    For those asking if Jessie J was sick during this performance, she was. She has a heart condition and almost wasn't allowed to perform because of it. But she still went for it and that's why it's so emotional and raw, because she's literally talking about her own heart going on. Strong girl

    I love that she isn’t trying to mimic Celine Dion but isn’t destroying the song either. There is a fine line between trying to sound just like the original artist (usually a mistake made by amateurs, not pros) and fighting too hard to go the opposite way. She didn’t seem to be putting a ton of effort into either of those things; she just sang it. Her way. No forcing anything.

    • @2007words
      @2007words 6 років тому +27

      I agree! To me it was so refreshing to see someone take their own spin on this song. Other artists have tried to take it to that Celine space but Celine is Celine. Jessie J just made it sound her own. Brilliant!

      Why was she gonna faint??

    • @Lilka20061990
      @Lilka20061990 6 років тому +287

      Because she was in a hospital. Her heart disease flared up. She was in London and she flew to China against her doctors advice just to perform this. She made it there in time for the taping of the show, no time to rehearse. She was weak the whole show. You can watch the episode, they have English subtitles, it’s on UA-cam. It on Hunan TVs channel. Also she posted on Instagram about this performance and said it’s hard to watch cause she can tell every moment in which she was feeling faint. But she got through it and slayed. I’d be such a drama queen if I didn’t faint on stage I’d faint right after the performance lol

    I am so happy you posted a reaction to Jessie J - especially this performance. It was an incredible performance, especially when taking into account that she literally just got out of the hospital because of her heart disease and just got back from a 24 hour flight from London back to China! Even more emotional than her usual, more "technically clean" performances.

      Just another pop singer? She is not another lip syncing pop singer :D
      She sings extremely hard pop songs, she always performs live, she almost never screws up runs, consistent pitch and extremely good stage presence.
      For Jessie J, performing classical ballads is a piece of cake coming from her soul, r'n'b, pop and rock background. Have you ever heard her sing live? I mean, she can sing the phone book and you can tell she will kill I have nothing, My heart will go on etc. You listening to live performance of Jessie J only singing her pop songs you can tell that singing a slow ballad is a walk in the park for her. It's like taking it down a notch.
      I didn't expect anything less than this. Arguably the best live performance of this song "My heart will go on". It has a lot to do with that band. Wow! But also, the best singer in pop.

    • @TheDustyForest
      @TheDustyForest 6 років тому +1

      @Andreas Lindfors well I only really listen to metal and soundtrack music so my experience of pop is not particularly great. I have limited experience of hearing Jessie J sing because I would never normally choose to watch a video of her singing. To me and my experience of having heard her own songs on the radio, I didn't think there was anything to set her apart from other pop singers, and just thought she would have been another singer who would get her brief stint of fame and then fade into obscurity, this video changed my perception on that of course but I don't know if I would worship her to the same extent you did lol

    • @gallifrey1212

      She's definitely underrated to an extent. She doesn't have the popularity of Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, or Christina Aguilera (not yet anyway) but she's on the right path. I think she'll start becoming more well known as she keeps on doing stuff like this that really showcase what she can do.

      The thing is she is really passionate about singing. She got of the scene for a couple years because those pop songs that you were hearing on the radio and her management was pushing her to do weren’t fulfilling her even tho she was getting very popular and making shitload of money. Also she had major health trouble. She lost her passion almost but she changed her lifestyle dropped her management and slowly got back into it. That’s why I respect her and love her. She’s a true artist who does it because she loves it not just for fame or money.

      Vanessa McDermott yeah I really appreciated how he acknowledged that Jessie j has a very good base in technical singing and some of the slight distortions and stylistic choices might not be his cup of tea but are impressive all the same. Some of her choices made the lyrics more impactful at least to her and to a lot of people. But I think this was a point where she really learned to make those choices so tastefully. And she has learned so much subtlety and the importance of restraint as she showed in the performance before the climax. It’s nice to see a reaction with a clear opinion and point of view but not condemn choices that he doesn’t agree with. Great work!

    It's always so interesting watching you do these. Like, you're shaping your mouth, and you nod when confirming what they're doing. And when you discuss what they're doing, it's in such a way that people understand, and other singers watching these can take note. When you're criticizing, it's in such a nice way, explaining what it is they're doing, and it's not putting them down at all. It bothers me so much when someone is rude when discussing why a certain technique didn't work well, and even looking into ways one could improve it, or at least an alternative to make it easier, or something. It's wonderful. Truly a teacher. :)
    I have a couple suggestions. "HIP-HOP GOES BROADWAY" or "HIP-HOP GOES BROADWAY 2"... or "EVOLUTION OF LADY GAGA" by Superfruit.

    The little editing tricks are hilarious. Zooming in on Jack and Rose for the big moments. It's been ages since I've listened to this song without the years of baggage. It really is a fantastic song.
    You touched a bit on emotional color. I'd love to see you tackle something that's very "in character" like from a show and talk a little bit about how it's different when you're, say, Elphaba than if you're Idina Menzel in concert (does that make sense? Character vs performer.)

  • @SeleneDarkbloom

    Her voice is really powerful, not just the heavy high voice, but the gentler softer things are really good. And most importantly she knows how to use it. That's coming from someone who doesn't know much about singing. I had a yer of classical singing and that's it lol.

    I got to say that was an interesting review. You're obviously knowledgeable and you explained your information in a way that i as a non singer could understand. But you've also really helped me understand just why some singers sounds off to me even though they're not necessarily out of tune. I'm going to watch more of your videos now, i just feel like you have much to teach me. Great work. 👏👏👏

      As much as I love Florence and I do, she does a lot wrong technically. I would love to see Sam react, to see if he catches the same things both my mom and I notice, on a technical level. A lot of pop singers have extremely poor and harmful technique, which younger people try to mimic and end up with really bad habits that damage the voice. Sam is usually spot on with vocal assessments.

    I love the positive vibe this channel promotes. Recently, I went home for a visit and my mom (a music teacher) was insistent that singers "are born" and not "made".
