    I was also pleasantly shocked to see all the palms and semi tropical in England as well. Roses were blooming in December. I loved it.

    The Gulf Stream heads northeast around North Carolina and its influence extends to the UK and that helps them. Lowest recorded in London is 7F and I'm sure 10F or less is extremely rare. Humidity is generally higher there. Thanks for showing that lush wonderful spot there, even the Olive trees look really good and that's quite a bit different than the mediterranean climate in the south of France.

      7f though was in the outskirts. City centre record low is 16f. Kentia palms grow in the city centre. Since 1980s parts of central London have not gone below 25f and 17.6f for the outer most outskirts areas. Also humidity here is the lowest in the UK but still generally highish, though most of the time when it's warm it's a dry heat due to the heat coming off either continental Europe, the Mediterranean, or occasionally all the way up from Africa like in July 2022 when it hit 104.5f. For reference to how mild it is during the winter I have archontophoenix growing unprotected there in the city centre.

      @@NikauPalmCal In Jan 2023 Heathrow hit -8.4C (17F) and that's the coldest since December 2010. But the coldest recorded temperature is −16.1 °C (3.0 °F) 1 January 1962. Airports tend to be colder because most are on the outskirts of the city but that' where the official temperature is usually taken for the major cities of the world. It wouldn't surprise me that it hasn't been below 20F in central London for decades, and that probably explains why the subtropicals can get so large there.

      @@nathanielalgernon975 Heathrow in 2023 was the coldest since the 80s freezes as far as I'm aware not 2010. Also Heathrow and raf northolt are West (further inland from the sea). The coldest temp was at northolt Heathrow has a record low of -11c. For comparison during that 2023 Jan freeze it was -2c here in central London. 2010 was -3c in central London. Kentia palms were damaged but survived. In the city center for as long as I've been alive I have never seen a washingtonia or CIDP get damaged. Outskirts they do (Bit of Browning) during bad freezes. My average annual low on my Davis weather station since 2019 has just been barely above 30f.

      @@nathanielalgernon975 Yeah and the urban heat island there is super strong, so it stays much warmer in the center than other parts of the city and outskirts.

    I've heard, in such a way as to believe it, that there is a large Canary Island Date just off Trafalgar Square. The UK is an amazing place where so much can be grown. The Seattle to London comparison that is made in the clip is completely correct. Both are Marine West-Coast Climate, yet there are significant differences. Seattle can have harder cold snaps. And Seattle's summers can be fairly dry whereas London's rainfall is more evenly spread out over the year.

    • @NikauPalmCal
      @NikauPalmCal 11 днів тому +1

      When palm planet visited in July it was much wetter than usual, however August was dry. London in recent summers especially has had much drier summers compared to the winter rainfall. June had 12mm of rain for example. The grass here by August typically is parched and brown.

    Palm trees are becoming very widely spread in all the parts of west Europe where winters are mild. Because of the gardening culture England has many of the biggest specimens. What you've shown there isn't even that impressive anymore. While in London you should check out even more of them!

      Some individual palms are just slightly hardier than others. But in central London they never get killed in freezes.
