I agree with this entire assessment. Ridley Scott seems to have gotten completely lost in his own creativity. I was excited for Prometheus because I thought it would answer all the questions. Instead, it left me with more. I thought this might be remedied in Convenant. That turned out to be a bigger disappointment. IMO, the franchise started going left at Alien 3. It was not the sequel we should have gotten after Aliens (which pretty much blew my mind). Oddly enough, the best idea I saw for that was the Colonial Marines video game.

Don't be so tough on Covenant. Despite its many flaws, to me it was still a pretty entertaining movie, that is saved by Michael Fassbender's double performance. David/Walter is the only interesting character(s) here. The opening scene with the dialogue between David and Weyland is awesome. "Bring me the tea, David."
I have watched reviews. Yes, but not the entire film. Pretty much the FIRST in the whole franchise. Prometheus was kinda like witnessing a vomited train wreck, in a 3D theater LOL! R.I.P. Ridley Scott
I agree with your assessment, though I found the ending particularly creepy. Unfortunately, everything leading up to it was a shambles. Science is hard, and real space travel is ponderous and tedious. For the sake of narrative expediency it has to be dumbed-down to the point of irrelevancy. Part of the reason so many find "2001" unwatchable.
@@Geeklectica Many younger viewers (Gen Z post 2000) dislike "2001". Of course they were raised on Marvel and other "non-cinema". Despite the practical hardware appeal of "Alien", it still doesn't hold up to scientific scrutiny. It was purely one of the first sci-fi movies that attempted to look real. I have always regarded it as an A quality B schlock-horror movie.
@@aliensoup2420 150 years ago, you can put a chicken's head on a clown's body and people will pass it off as realistic depiction of an alien. We have the internet today, and many more people have better understanding of what's considered scientifically believable. Prometheus was close, it is plausible to have the engineers be the seeders of life on earth, but then they decided to make them human-grey-aliens, have roman culture, and are angry teachers of our oh-so-violent species. The whole thing felt like something out of a 1950s alien abduction autobiographies written by some uneducated red-neck. Might as well add in tin-foil hats and anal probes. Can't feel fear if they failed at basic plausibility.
The stand alone scene where one of the colonists steps on a plant that releases a black floating somehting that goes into his ear.... I never understood what that had to do with anything - and why was he the only only who it happened for? Seemed pointless to me.
I also thought it was stupid that all insect, and animal life is gone but there are loads of plants???? Don't most plants require some sort of pollination? So which movie of the franchise is your favourite?
@@Geeklectica A lot of things didn't add up in Covenant... and while we all get older, we're not that easy to please. It is so hard to choose between Alien and Aliens because they are so different (proves that it is possible to make a different movie and still keep a good story and atmosphere). I was so hyped when I first time watched the trailer for Aliens that my friends warned me not to be disappointed, but boy I wasn't disappointed!). I choose Resurrection above Alien 3. Even though it's a but silly, but I liked the way Jean-Pierre Jeunet sneaked some humor into it and still it was scary. And last... I wasn't thrilled about Prometheus. It opened so many doors, asking more questions than it answered... we all urged to know where the Space Jocky origined from, but buying us cheap off that the exosceleton was a Engineers spacesuit, if I have understand it correct, I simply couldn't buy that. But after wacthing Covenant I suddenly liked Prometheus more that I did at first. I have only watched Covenant once... I was simply so angry with the David character. Thank for your view on the francise and upload 👍👌
Yep, no subtlety here lol I think this was made for tiktokers that need everything explained and shown. You're right, the first film left it mostly to our imagination, lurking in the shadows. This one did not - and it was lesser for it. And a perfect example of how to assemble a stellar cast of great actors - and make a shit film!! 🤣🤣
I think it was self-indulgence on Ridley's part. He can't write for Toffee, is not an ideas man and where he excels is directing. Unfortunately, as a character in Picard (the bad seasons) would say - "Sheer Fluffing Hubris".
What If we replace H.P. lovecraft's deities with Roman gods, will his stories still count as cosmic horror? In my opinion, ambiguous backstory is not necessarily the core of a good cosmic horror story. HP lovecraft gave detailed backstory to his creatures without losing any of the dread and mystique. What made covenant bad is a combination of what that backstory is, and visual issues: the engineers are just humanoids with greek/roman culture instead of actually being "alien" creatures like in the original. They even seem to "think" the way we do. The xenomorphs are presented as having simple enough biological functions for humans to create, as opposed to beings that are born from technology/culture that are far removed from our own. The beings of prometheus/covenant feel much less alien/scary because they mirror humanity too much. Those movies are just darker versions of star-trek or avatar where all sentient beings are basically humans with some visual tweaks and one-dimensional mindsets, while non-sentient beings are just mindless killing machines without any nuances.
I agree - but sometimes we need not to over-explain. And when you consider that it wasn't Ripleys story hence cameron doing the sequel. I think it's hubris on his part.
@@Geeklectica I agree that over explaining things can be detrimental to a degree, but keep in mind that we can find multi hour video documentaries explaining the details of HP lovecraft's creatures. with 71 stories across the whole mythos, it never felt like the mystery is lost. It's about how the lore is expanded, not the act of expansion itself that is the problem. With covenant, we are presented as the center of everything. That's boring. For all I know, the biomechanical creatures are ACTUAL biomechanoids. A sinister marriage of flesh and machine. The androids sees xenos as perfect organisms because they are a bridge between living and non-living things. This is far more fascinating and mysterious concept than what we got.
