Case Hardening Defect | Tablet Granulation Defect

Case Hardening is a tablet manufacturing defect which is observed during the wet granulation process.Many people relate it mistakenly to the tablet compression defect but it is not the defect of compression.It occurs during kneading step of wet granulation due to localized overwetting.When this wet mass containing large lumps is shifted to the FBD for drying,the rapid heat evaporate the solvent.A protective covering is formed which prevents the penetration of heat so granules remain wet from inside containing binder but outside is dried this defect is known as case hardening.Case hardening results in tablet sticking & picking during compression process.
