I used to listen to WJZZ to go to sleep as a little kid and this song came on. Gave me a bittersweet comfort as a child. And now that I moved away from my childhood home almost ten years ago, hearing this song it hits much more differently as an older adult. So much changed in my city & in society. Hearing the song again, I realize it was like he was warning me as a youth but I just didn’t listen until I became an adult.
Really good record. Love this. A lyric most can relate to, great musicianship and Lou Rawls had a proper, distinctive voice, clear diction and unique sound unlike many of today's soundalike so-called singers.
Almost brings me to tears now, good to know George Benson`s alive and kicking. When i was a kid, when my grandad was ill, my nan used to spread lard all over his back---------------- he went downhill quickly after that ; )
Here's today's birthday boy George Benson on the opening recitation and playing a masterful guitar solo on my song. ua-cam.com/video/Nxrj_msgv6E/v-deo.html

I first heard this song in 1989. Since then I loved Lou Rawls.
Song is so on point,.
With his pal George Benson helping out. What a great tune from two cats who REALLY had it together.
One of the saddest yet truest statements about life ever committed to any media.
