  • Make purgatory great again! Valheim is a brilliant Viking themed survival game that has become an overnight success. It didnt take me long to realise why this game is so popular and well received. Put simply, its an indie gem.

    On the first build where I was running my private server, one of my group was constantly pestered by a flying Neck. He couldn't hurt it, it couldn't hurt him, and nobody else could see it. This persisted through innumerable relogs and several server restarts.
    So yeah, he's our clan's shaman now.

      @m.g7408 3 роки тому

      Ive played neither and am exited by both but keeping in mind that AC Valhalla was the best selling entry in the franchise and made ubisoft their most profitable quarter shows its what people want and pay for and definitely if the masses had different priorities and wanted different games then the companies would have done so instead of taking the route they are on so to some extent I think its futile criticizing the big publishers and at the same time ignoring that they make games for the masses to maximize profit and at the end of the day its the people that dictate what they do and if these franchises had not sold as they did they would have been cut immediately or changed to cater to the audience, so I think at least half of the criticisms must be targeted at the people buying these games if you think its not right and if things are to change its vital to educate people to not settle for the same old same old time and time again cuz no matter how much you criticize a company at the end of the day their decision making process is based upon market data and scientific formulas and they are not gonna change it until you change that data. Also realistically Valhalla had a 500 million dollar budget, if anyone including you and me had invested this kind of money on a product we would be looking for a strategy to minimize risk and maximize profit, no one would take a route in the dark that could lead to loss of investment while there is tried and proven routes that guarantee the outcome to some extent. Its not realistic for a product with that investment to take a route like valheim did. There are many similar games like valheim that didnt work. You wont find a producer in any industry that would axe its best selling product to instead start producing an innovative alternative that may or may not work! That kind of thing happens in the startup sector with low investments and if it proves its worth is then upscaled in multiple stages. Why do you expect the video game industry to be different?

    Quick tip mate - Control-click moves entire stack of items to other inventory, always adding to the existing stacks until they are full. A very neat and convenient ui feature that saves mouse movements. Shift-click on the other hand will let split stacks. Shift-click defaults to 50% of stack but You can adjust the slider. I am amazed that this game have so many good UI and interface perks and quality of life features that are often missed in other games.

    To illustrate the amount of fuckery that you're going to get addicted to, I just spent 3 real life days trying to get back me high end shit because I've avoided the mountain biome for too long, got the nerve to go, had all my nice stuff and both got froze to death and one-shotted by a fucking wolf... Many deaths later and I finally have retrieved my shit, it was frustrating but I couldn't not retrieve my shit and just decided to brute force it with a line of campfires and when I was in the general vicinity made a lean to... which was great until more wolves skull fucked me and a drake blew up my lean to... by this point there was absolutely no marker for my original death which lead to yet-more deaths trying to get back to that general area and rebuilding my decimated lean to... then I couldn't find the damned orignal death point and a whiteout hit and another drake sniped me... repeat this cycle til I found the drop, picked my shit up, got to my lean to and died in front of it because of yet another sniper shot up the ass by a drake... it's at this point that self-awareness hit and I realized that I've spent 3 actual days to get this shit back, so I respawned in my lean to, grabbed my shit and gtfo... base abandoned, balls singed, finally back at my main base... I regret nothing!

My skills as a Viking architect are complete rubbish, but that's my fault, not the game's, but I am getting better, so Frank Lloyd Wright better watch out, Harry's chasing the crown. As I suspected, 2021 is getting better and better in every way, a very few games, like this one, included - though hardly surprising, after the completely fucked 2020. This game is amazing. I'm very glad to have snagged it while it's still $20 US. I've gotten more out of this game in the short time I've had it than I've put into many titles triple the cost. If you don't have it, get it. As far as the graphics, it's def an art choice, sure the models are built on that pixelated low res poly stuff that was great on ps1, however, they did some shit to this game that will guarantee that you'd never be able to run it on a ps1, if you run it via vulkan and up the graphics to max raytracing is enabled. IDK if that's Nvidia dependent, but, I've been able to get that effect running smoothly on my supposedly unsuported gtx 1050 ti just fine.
    I'm completely flabbergasted that this game is so feature complete for an early early access title...

