On the back of a new roll, there is an arrow. I will assume that it points in the direction of rotation of the drum, but it doesn't say which side of the drum you start at.
I started rolling on the paper on Jet 25-50 sander on the R side (the motor side). Getting the paper in there is difficult. The clip is difficult to access and depress while, at the same time, feeding the end of the roll through it. You might be more successful if you use needle nose pliers to depress the clip. The curve in the paper makes the end want to curl backwards.
The one tool that I find very helpful is a medical tool called a mosquito clamp or kelly clamp. If you or a family member ever needs to get a laceration repaired with sutures (stitches), that instrument is in the suture tray and is usually disposable. The doctor will throw it away unless you ask for it. When you click onto the end of the paper with it, you can let go and the clamp will hang on to it. I have also seen that clamp sold at electronic stores because it gives you another hand when soldering. Some have also called it a "roach clip." Do not call it that when asking for it!
If you have the extended infeed/outfeed tables attached, you will need to flip the infeed table down in order reach the R clip. There is just enough paper on the roll to make it to the other end as long as you are careful and align each rotated paper with the one next to it. Try to make it tight. The most fragile part of the paper is its narrowest ends. If that tears, you can't use that roll in the sander, so be careful handling the roll ends because there is no room for error. Make sure that you put enough through the clip, but not too much. About an inch is plenty. When you first start up after changing the roll, listen for any rubbing sounds and if you hear that, immediately turn it off and re-tighten it. There should be absolutely no overwrap. When sanding, avoid using the extreme edges of the sander unless you need to sand something wider than the drum, in which case you have no choice. That is because, again, you will be sanding with the end of the roll, which is narrower than the rest and it could tear. You can extend the life of the paper by using one of those giant rubber erasers. Avoid sanding resinous softwoods (like pine) because they will fill up the spaces between the grits very quickly and the eraser won't remove the material from the paper very well because of the sticky resin. If you have a bench planer and the work piece will fit in it, use the planer instead. It is much faster and will give you nice results without the sanding marks when using the drum sander. The planer blades will stay sharp a very long time (especially if you don't take large bites), but the paper wears out much quicker.
You pretty much have to attach a decent vacuum cleaner to the dust port. The dust produced by the drum sander is very fine and will go directly to the vacuum's filter and clog it up way before the canister ever gets full.

Changing sandpaper is actually easy after learning the secret and practicing a couple of times. Follow the instructions in this video all the way to the point when you are ready to secure the paper strip on the right side. Then ... with the insertion slot of the drum (right side) at the top (you are looking down on it) place your left thumb on the top of the drum to hold the paper in place and use the index finger of your left hand to feel for the clasp on the inside of the drum. The clasp will operate like one side of a wooden clothes pin, except it is metal, of course. Pull up on the clasp, all the way until the clasp quits moving and hold it tightly against the inside of the drum. At this point, use your right hand to poke the pointed end of the sandpaper into the slot that you see. Smooth the end of the sandpaper against the drum surface and slowly release the the tension on the clasp with your left hand. Job is done. Incidentally, the tool isn't necessary.

No video of the 2nd attachment of the end of the sandpaper...that's where the uncertainty is.

You need the Tuf-Tool, a flashlight, a mirror, patience, about an hour and make
sure there are no children in the shop.

Having a helper or two is a necessity. It takes longer than an hour what with a coffee break, and the arguing between the 3 shop mechanics doing the job. @@iancrossley6637

Why are the left clip and right clips different?

I appreciate your attempt to make this look easy, but I cannot get the right side end to clip in. I cannot see enough to do it. I just don't know what I'm doing. I consider myself of average mechanical skill. Any further help? I cannot tell where the end goes in once it gets into the slot - up, down, straight in?

Chuck, I have the same machine and it's a PIA.
I had just ruined a belt by running some Pre-Primed wood through-
bad idea, clogged the belt. Went to put a new one on and could not find the
tool used to install it on the right side. Found the tool on the internet.
It's called a Tuf-Tool. You wiggle it in there catching a hole and lift it up onto
the ALUMINUM drum. Install your paper and let it off. Save the tool.

He didn’t actually clip it in at the right end. You can see him struggle and sticking the paper straight down isn’t how that clips in

It was SO obvious that he was "cowpie ing" us. There is no way in Hades that he could have gotten the tail end of that paper in the clip that fast. Worst design I've ever seen.!! @@Kywiscono

Changing paper is a nightmare; I wish JET had done a better job with the right and left clamps.

You can save money by buying sandpaper in bulk rolls, assuming that you use the sander frequently. This is easy if you use the old strip as a template.

Same ignorant way that SM does it. Why couldn't they have put the tensioner clip on the outboard end so you can get to it.

They gave the design of the clasp to an apprentice junior designer.
You need the Tuf-Tool to make it easier.
