same work now. A portfolio should also tell me something about YOU. What styles do you like to work in? What kind of motion design do you want to enter? What kind of humor do you have?

      this comment just comes off so pretentious im sorry. it's hard enough to come up with personal projects and people take this opportunity to make a good animation from what they're given in the courses, why not put it in? you still get to see them put their own spin on how they actually approached that assignment and got it done. stuff like this just makes people feel like they wasted their time and money on a course just to be gatekept from getting a first step into the door because someone saw "oh great another person who took school of motion courses."

      @mithrakrishnan2228 Рік тому

      @@thisninja11 I'm sorry i'm late to responding to this. I understand it feels pretentious but the truth is you got to do work that sticks out. I don't think school of motion is a waste of time but they are just exercises. And there a lot of reels out there that have the same school of motion work. So that's the hard truth. I'm not the only person that will compare reels and be more impressed with the reel with unique work (I know the work in the unique reel was done without hand holding and shows their problem solving skills). And I'll go further, if you're not a designer, and you feel like you're only an animator then there's a solution for you too. I recommend reaching out to some illustrators and asking if you can animate some of their work.

      @@CopyCatMotionDesign Their teaching mechanism is different from SOM, SOM has a batch system so they enroll limited students in each batch hence they can check their work & give them tips & tricks to improve their work. Where as MDS don't have any such system, one can buy any number of courses anytime so the number of students benefiting from their courses is quite large that's why they can't ask students to submit assignments & get feedback but they do have separate FB group for students where one can post his work & ask for feedback from his fellow students. They do have a active social media team so if you post your project on INSTA & tag them, most probably they will appreciate you.
      Their courses are qualitative & challenging but yes they don't have SOM like system but it is still good because they charge less & offer (summer & winter) sales. Courses like The Path to Mograph, so you can get a little peek of what the content is like however, there's no TAs for the free courses. They also offer a few scholarship options now so look out for those. Con, is that you have to have a Facebook account. Just wish there was another option other than Facebook for such a big amazing network community and a way to keep the classes private while taking.

      Yes these are probably things they added on recently. I took the courses years ago so you must be right, they have loads of freebies and even the payment plans I forgot to mention.
      I do see on facebook people mention they are only still on there for the SOM alumni group. A forum on their website would be great! Do you think that would replace the facebook group properly?

      Regarding the Facebook groups, it happened to be mentioned today that more and more people are seeing Facebook as a con, and interestingly Joey somewhat cryptically said they are researching it and other alternatives, Slack and Discord were mentioned by people commenting, but he didn't get that specific.

      I've never heard of full sail! It's good to gather info from different courses and sources but yes SoM will give you a great overview of everything you need to know and more

    Hola, no se de donde eres, pero veo que comentaste en español. Así que dejaré mi comentario también en español. Gracias por la info fue muy valiosa. En México estos cursos son tan caros como 4 meses de una universidad de paga. Yo tengo muchas ganas de tomar uno de estos cursos pero trabajo y me preocupa que se trate de un curso en el que necesite de tener todo mi tiempo libre. Agradeceré mucho tu respuesta.

      Hola! Si my familia es de Puerto Rico :) Estos cursos, especialmente el bootcamp necessita mucho tiempo y es mas fácil si no tienes tanto trabajo al lado. Yo tenía un trabajo "part time" entonces era más fácil.
      Creo que tienes que preparete para dos meses de trabajo más o menos intenso. Parece mucho pero vale la pena.

    Did you know graphic design prior to motion design?

    • @CopyCatMotionDesign
      @CopyCatMotionDesign  2 роки тому

      I did a little but not properly. I've learned a lot more in the past two years because I didn't have a proper foundation in graphic design. Why do you ask?

      Just wondering if the design bootcamp or kickstart was worth it or just to be self taught?

    • @CopyCatMotionDesign
      @CopyCatMotionDesign  2 роки тому

      @@TimandLauren there isn't any design work in animation bootcamp. I thought about doing design foundation but never got around to it. I'm sure it's great but if you want to self-teach the best thing is to practice designing, and not only for motion design. I thought logos might be easy to make and they're actually the hardest 😅 typography as well is so tricky to get right until you understand what works and how. I hope this makes sense?

    I agree with everything but apparently the color of ones skin is much more important to you than it is to someone who just wants to learn the program.

    I’m black and I study social justice!
    Diversity is stupid from your prospective.
    What if there is no teacher who s from a certain ethnic background?
    That’s not how diversity work.
    It’s all about who want to teach and get - it has nothing to do with gender or skin color.
    Aside from that, okay-ish review.
