- A very cursory unboxing of my long awaited Merlin Model's 1/24 scale ATST from Empire Strikes Back - this kit has an all metal armature that is completely posable when built with the out shell being 3D printed resin parts. Some of the detail elements are turned aluminum. #scifimodels #empirestrikesback

Thank you for sharing. I got rip off of $2700.00. I tried to get my money back for two years, my wife got pissed and got me the phrozen mega 8K. Now I print my own kits. Can’t wait to see you build this one. Hope you’re going to light this one. Love your channel. Your awesome.
Was intrigued by these guys, after they popped up on Facebook many years back, so I went for a Cobb speeder from The Mandalorian (still in the stash!)
Thankfully in my case the kits were ready to ship and the contact with the guys was very good.
The quality of their parts is sublime, and I'm sure you'll enjoy building this as it looks very nice.
As you say the business of taking money up front is a bit pooh, bought a Moose model from Weta Workshop which was $400+ and they wanted nothing other than ticking a box for pre-order - pay when its ready, simple...
Well I've run out of videos, I'll have to back-track and see what builds of yours I have missed... Onwards
Hi Phil. Been a while certainly. But nice looking kit from what you showed us, I build part works, like your buddy Wayne, I wonder if any model companies who do part works by installment would be able to do these. I'm sure you're going to enjoy the build, you certainly had a long wait though my friend 😮
Christmas came early…..at last!
Who’s a lucky boy then?!
I can understand your frustration at waiting so long, especially as it only takes a swipe from Disney over licensing to put things in doubt.
There’s certainly some impressive engineering at play here and I look forward to the build next year.
Happy travels Phil and enjoy your trip to the UK if you’re braving Telford again.
Wow that was expensive! Look forward to seening the build!
Received mine as well and it's a fantastic looking kit! I built their AT-AT so I wasn't worried about the quality, but I agree the long waits can be frustrating. And definitely not a fan of having to follow along to build videos.
It shoud have come with printed instructions and a parts listing, so that you could check that all of the parts were there!
well this looks like fun. Get your "why did the Chicken Walker cross the road" jokes ready.
@@aztekdummy Lol...was it to get to the Dark Side! 😂
Looks like a nice kit. I would love to have it but My wife definitely wouldn't understand paying for a kit and keeping fingers crossed that at some point in the future it might show up. So I going to have to pick it up on eBay from a Window of a model builder who ran out of time.
So, the ATST I cooked up out of paper is 26 scale. Pretty stinking close. MY V-1 Is moveable but I have yet to cook up a way to lock the joints so I can stop motion directly. 17" tall, maybe a bit more with the legs fully extended. My time? Probably triple the cost of this booger. Materials. hundred bucks give or take. ANd... I have 2 built with a third half way. Gotta love a LASER...
In the second chamber, there is a part that looks very much like part of the block to a Ferrari flat-12 cylinder Formula One engine. Lifted from a 1/12th Tamiya kit most likely.
Maybe it's time for these kits to be produced in the US?? I know it's about costs etc, but surely if there's enough interest in said products then maybe that'll help keep costs down a little??
Cool Banana's 😶
I have the Merlin ATAT the quality is amazing and I have ordered the U Wing from them also, I look forward to seeing you build your ATST. Do you think you will light it?
No lights in this one.
Looks like a very good kit although not having instructions is not very professional.
Why did you choose the ESB and not the ROTJ version? I would have personally ordered the ROTJ as think it is more iconic.
I’m a big fan of ESB and had the pleasure of working with its director Irvin Kirschner on seaQuest DSV.
Safe travels
The size of that box/packaging is ridiculous when you compare it to the model size that you actually get. I wonder how much that added to the price
A very fair question. 🧐
I'm pretty sure none of their kits are 3D printed. They are cast in their "polystone" material. They used to have an explanation on their website but they keep changing it and I can't find it now.
You might be right and if I can confirm that I will correct this during the build. Having said that several of the parts I inspected are definitely 3D printed.
@@sprueVerse I based my comment on your description when I had just started watching. It does look like most of those parts are 3D printed. The blockade runner and McQuarrie X-wing I have from them are definitely cast material and not printed, but maybe because of the smaller surfaces on this model, or to keep the cost down somewhat (the big expense here is definitely the armature), they went with printed parts.
Makes sense. Appreciate the comment. Cheers!
Anyone who picks up a $1300 model (marked down to a mere thousand-- no doubt season discount!) doesn't *need* a checklist. They have people to do that sort of thing for them. Also people to put this little dainty together for them. Really, Phil-- your "old brain" needs a piece of paper in front of them... checklists and procedurals... not a spiffy how-to video for the young people! A young person, so agile and limber to be able to grasp at a glance what needs to be done.
Seriously-- your observation about their business plan seems quite right on. They seem to have spent all their time getting the production line coursing through mainland China. Nothing left over for the actual assembly-- thus nothing to photograph as a build guide. My hat's off to them for sheer chutzpah. One of the things that held me back was feeling the need to have an inventory, some kind of inventory and a fully illustrated instruction guide. Some say I go on and on (my wife first among many) but I say, one needs all the help one can get.
My guess is that they didn't *plan* on a two year production time-- the pandemic got them and China in trouble. But they did start off with a flawed concept-- let the people invest in us first... hmmm. Yes, Mr. Ponzi is grinning from beyond. But you, my fortunate friend, are still above the bottom level... !
Waited two years for the kit to show, ranted and raved to the kit makers, paid a mint for the kit and then puts it away to build AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE? You could be model builder.
Sorry I have to do another comment after finishing the video. What a terrible rip off, that is possibly a three or four hundred dollar kit wrapped up load of overly expensive unnecessary packaging and you don't even get instructions, what does a piece of paper cost.
Your comment is uninformed. About 50 vintage model kits donate the studio-accurate kit parts for one scratch build of this subject including multiple 1/12 Tamiya race cars that are $125-200 a pop. Then you need a machine shop to cnc all the aluminum armature components and anodize them. If you paid for all of this yourself, you'd be well into multiple thousands of dollars, easily 5K.
Not really uninformed I do know what I'm talking about. They only have to source these vintage kits once then they can just mold and cast them.
