Tohatsu has done it again. I do like the Mercury tiller controls better than the Tohatsu's . Tohatsu bulletproof reliability with the improved Mercury ergonomics.
Bought a 20hp back in Dec 2019 for the 2020 model year. Saw all the reviews online and UA-cam about all the awesome features and the reliability. Sadly after having the dealer Prep the unit, so I would get the extended warranty. Thought I was ready for the water once my boat build was finished. Took it out for the first time this season after the COVID mess. After the 1st hour and a half the unit stalled and had trouble restarting and when it would start I’d put it in gear and it would stall again. Had to be towed in. Next day brought it back to the dealer and they’ve had it for the last three weeks. No answers as to why it failed. Went and drove an hour to pick it up on the 27th of June. Tech said he couldn’t reproduce the issue multiple times trying to. Had them run it while i was there and it failed on the rack. Tech couldn’t believe it now it’s another week and they still have the motor. Waiting for Merc to contact them. Not cool! Now the boat I built to take my family out on the water with. Is sitting in my driveway. It’s not my first time breaking in an outboard so I know it wasn’t me. See what the rest of this summer brings. Hopefully ill have a reliable motor at some point. Always trusted Merc in the past. Hopefully I can again in the future.
Ive owned 3 Mercs only one had a problem. My 20hp 89, 2004 225, and my 2015 25hp all going strong never one hiccup. However, my 2015 9.9hp hasnt stopped giving me problems. The tech never could reproduce the issue in their test tank. I just ordered the new 2020 20hp. Dont have any doubts about it. Sometimes you get a lemon
I laugh when I hear people say tohatsu stinks and mercs are better or vice versa, when tohatsu makes all mercs smaller engines for them,as well as nissan in the past and evinrude 4 strokes and now honda. I do love the design of these new 15/20 efi mercs.
no, if you have the motor without tiller, you typically install a hour meter on the dash by the wheel, if tiller, there are cheap revcounters with built in hour meters. however, as they suggest, either 100 hours OR if you use under 100h per year then 100hr=1yr
Most engines will have either an audible temperature alarm or a warning light. We recommend that you check the operator's manual for the engine you own or contact your local Mercury Marine dealer for assistance. If you wish to speak with our product support team, contact details can be found by visiting www.mercurymarine.com/us/en/about-us/contact-us. Thank you!
just replaced my fogged out 2 stoke yammy with a efi 4 stroke merc and it rips. so much better then the old motor. 140ks out of a 25ltr tank said no 2 stroke owner ever
It's a sweet engine but save yourself hundreds of dollars and get a 20hp tohatsu, same engine basically, just a different tiller handle. Tohatsu makes these engines anyways up to 30hp so your paying for the merc name and a different tiller handle. They are made in japan.
Has Tohatsu moved their shift lever to the tiller yet on this size engine? Only thing I don’t like about my 8HP is having to two-hand the motor while maneuvering at slow speed.
My mechanic is telling me the 15 and 20hp motors are the same motor with a "tweaked carb" and there is little performance difference. I found it strange since the EFI motor doesn't have a carb! It what I being told true? thanks
R R There is a noticeable difference between the two engines in terms of power. They share the same “basic block” and CID displacement but the 20 will have better hole shot, midrange and top end due to tuning for 20 hp.
Ok,I made a mistake. I bought the tohatsu and yes I absolutely love it. Had I known the merc version was coming out so soon I would have waited a bit. The tiller on the merc is state of the art and worth the extra money over the tohatsu. The good part is I lose nothing in performance because all the merc is,is a glorified tohatsu upgrade. Same powerhead and gearcase which is great. I just want that tiller, imo comfort in a tiller handle is priceless. Anyone who owns a tiller can relate with horrible vibration and the tiller only being in one spot, with this tiller you can run the engine up and down, lefty or righty, I love the shifter on the front end of the tiller. This engine is extremely sweet like the tohatsu is. I'm just in love with this tiller and if I'm going to keep this motor as an investment or at minimum 5yrs I may as well get the most comfort for the money.
We mercury users, we would like to get the opportunity to use CDS G3 Diagnostic tool. We would like that all particular can get access to license key. Thank you for your consideration.
These are not the lightest in the market. Tohatsu have the lightest motors. Even Suzuki is heavier, then comes the Mercury, then others, like Honda and Yamaha
i've had both, even with the 2stroke weight savings my 18 tohatsu/merc EFI is a little faster and it idles like a honda civic and does not flood, smoke or foul plugs.

