    I had the same problem with the paper overlapping and then met a sales rep at a woodworking show and he told me the solution which is quite simple. The mistake I was making was to face the in-feed side of the sander when installing a new roll of abrasive. If you go to the out-feed side and install the abrasive from there you will have no more overlapping paper problem. It sounds odd but works.

    Excellent review. I don’t even own this unit, but appreciate your effort to help out fellow woodworkers.

    Best drum sander video I see so far. I am considering buying a drum sander, looking for reviews on youtube to decide which to buy, and come across your video. Now I know what I may get into using a drum sander.

    I sold these sanders for almost twenty years at the local Woodcraft store and own a larger one which has two drums. I never had issues with sandpaper sliding. I believe you are wrapping the drum incorrectly.

    Hey sorry so many questions but love the analytical approach to tools which helps me think things through. Was wondering what band saw (assuming you have one) that you use and how you like it? I didn’t see a video on this on your channel but will check again. Thx.

    I heard of people using the hook and loop system available from grizzly to solve the overlap problem. It also makes it easier for sand paper change outs

    How about the centrifugal force when rotating...does that open the tensioning lever?

    • @LoneOakWoodworks
      @LoneOakWoodworks  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't had any issue with paper coming loose, so the spring is strong enough to handle any centrifugal force.

    Do you max out the tension on those guide rollers? No issues doing that?

      I actually no longer have it due to not using much and wanting the floor space, so sorry can't remember well enough to answer the question.

    I’m hoping to invest in a drum sander. Expensive but from what I can see from others, probably worth its cost just due to reduction in labor for sanding. Curious, how do you like this now, three yrs later? Also what was the cost of that unit? Thx man.

      I buy most of my tools used and found this one for $1200 at the time. It's honestly gotten very little use from me, somewhat because of what I've built and also just because I haven't had time to build that many projects.

    I find with my drum sander it needs the plastic dresser as I pass the wood through. This means I don’t have dust extraction as the lid is off. No dresser and the abrasive clogs up within a few seconds. The alternative is to dress the belt after each pass. Often that is not good enough. The tensioning mechanism is very poor. Having said that, I use it a lot. It’s quiet and doesn’t tear the grain like a planer. Maybe more vigorous dust extraction may lessen the need for the dresser.

      I don't have much of an issue unless I'm sanding something with epoxy in it. Maybe try a different brand of paper, or it may be the type of would you are standing.

    can you put a wide belt on it, or modify for one.. wish jet would have that available to solve this issue

      It's just not made that way, would need to disassemble to get the belt on the drum.

    Pretty impressive finish for 80g, just after a pass.

    I was just curious. When you have the oscillating feature turned on. Is there any need to send with a orbital hand sander? Or, is the finish off of the drum sander good enough? Thank you for your time

      It would depend on the wood and the grit of paper you use on the drum. I'm mostly using it for larger pieces with epoxy that I have to flip and run each side, then hand sand to finish. The epoxy is always going to need more attention, so I can't say for sure what's the best result you could get it trying to only use the drum.

    In order to avoid burning of wood by drum-sander ,use Abranet Max mesh by Mirka instead of cloth :)

    • @LoneOakWoodworks
      @LoneOakWoodworks  2 роки тому

      Excellent tip, I've got Mirka Abranet sanding disks but never thought to look for rolls for the drum sander. Next purchase will be Abranet just for results, but will need to wait and see if it stops the problem of the material wanting to shift on the drum and overlap itself.

    call supermax next time for the board! mine was 35 bucks lol. jet screws people!!

      I'll have to look into that, when I searched online for a replacement board it looked like hundreds, just now I found a listing on Jet's site for $144 which is still pricey. When it acts up again I'll definitely give Supermax a call, thanks for the tip!
