- Palmettos (Sabal palmetto) and pindo palms (Butia capitata) planted and naturalized at the northern end of the Oceanfront along Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
I love the palms in VA Beach! The seedlings that have grown from fallen seed will grow into trees will have a better chance of surviving even better with cold hardiness.
Me too, the palms there are truly remarkable. Yeah, the volunteers are more cold hardy than the parent palms, and there are quite a few big ones along the Oceanfront and Atlantic Avenue. Thanks, cheers!
Crazy to see palm trees in VA
Oh yeah, there are palms all over VA, but once you get into the southeastern part of the state they start to become super common. I can't wait to get back to Virginia Beach! Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more videos, take care!
No it’s not crazy to see palm trees in Virginia, especially in Virginia Beach. 🏝 🌴🌴 🏖
Yeah, they don’t belong here….but they’ve forced em on us for the “look”
Where would you say is the northern most state where Sabal palmettos can survive year around without too much protection?
Around Virginia Beach or maybe parts of the eastern shore of Maryland, and Washington state on the West Coast in good warm microclimates by the coast.
Palm trees give Virginia Beach a more tropical beachy feel. 🌴🏝🏖
Absolutely, VA Beach is the start of the Palm Coast, love it. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more videos, take care!
Nah, the big azz ocean and beach does. Smh
I remember that area in the north end...The Palms look like they grew some since 2015... thanks bud 👍
Yeah, they certainly have put on some growth since then. I remember seeing a video from a number of years ago of those palms and the crowns were much smaller, they look a lot better now. Thanks for watching, cheers Sandor!
So Virginia Beach is the northernmost in east coast to see palm trees ?
The northernmost place they’re very common, and they are everywhere there, but certainly not the northernmost on the East Coast. There are palms all the way up to southern New England and a number in D.C. where I live. Thanks for watching!
@@palmplanet I mean it’s crazy that Virginia Beach has a lot of palm trees, drove to tenesee and there were no palm trees over there at all , and tenesee is a little bit more south than Virginia Beach which makes no sense
Tennessee is further south but doesn’t have the warming of the ocean that’s why they don’t have the palms
Yes
@@palmplanet they are not everywhere here and they are not common…why would you say that?
Great update!
Thanks, most of the palms along the Oceanfront seem to be doing very well, the mild winter really helped them out. Thanks for watching, take care!
The sabals look nice 👍😃
Thanks, those are some nice ones! Lots of gorgeous Sabals in VA Beach. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more videos! Take care!
You were close but it was actually 2018 winter, the temps in Virginia Beach went down to 14 degrees overnight one night.
Ah, I see. Was it the 2017-18 winter or 2018-19 winter? Whichever it was it was certainly rough, palms in D.C. area took a beating as well. Thanks for watching, take care!
@@palmplanet 18-19 the main cold was late December 2018 right before new year’s
@@natemiller3098 Interesting, thanks for sharing! Glad some of the palms survived it, they are really making a comeback! Lots of huge palmettos and pindos along the Oceanfront. Thanks for watching!
Check out some of my VA Beach palms from a few years back. Same location but the palms looks awful!
Thanks, yeah I have seen your videos on them before but I just went back and watched them. They have certainly put on substantial growth since then, they definitely look better now. Thanks, take care!
Awesome!
Thanks, there are tons of beautiful Sabals around VA Beach. Thanks for watching, take care!
If those look so good in Virginia then I wonder what mine will look like!
I bet they will do really well, you probably have a similar climate to Virginia Beach, I am jealous! Yeah Virginia Beach is an incredible place with lots of palms! Cheers, thanks for watching, take care!
@@palmplanet thank you amd youre welcome! I probably do just not the strong ocean breeze and the salty smell
@@gasubtropics Yeah exactly, they should thrive there! Cheers, take care!
They're not quite as full as in Myrtle Beach but glad to see them this far up north.
Yes many of the more recent plantings have less full crowns but some of the old ones, which there are lots of, have massive crowns like you see down in Myrtle Beach. Check out my recent videos from VA Beach, I was just down there a couple weeks ago and saw some gorgeous full crown palmettos. Thanks for watching!
Due to climate change/global warming, Virginia Beach has gotten a few degrees warmer over the last 30+ years when it comes to climate averages for the area. That’s more then enough for cold hardy palm trees and some tropical plants to grow and thrive in the Virginia Beach area. Before 1970 there were no kind of palm trees to be discovered in Virginia Beach, I could be wrong on that one. 🏝 🌴🌴
Yes exactly, no doubt many of the more marginal palms in Virginia Beach do better now because it has warmed several degrees. There were definitely palms in Virginia Beach before 1970, but they didn’t start to be commonly planted before then, when people realized the potential and planted many of them. And dwarf palmetto likely is or was native to Virginia Beach, currently the northernmost known specimens are just south of the VA-NC border, so many of the hardy species did well there before global warming began, but no doubt it has helped many marginal palms survive. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching, stay tuned for more videos, take care!
I would have to think Jungle Golf at Pacific and 22nd had some of the first palms in commercial plantings, but I don’t know exactly when they were planted ( Or if the originals survived 1985’s subzero winter). The Trachycarpus at the nearby Norfolk Botanical Garden were from the 70s at least
Imagine Baltimore having a lot of palms!
Haha, yeah I really wish the city would start planting some. D.C. plants a few. Thanks and take care!
I’m sure windmills could thrive there
@@md_randoms2429 I actually bought 100+ windmill palms seedlings and they all grew nicely! They survived the winters and snow. It snowed like three times this year and they still growing! Not to mention they actually like clay soil and always thought sandy soil was a requirement.
Have to say this climate we're getting now is just abnormal and these palms are taking advantage of it!
@@KeyDevy yup most definitely, that Bay Area weather is definitely way nicer and less harsh in the winter for palms compared to up here in the Hagerstown MD area
