Since the second season of RE:ZERO is currently airing, I decided to finish an old piano arrangement project I have started years ago: STYX HELIX by Myth & Roid. It's a fairly unique song because of the extensive usage of Auto-tune of the singer's voice and the hypnotic bass patterns.
When listening to Styx Helix, I feel like I am floating in a deep ocean, trapped in an endless, surreal world. I tried to do a similar approach on the piano by introducing flowing hand movements to create a mysterious atmosphere, almost like the listener is floating on a stream of piano notes.
I had a hard time to decide which melody I should play for the chorus part on the piano in 1:05. If you listen closely to the original song, you will notice there is a constant additional voice in the background, singing along the main voice. I decided to sometimes play the "upper" melody, and sometimes the "lower" melody on the piano to make a good mix of both.
The music seemingly stops after the final chorus melody in 3:51, but it's immediately being revived again by the "play again" (F#-G#-C#) melody in 3:55. The music is starting from anew and it's building up towards a big finale until it reaches the climax with the ascending arpeggios in 4:20.
The original song has a fade-out ending which I haven't heard for a while in Anime songs. I decided to let the sound of the piano disappear into the thin air as well by playing in the highest register of the piano with a mysterious right hand pattern in 4:28. The final note was supposed to be a hypothetical C#8 key, but unfortunately this key doesn't exist on a grand piano (yet). I wonder if there is a piano somewhere in this world with a C#8 key though, so I can finally play the final note and make the piece complete.
Well then, that would be everything about this week's upload! Styx Helix started as a lyrical arrangement, but after I included the flowing movements in both hands, it sounds like an invisible clock is constantly ticking the whole time, giving this piece a certain rhythmic energy. I think it is actually quite fitting, considering the importance of "time" in the Re:Zero Anime.

@@Animenzzz Thank you so much for writing them, every piece is so much more engaging because of it. With them I'm able to understand how you interpret the song and it also helps a lot when I'm trying to cover one of your pieces (Ichiban no Takaramono at the moment :D) especially with articulation or the general feel of the piece.
I like enjoying the piece he plays while reading the description, that way I get a sense of what is behind these musically arranged patterns of notes.
And sometimes, about 50-60% of the uploads, I relisten the entire song afterwards again to be fully engulfed by the music.

With STYX HELIX, another piano song has been completed from my very long "piano arrangements I have dropped years ago, but I decided to give it another chance" - list! "Last Stardust", "Daisy" or the full version of "Guren no Yumiya" - they all were left behind in an unfinished state, because I was still lacking arranging experience back then. But with the weekly uploads since this January, I am really enjoying the process of arranging again and each time I learn something new to discover on the piano.
In case you are wondering: I have changed my profile picture as of yesterday. The old picture used to be a character from the Durarara!! Anime series, but I decided to create an own Avatar picture for my 10th UA-cam Anniversary.

@Wolf 2019 was actually a fantastic year for anime OPs, there's just too many good ones to list! The top 3 from last year I've seen from many people online seems to be _Gurenge_ (from Demon Slayer), _Kawaki_ _wo_ _Ameku_ (or "Crying for Rain" for its English title, from Domestic na Kanojo), and _Inferno_ (from Fire Force), but there are so many other good ones as well. For 2019 EDs, the best one would probably be LiSA's _Unlasting_ from SAO.

Honestly thats why Subaru is one of my favourite characters, he scared of death even though hes experienced it countless times and he musters courage to kil himself sometimes to save his friends. Honestly one of the MCs out there, idk why ppl hate him.

Ending the piece with your finger searching for C#8, just like searching for a particular someone who no longer exists in this timeline... Who is C#8?
Listening to this makes me feel like Subaru, stuck in a murky and uncertain ocean of time loops. The liberal use of pedaling and smooth scale runs creates a vibe of floating through said ocean. The use of a similar RH arpeggiated pattern on each repeated third hand melody (of which there are plenty more than usual) is reminiscent of living through the same melodies - the same events - but with something slightly different each time.
Other things I liked:
-The isolated run at 1:29, and again at 2:45, feels like traveling through time
-The resonating bass melody at 2:52
- It looks like your finger is searching for something at the end, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is

It’s one of my favorite series! Season two is bringing heat with both major plot set up and MC backstory/development (not sure what to classify it as tbh). Manga readers have been abuzz about the upcoming stuff in the new season too, so it’s gonna be great!

Ah I loved this ED back when Re:Zero aired! And I absolutely LOVE how layered this arrangement is, so many 3 hand techniques, it sounds fantastic!!
I think my favorite part of the entire arrangement is this specific scale (movement?) that starts at 0:38 and reappears a few times in different forms, in general the silences are filled SO well, the right hand arpeggios later on too! Plus I love the play again bit from 3:55, but I'm always a fan of these types of build ups!
I feel the lack of more upper register keys on a personal level though LOL my piano is an incredibly old model and has 85 keys - expecting to hit a key but hitting the wooden part of the piano instead is always startling

This arrangment is a good way to handle electronic style songs in general i think. A lot of electronic pieces suffer greatly when transcribed to piano, primarily i think because electronic development tends to use layers of sound and noise that simply cant be replicated on piano. but your arrangement here feels like it captures the emotion and 'wall of noise' effect in ways i havent heard before, so thanks for showing that off!

So it's time I see, the almighty Animenz is finally reaching another whole new level to find the world's first piano that has the highest C#8.
Personally I really love Styx Helix, the voices in this song is unique what with having several vocals mixing together. And as Animenz described, it does give a feeling like floating in the sea or surrounded by the ocean, which is quite soothing, and back in those days, this is quite a rare song to be found in animes.
It is absolutely mesmerizing how the song gets halfway through! Thank you for arranging this song.

It would be neat if one day we have a piano with up to G8 or A8. Past this, it'll be pretty hard for the human ear to distinguish pitch.

But some say that it is almost impossible to tune these Pianos...
@Yunis Grier wait but animenz plays that same brand of piano it maybe hard to see but he is playing a stuart and sons. Also where do they range from price wise for pianos with a c#8 or higher?
@@serpentinea.680 No he is playing a Steinway and Sons Model D which are produced in New York and Hamburg. These Pianos are chosen by about 97 percent of the concert Pianists all over the world. Price wise the range about from 70k-150k ore more... The Stuart and sons Pianos are made in a lower quantity and its difficult to say how much they are... probably a lot though...
You could very well have heard it (at least I thought I did) it's a phenomenon called an "over tone". With the right chord build you can hear a note above the noted being played.
This last note is so high the piano can't reach it.
Love the diary description, it's amazing to see the story behind every arrangement. I love the "originals" and "special" arrangements.. You are more a composer and author than somone that makes arrangements to my opinion. : )

Sometimes online you see instrument covers of songs, similar to this. Most take the instrumental and vocal melody, and back it with the bass in the original song.
You take it a step further. You do all those things, but you put a lot of thought into taking the feel, the soul of the original, which is greater than the sum of its parts. And your skill is so high you can basically do anything you want, but you don't kill songs with over playing either, you just have any tool you need to make your cover.
I absolutely love your work, thanks for taking the time to do these songs justice

Dang, this is such a unique arrangement, it’s pretty much a whole new piece by itself. The changes to the original while converting it to a piano arrangement is, in this case, an artistic choice rather than simply finding the closest note to the original song/vocal. Thank you for this, it’s probably one of my favorite anime song -> piano covers ever ❤️
