John Lennon, by a couple thousand miles. He is my music god. He not only inspired 100x more artists than anyone else in all of music history, he inspired grunge - as he was doing it 30 years before the greatest grunge artists came to prominence in the 90's... who LOVED Lennon; Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, and many others/ too many to mention here.

Cilla Black worked at The Cavern Club, occasionally singing on stage and was originally managed by Brian Epstein, she was a long time friend of the Beatles. Paul's younger brother Mike and some of John Lennon's family on his half sister's side and George Harrison's son Dhani were at her funeral, amongst others including Jimmy Tarbuck, Cliff Richard and Paul O'Grady.
The Beatles first met Bowie in the late sixties, around the time of the Yellow Submarine cartoon's release.

Beautiful Boy.............Imagine..........Give Peace A Chance.....All you Need Is Love.............. I also love 'Stand By Me' as it was sung by John, written by Ben E. King. So many many more!! John Lennon was a modern prophet. The Beatles, like other leading groups of the 60s and 70's, honed their skills through thousands of hours of nightly performances. They were not just talented, they became brilliant. But they had to put in the work and the time to become that. They became masters, icons, individually and together. John separated himself from convention. He became a peacemaker. He married Yoko Ono. His music, words and personality had an impact, a legacy we need to carry forward individually, towards a better world.
Thank you WatchmojoUK for the research and putting it out there! RO

Every time I read where someone has typed "of" instead of "have", I get sad and angry at what is happening to the English language. I'm not sure if it's down to pure ignorance or just downright laziness, but it's sad to see it.

@@CB-xr1eg I'm as much of a grammar cop as the next sergeant (and maybe more so), but may I share with you something one of my Twitter followers noted to me? Simply this: not everyone had the educational, cultural, financial, or class advantages that you had. And if one didn't grow up with well-educated, articulate parents; if one didn't have a top-notch grade-school educational foundation; if one hasn't been surrounded one's whole life with models of rhetorical rectitude; then proper spelling & grammar are unlikely to be natural, unthinking, automatic habits. So maybe, just maybe, if you cut some of these folks a bit of slack, & paid a bit more attention to what they're saying, & less to the minutiae of how they're saying it, perhaps you'd find yourself a bit less stressed, mayhap even a bit happier -- and so might the people who read your comments? Just a thought. Cheers!

@@smartalek180 Let *me* share something with *you* I didn't get on at school, I hated the teachers and they hated me. I left with no qualifications, Therefore I have no advantages, educational or otherwise, except maybe the ability to write, read and spell the English language. I was reading from the age of 3 and I just have to look at a word to know if it's spelt correctly or incorrectly. I accept that this doesn't apply to everyone, but we are in an age where we are using computers and we have vast amounts of knowledge at our fingertips. We also have programs like spellcheck/autocorrect and Grammarly which will correct us if we spell something incorrectly, and also if we happen to type something that is incorrect grammarwise. Therefore I maintain that comments which contain poor spelling and bad grammar are posted by people who just don't care, or are too lazy too correct it. Occasionally I will type a word and it will be spelt wrongly due to a typo, my typing is not the best and I do make mistakes. I have Grammarly to show me if that occurs and I always correct it. I may be wrong in expecting others to do the same.

"I'm The Greatest" sung by Ringo * off his "Ringo" album was indeed written by John with help from George. In fact, the album as a whole was, at the time, considered the closest thing we had, after Abbey Road, as an extra Beatles album because all four members of the Beatles contributed in some way to it. "I'm in Love" was not originally written for The Fourmost. It was first given to Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Billy had problems trying to sing it and after a few takes gave up. Later John gave the song to The Fourmost. In the 1990s Ron Furmanek, a very talented sound engineer for EMI, was tasked with compiling a number of greatest hits compilations of various British Invasion artists. When he was copying from the original studio masters of Billy J. Kramer... in the EMI archives, he found the partial takes of "I'm in Love". By editing them together, he came up with a great sounding full version of the song which was released on that compilation album along with studio chatter. The chatter has John trying to encourage Billy to try another take of the song, Billy saying that he can't get it and George Martin interrupting the two of them telling them that if they want to argue with each other, he would book some studio time later for them to continue their argument. That track is worth buying the CD for if only for the talking that precedes the recording. It's also a really great recording of that song, much better than The Fourmost's version.

The Stones rendition of "I Wanna Be Your Man" was around November 1963 and they watched John & Paul construct the song close-by. By January 1964 Mick & Keith had written "That Girl Belongs to Yesterday", a January 1964 single by Gene Pitney
"Will You Be My Lover Tonight"/"It Should Be You", a January 1964 a single by George Bean. So it could be said that John & Paul were the primary influencers for Mick & Keith.

John Lennon and David Bowie wrote another song together besides "Fame": "Rock 'n' Roll with Me," which was on the "Diamond Dogs" LP and was actually released earlier than "Fame." But not many people realize it was a Lennon/Bowie collaboration because Lennon took his credit under the pseudonym "Peace." Also the Lennon version of "God Save Oz" was recorded first; for contractual reasons Lennon took his own vocal off the song and had Bill Elliott record it over the same backing track.

    Lots of nonsense here.
'It's For You' was written primarily by McCartney, with only minor arrangement suggestions from Lennon and George Martin in the studio.
'That Means A Lot' was also written almost exclusively by McCartney, and Lennon didn't "years later change his story, saying it was mostly Paul's", he attributed it completely to McCartney with no further comment in his early 1972 Hit Parader list. He described it in 1980 to Sheff using the "royal 'we'" as they often did, but never claimed it, and there is no evidence to back your claim that "it has Lennon's fingerprints all over it." Paul has always said it was mainly his song, that didn't work out so "I gave it to P J Proby".
'I Wanna Be Your Man', again, was primarily Paul. You sort of insinuate that this is wrong ("so the story goes") and that it was "actually John who finallised the track." In fact it was begun by Paul and finished off by both men together. "That was mainly Paul... I helped him finish it," Lennon told uis in 1972, confirming in 1980 that it “was a kind of lick Paul had…it was a throwaway."
You say "We're looking at big hits that were low-key penned by the Smart Beatle" - well, 30% of your list were *not* even penned by Lennon, and among the remainder those "big hits" are pretty scarce. Not great evidence for arguing that he was "the greatest songwriter of all time".

Well, I heard of Bowie's "Fame," and had no idea that Lennon co-wrote it, until now. Maybe it's the song that makes it memorable, not the writer (the only non-singing writer I know whose songs went stellar was Bernie Taupin, who wrote most of Elton John's early hits; and how many people know the famous singers who wrote some of The Monkees' biggest songs?). And including fellow Beatle, Ringo Starr, in the list is absurd.
