Very adequat and important! It has already been seven years since ICAN received this award, but the development since then have unfortunately shown that the nuclear threat by no means disappeared with the Cold War.
Congratulations to the Nihon Hidankyõ, but also to the Nobel Committee, showing a solid understanding of both history and the current world situation. Those with the right to propose candidates for the prize and who find it worthy to nominate representatives of a military alliance with nuclear weapons as a strategy, together with everyone who praises a logic of deterrence, are definitely on the wrong track when it comes to understanding the criteria of the peace prize.
As much as it is about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this is about the here and now and everyone's future, which can in no way be overstated. It remains to be seen whether Norway will finally ratify the UN ban on nuclear weapons, and whether any leading Norwegian politicians choose to refrain from applause also during this Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Wouldn’t it be nice if it had gone to Hind Postley, in the hopes it would focus a certain administration attention to the horrors that is happening in Gaza?