If it clicks with you, and you get into the games systems, and enjoy spending whole afternoons building bases, and hours making roads on an island, then this game will be a bigger time sink than Skyrim. I reckon give it a spin. Its cheap, and you will be supporting a good developer.

    Holy shit. THAT was a review! (Although, I wish you had put a spoiler alert about the fishing pole). Small gripe given there really weren't any others, and balanced against the sheer depth and, dare I say, eloquence of your descriptions. This review is a real service to the gaming community. THANK YOU, good sir!
    I'm a tad over 100 hours in, having only defeated the first boss and LOVING being granted the freedom to take my time and enjoy each new accomplishment. I could easily play for another 100 hours just building with the skills, resources and tools I presently possess. Like a few gems of games before it I can safely say of Valheim: "It is not a game you play. It is a game you live."
    And I continue to look forward to each day I "arrive".

    • @21Kiloton
      @21Kiloton  3 роки тому

      Apologies for the spoiler fella. I agree with your take on the pacing of the game. Im actually pootling around, setting up little ports and building infrastructure so I can gather and transport metals more easily to a central hub, and doing all sorts of off-topic activities just because Im enjoying myself so much. I think the job does an excellent job of rewarding you whatever you decide to do. Some players want to aggressively cap progress and others want a more "systematic" journey to the end game. Personally Im having so much fun building tree houses and exploring swamps I think it will take me forever to get to the last boss.
      Thanks for watching mate. Glad you are enjoying the game.

    I just stumbled upon your video from related content. Holy crap, you are hilarious 😂. Also, your review is very informative, well thought out and kept me engaged without spoiling the game. Well done sir. A like and new sub from me.

    Im still unsure about this game, i dont really have anyone to play it with so im afraid i will waste my money just like i did with Minecraft. My main issue with these type of games is that the overworld is "empty", theres no characters, factions big settlements and things like that that give the illusion its a "living world" of sorts.
    As always nice to see more content. I hope you start streaming again soon even if its for only a day every week. Also im willing to lend you a hand with modding Fallout 4, theres a mod that adds real brothel mechanics with rewards. (it is also SFW.)

      I will probably not be playing Fallout 4 in the short term but thank you kindly for the offer. As for Valheim, I cant honestly predict whether you will enjoy it, but I am playing solo and really loving it. I personally found that the open world quite engaging because there are enough nasty surprises constantly that you generally feel quite immersed in the game.
      I wish you luck either way Rave.

    I built a port on the other side of my massive starting area only to then hit the plains biome and start an entirely new base that is about 3x the size of my original large one in the black forest just so I can farm efficiently. I have built so many bases/outposts I started abandoning them because I found better and better locations to build... this game is sucking my life away and I am ok with that.

    Imo, the most important thing that they should patch right away is the coal mechanics. Charcoal is derived from plant matter, coal is a rock.

    To be fair, weaponized pigs that try to murder you is pretty much how the swedish wilderness in real life is. On that note, it's impressive how true to the real life nordic wilderness this actually looks like. Well, with the exception of trolls and other mythological beings.

    Terraforming is what really blows up the save time and base pop in. I used a mod that allowed me to flatten 40 ft at a time and had the game nearly locking up for saves after using it about 6 times. Go easy on the voxels. On the bright side critters path on the reformed terrain quite well I think, surprisingly so.

    Wish AAA developers would realize that graphics don't make the game, the game makes the game. And sick graphics are a bonus. I still play Counterstrike:Source. Its still a good time.

    I have found the building does not "just work" it is TERRIBLE. I love building, I mostly built bases in F04 but I have yet to find building in this game fun.
