- The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 with one half to David Baker, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA, “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind, London, UK and John M. Jumper, Google DeepMind, London, UK “for protein structure prediction”.

THere is historical precedence, previous Nobel Prizes related to protein structure and function have been awarded in Chemistry. For example, the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for studies of G-protein-coupled receptors, and the 2009 prize was for the structure and function of the ribosome.
@@Arcticwhir Because they consider that life is nothing but chemistry ... and that is wrong because Life contain a fundamental component which is information that component we don't find it in chemistry ... life=chemistry + information.. So that prize must be named for "chemistry and Biochemistry"

Not at all, they are not proteins based on cellular functions. Only proposed new compounds.
protein folding is more of a chemistry issue as we are concerned with the structure of certain molecules 'after they fold' into an energetically favourable state. It's not so much about "what are these proteins doing" and more so, "if I give you this molecule, what does it look like?"
This one is really about biology. No researcher is surprised by this price. Look at the citations of the alphafold papers :)
