I also built one similar to this, but uses only one 18650 battery. It is super compact and is really really simple.
No boost converter or circuitry needed. The trick is to make sure the heating element recieves all the current it needs, so all contact points (wires, switches) can do at least 2amps. I used stainless metal zipties and cut them into strips and used them as my conductor and as a momentary switch, wide contact is very important. It made the entire assembly need very few parts and still be effective.
In that one you built, the springs in the battery holder limits the current, as a result, you needed the boost converter to suplement the low current draw.
