Kotzen is great and precise but what i like is the attack of yngwie is so much of a character, is like he is kicking your ass everytime it is full of angst
RK..why bother comparing? Fast picking is so outdated but we all know RK's bluesy feeling will stand the test of time and would've been approved by listeners of 30 years ago
I can tell ya right now yngwie didnt just copy ritchies licks and play them quicker, there’s stuff yngwie does that isnt ritchie like at all. Obviously he loves blackmore (and uli roth) but there are definitely licks that yngwie does that arent very blackmore like and we’re probably more in line with other guys
Yngwie is awesome but hes become sort of like a actor who gets typecast. He throws that same scale in everything. But hes still amazing in my top 3 guitarist. Ritchie is the man too, very awesome
This video, more than any other I've seen, shows me that people are gonna hate Yngwie just because he's Yngwie. If Malmsteen had done that Kotzen solo, people would have crucified him for "just shredding with no soul like he always does". In this example, he plays a solo that's respectful to the original but then adds his own stamp towards the end. Kotzen's solo is... just a fast solo. Yngwie's is better, to my ears, by a million miles.
@@JohnWahlers Each to their own, man. I've seen Yngwie live many times, too. Why do I need my ears cleaned out, and you don't? What makes me definitely wrong, and you definitely right? Yngwie's is better, as I said, to my ears. Kotzen's is better to yours. I guess our tastes vary.
Malmsteen’s take is more akin to Blackmore, albeit more technically proficient. For me, I prefer Kotzen’s take. Those arpeggio flourishes and legato runs are fluid and musical. Not trying to cast any shade on Yngwie, love him as well.
I love Kotzen ... but you picked yngwies cover from a crappy show. He does it better now. And Kotzen is a monster doesn’t even come close to playing better than Malmsteen. And sorry, yngwie can do Ritchie better than Ritchie can do himself nowadays
Kotzen is unreal..he came onto the scene a little later and missed the big 80s wave..at least here in N.A..we should thank JAPAN for keeping rock alive through the drought over the last 30 yrs.
Richie all the way. He’s great with a pick but I think he’s more expressive and unique without the pick. Much harder to pull off the techniques he does. Incredible
They're both great. Malmsteen captures more of Blackmore's spirit in his rendition (whilst at the same time adding his own flair) whilst Richie goes in a slightly different direction. It's all good to me!
I actually thought it was the other way around. Richie's version had more elements of the original while Malmsteen's was basically the same stuff he always does, adapted to this song.
Ritchie has this contest hands down. He stays in the pocket and doesn't waste notes. He plays clean and stays in the framework of the song. Yngwie always has to be a "Speed Demon" and most of his leads sound the same. All over the place!!!!!
Remamber. Yngwie is improvising but Richie is playing well rehearsed and practiced solo. There is no point to compare. There is one thing that we all agree that both are great guitar players 🤘

The thing with Malmsteen is, even today with a gazillion technically proficient players on the planet and a dated genre, he is instantly recognizable. The tone, the licks, the way he (over?)confidently plays everything. It's unique to him.

The real answer is Doug Aldrich (WHITESNAKE). His version on "Live in Still of the Night DVD" puts Yngwie and Richie to shame in that regard. His tone was to die for too.
Nice to see Richie playing with a pick and with some of that flawless technique that got him noticed all those years ago, both solos are great but for me RK wins this one.
Yeah I think Richies got more to his game than Yngwie and I too am a massive Malmsteen fan, although on the rare occasions when Yngwie goes into blues mode his playing is on another level too.
Super suprised by Ritchies ripper ! But guys, would Richie even be playing all those sweet arpeggio's if it weren't for Malmsteen's first album, which changes the way guitar players play ?
I love Yngwie but I have to go with Kotzen on this one. How old is this? It has Billie Sheehan but kotzen is playing with a pick. I thought it’s been a while since he used a pick
Even though Kotzen was even more technical and clean on this solo, Malmsteen’s scales were much more appropriate for this composition. Malmsteen really contributed to this barocco feel, whereas Kotzen just showed how else you can play on this chord progression. His guitar work here expands the technical horizon, but it doesn’t really contribute to musicality.
Liked Kotzen's version much better. Honors the original more and fits with the song better, with some real shredding added, while Yngwie's solo was basically just the same thing he always plays for everything.
