Tbf I think we're supposed to believe that the work dress is something that would be possible to have, and maybe even be handmade, by a girl of that time without many resources while the ball gown was made with literal "magic". So it makes sense that the work dress is much simpler
Beautiful! And don't be sad about the stripes in the petticoat fabric-historrically speaking it would make sense that fabric with dye errors would be used by working people, especially for undergarnments-cheaper to buy :)
I like this dress more than the ballgown and I can't wait to see it finished. Also, I'm low-key jealous of the smocking machines... I want one so bad lol.
Exactly what I was thinking! I think there's basically 4 yards of fabric gathered (pleated) into the waist? It's a good lesson for future projects that it's not necessarily all about floofy petticoats!
the fact that they're petticoats but look like they could be "outer" skirts of their own in a look/outfit XD i loved watching the process and can't wait for the next ones!!!! XD
I love Ella’s house dress/ maid dress and I feel after looking at it a bit clearly and closely (like pressig my face onto my iPad screen closely), it may either be an 1790s style dress (shortened and altered from an Italian style gown) or an 1840s dress which has been altered from an 1830s dress to have fitted sleeves and a square neckline a la Pompadour. I really have been waiting for someone to make this dress because its such an underrated dress since the Ballgown really stole the show. Good job on the petticoat and chemise! I now want to finally make this dress because you have inspired and motivated me to make this dress since its been on my bucket list for casual dresses to make for myself.
@@jenvo2891 it’s really just a matter of practice! My early hand sewing is… the absolute jankiest, but it gets so much better the more you do it. Also, don’t be afraid to mark exactly where your stitching line is with a pen or something, it helps so much!

I've never seen the life action Cinderella movie, but the more I watch your videos (so, basically, nonstop for the last year or so), the more I want to finally watch it! These are only the undergarments, but they already look so stunning! I don't know why, but I really, really love the look of those spinning, swooshing pettycoats!
I almost prefer this dress to the ball gown. Sure, the ball gown is breathtaking, but it only fits in a very narrow setting... This dress is more versatile, it's simpler but just as beautiful. And your version looks great so far! Can't wait to see it finished!
I'm sooo excited to see the main dress! I actually think it's almost even prettier than the ballgown just because it's so pastoral and flattering on Lily James. Can't wait!

This is gorgeous. I love how you did so much of it by hand. I have an Amanda Jane pleater. I don't know if you tried this but running a piece of wax paper through the pleater first makes it easier for the fabric to go through. I love this series you're doing on Cinderella.
I’ve been watching for your re-creation of this dress since I accidentally found your blog post for the costume study. :) I think you’re the only person I’ve come across who’s as obsessed with this dress as I am!! Which is why I’m grateful you’re as talented and knowledgeable as you are, because it’s a delight to watch my fantasy dress come to life outside of Hollywood. Can’t wait to see the rest!
I feel like you need to get an award for the Cinderella ball gown or a phd cause the amount of research you did and the final result your dress could have been in the movie.
I would LOVE to see you recreate the blue dress from Anastasia - the one she goes to the theatre in - I think this dress is absolutely beautiful, I’ve been in love with it ever since I was a little girl and I know that you making it would be amazing! ❤️
Thank you for this video! I have been wanting to make Cinderella’s work dress for a long time now and there were no sewing tutorial videos on UA-cam which really surprised me !
The petticoats have such a nice volume, I didn't imagine it was that fluffy but it's so cute! And the dyeing process is mesmerizing. Question: you said in your corset construction video that you were planning on tightlacing a bit, but I guess you aren't tightlacing for this project? Does the corset fit nicely even if you aren't? Anyway, can't wait to see the next steps! Good luck with it!
I'm actually slightly tight lacing with this dress as well. A corset is best lace the same way whenever it's worn because the fit will be affected! I have the same measurement with this dress as with the ballgown!
that smocking machine....I covet. your technique for the chemise is so simple and why didn't I think of it before. I think I am going to like this dress more than the ballgown.
This dress just makes me smile. Thank you for your work on re-creating it! This is the most pleasant and relaxing thing to watch. I see so many videos with negative content and yours just bring a ray of sunshine into people's lives.
I'm so excited for this project! I also had a thought for the printed flower pattern of the outer dress-I read somewhere that silk screening with fabric dye and sodium alginate is a way to print without adding stiffness to the fabric. Maybe something to experiment with!
This is so well done, and it looks honestly super easy, but I know that there was so much effort and time put into this, and all of your projects. Great job ❤️
Ahhhhh! So beautiful!!! I love your attention to detail, you always create such amazing costumes! So looking forward to the rest of this one!!! Have a magical day!
I was literally going to look up how to possibly smock by hand 🥲 this is so beautifully done!! Giving me that motivation to pick up my half finished projects
I've used the same dyes and also had problems with blotchiness and unevenness of colour. I wasn't able to get consistent results so I gave up and now use Rit machine dyes. I get even results every time.
Huh... just two of those petticoats already create enough of those magical *floofs*. There's just enough that you could get away with it wearing it out on the street as well. And they look so much more comfortable to boot! Maybe I should make some myself to wear under my 1950s style dresses and skirts.... I personally would add another closure or two to make the waistband actually match up, but I don't suppose that will matter much once the actual dress is on. Food for thoughts.
Oh yay! Funny how we get into our little routines - I always watch your videos on sundays, usually during breakfast, and I missed you this weekend! I was just thinking about this project this very morning!
Bella! Bella! I saw a video from art insider, a designer named Melody Delatorre uses a wooden dowel to roll up the fabric before feeding it to the smocking pleater. I just thought this could help you😊
Yup! That’s the standard way to do it. I tried that, but I couldn’t get it tight enough in order to roll all the fabric up (because it then wouldn’t fit in the area behind the pleater bars.) But thanks for mentioning it!
I’m glad you’re making this because I’ve been wanting to and had no idea where to begin. Suggestion: maiden dress. Since she is one and it sounds a bit nicer than maid
It's so cute! Would you consider to make a tutorial on a simple/easy corset, for someone who has experience in sewing, but not with corsets or formal design in general?
For an easy corset I honestly recommend the Truly Victorian TV110 pattern, it’s very straightforward, comes with a multitude of sizes and is very easy to blend sizes to get something that works for you.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll do that type of video, but honestly...there's really an "easy" corset... I'd recommend finding some more structured bodice patterns and learn all about that to the point that you are comfortable, then move onto corsets. Though, I will recommend this video from Alicia! ua-cam.com/video/0_uajctBIEE/v-deo.html She has a great pattern and method fro making her corsets!
❤❤❤, I knew going do this dress next. I like explain the whole progress how made this dress. I have question/ suggest, have seen the Sleepy Hollow movie? If have seen this movie, will doing famous black/white dress in future.
Great video as always! And I'm here to bring a little bit of critique to the comment section (not critique of you, of course). One thing I dislike about this dress is that neckline. It's very low, it looks improper for a non-evening dress and it's impractical (worrying about showing too much when bending over, less support, dirt getting there...). Well, two things, that light sheer fabric the outer part is made of would probably be quite expensive and easy to damage 😀 as I've said, that's nothing against you or your work! I really love your videos and enjoy this series! I've even started with sewing. Don't mind me, I'm a Czech person, which means I like to criticise everything, everytime and everywhere, even if I have little knowledge about the topic; that's our main national quality 😀