Thats exactly what is it! The multi function tiller is heaven sent on my Mercury 9.9.
Exactly

You are right expect Honda. Tohatsu makes all 4 stroke portable Mercs, Evinrude, and Nissans.
Sweswio for those who don’t have a tohatsu dealer, they can’t get warranty work done. That’s why everyone runs the others.
Could they do this with the 30hp and up just bought a 2020 30hp not happy it doesn’t have these options
How can you tell how many hours you have done ? Is there a gauge under the cover ?

just got my sat tryed out today.was great stared so fast and run great
Great new Tohatsu motor 😂
Thank you kindly.
Which is faster
Will the new 15 and 20hp be available as a kicker. Efi would be great.
Reggie Ralph ,in the merc style yes. They have a 15hp efi pro kicker.
Tohatsu, no there is no kicker.

@@melrose9252 thanks for the reply, i have the 20hp new and the hole shot/performance is scary awesome.
There is no carb
My new merc is coming next week, can't wait. I will do a UA-cam video on it next week to or when it gets to my house.

Great job mercury marine

Richard Nelson ,they are out already.
chris gerbino. I guess I'm just waiting for onlineoutboard.com to get them.
Richard Nelson ,they have them they just haven't updated yet. It should be within the week.
They need to do all the inspections and all that good stuff, one is waiting for me to,lol.
where are the motors produced?
Japan
That is a heavy 15 and 20hp outboard.
Just got mine 20 minutes ago

I want one
When tohatsu sells more engines to mercury then there own brand tohatsu
I want one so bad but their sooooo expensive😭😭
badbassfishing I don’t think they are that bad in comparison, I remember my dad bought an 8hp yamaha 2stroke back in 1999 and it was 2000 dollars.
Хочу 20hp
It's ok a 20hp on a inflatable boat 3.6
It's perfect on my RIB 360. I get lots of torque and approx 23 knots. I recommend 👍🏼
These are not the lightest in the market. Tohatsu have the lightest motors. Even Suzuki is heavier, then comes the Mercury, then others, like Honda and Yamaha
Less power! More weight! Slower top speed! All this for just twice the price of a conventional two stroke! Why not switch?
I'm pretty sure all new outboards have to be 4 stroke because environment stuff, personally I like 2stroke
Less noise, the issue in small boats, a 4 stroke is much better in noise and more efficent.
Mercury um Ótimo Motor eu tenho um 30 HP anda Muito show.
ua-cam.com/video/SvYUL6FkxcY/v-deo.html
I'll stay with my 15 two stroke
i've had both, even with the 2stroke weight savings my 18 tohatsu/merc EFI is a little faster and it idles like a honda civic and does not flood, smoke or foul plugs.
I will upgrade when my 2 stroke lets me down.
riverdragon marine service Some stayed with wagon wheels too.
30 hp and below are made in China 40 50 60 made in Japan above that is USA that is what I was told JT
not true my new 30 definitely says made in japan on the id plate and on the crate it came in
30 and below Tohatsu of Japan. 40, 50 and 60 is China. Above that made in USA.
and yamaha are still in the 1900s with their 15hp, as their 15hp is carb'd and way too heavy. Avoid yamaha
junk
I have had mine. Sense 2018 and have put 500 hours on her and she is still running good
And what is your proffered outboard