Honestly, I wouldn’t even give this film the credit of being visually stunning. I think the cinematography is average at best most of the time, and the CGI creature effects look like they could’ve come from an animated film, with no life or weight to them at all.
@@Geeklectica I do agree with that to an extent, but even that is ruined, with lines like “I’ll do the fingering”. And why do I have to watch him make out with himself? 😂

@@Geeklectica *Original 1979* and I separate Two because I don't recall *Dan O' Bannon* giving his blessings to James Cameron and I strictly defer to *Dan O' Bannon* may he rest in peace. I have absolutely no respect for 3 and 4.
@@Khultan I have respect for William Gibson's Script. Now that's a movie I'd have liked to have seen.... I also love Mark Verhoevens comics set 10 years after the original.
@@Geeklectica I'll have to look into those. What irritates me about Ridley Scott is that he goes around giving this idea that he created alien. But you look at his own stuff and you hold them up together and think, NO WAY, does Prometheus and Covenant possess any of the mystique, alure, intrigue, tension, intensity, horror of *alien 1979*
@@Khultan Yeah I've had this conversation in my comments (repeatedly). GREAT DIRECTOR - Visual Artist. Not an ideas man or a writer.
Not just lost. I think when Ridley does anything but direct and has any say over the writing he's that one guy that drove into the sea because of SAT NAV. Thanks for watching - So which movie is your favourite? I'm working on Alien (the original at the moment).
@@Geeklectica Aliens (James Cameron) will always be my favorite. The original film does absolutely have a place, though.
And agreed on Ridley Scott doing anything other than directing. He seems to be generally bad with storylines and character development.
@@KingUltraMayne Well it's Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon we have to thank for the idea/story. :) - Aliens is my favourite SciFi Action movie and probably the most quotable film in history. Whereas Alien is my favourite SciFi Horror. :) I also think Aliens is Cameron at the top of his game.
The franchise went bad when Giler and Hill stopped 'producing' it.
And went on to just 'milking' it.
I will admit the Fassbender's performance is awesome but even he can't save it :)
I have watched reviews. Yes, but not the entire film. Pretty much the FIRST in the whole franchise.
Prometheus was kinda like witnessing a vomited train wreck, in a 3D theater LOL!
R.I.P. Ridley Scott
Covenant was worse. :) Unfortunately.
2001 - Unwatchable!?! Tis pure heresy! I like that in alien they made actually landing on a planet quite an ordeal.
I liked the movie. Although I agree with a lot of the points you make, especially regarding the Xenomorph.
@@SzTz100 if you liked it that’s great. I’m all for people enjoying media. 👍
@@tampakmurni I completely agree and I love Lovecraft! I think it's because Ridley whilst a superb Director - can't write for toffee.....
Honestly, I wouldn’t even give this film the credit of being visually stunning. I think the cinematography is average at best most of the time, and the CGI creature effects look like they could’ve come from an animated film, with no life or weight to them at all.
I do think some of the cinematography is good. And Fassbender is as always a very good actor. But the rest..... Utter Tosh!
@@Geeklectica I do agree with that to an extent, but even that is ruined, with lines like “I’ll do the fingering”. And why do I have to watch him make out with himself? 😂
@@Geeklectica I think up to that point, a bit of copium had me convinced this was somehow better than Prometheus. Once that happened, though, I said out loud in the theater “what the Hell am I watching?” Lol
Ummm David did not create the original "wolf" as he called it. He guesstimated it almost getting it right. And well the xenomorph do grow that fast,it wasnt even a day later when it grew from chestbutster to big chap in less than 24 hours.
Yes, but 6 - 12 hours is a lot longer than 5 minutes. :) But thanks for commenting.
I know how you feel , the passage of time acts more weird in movies. 😉
@@orionblack It certainly does. I always think time, place and distance are fundamental world-building aspects. 😅
Just discovered your channel a few days ago. Excellent stuff. And I wholeheartedly agree that Covenant is the worst ALIEN movie by far.
@@42ndStreetMatthew It’s pretty bad. Ridley can’t write for toffee! Glad to have you and thanks for watching 👀 👍
Alien Covenant made me like Prometheus... or at least prefer it by far.
Apart from the character that I came to dislike the most I can't remember one single name of the others... not one. Killing off Shaw was the worst decision.
I don't think having SMOLLET aged well either :)
In my alien world….only the first and second movies exist….im hoping for Romulus…but I’m very cautious as to the results…I have a feeling I’m going to be disappointed…😮
Let's hope not. I'm cautiously optimistic. Nothing will ever have the impact of the first two. Both Cameron and Scott at the top of their game. But it could be fun.
I agree, Covenant was almost a complete dumpster fire. It had great potential. Also @12:00 you nailed it, from face hugger to chest burst in about the same amount of time to make a pb&j sandwich.
It is amazing how fast it is represented, it's literally five minutes with everyone's not-so-fourite Captain. As a certain Star Trek character would say in Picard - I really think as far as Ridley is concerned this whole movie is an example of "Sheer F"king Hubris"......
There are only 2 Alien movies. The rest is fanfiction. Change my mind.
Three. There're three main alien movies, you Cameronized zombie
@@mustaproductionsperez6726 Nah Alien 3 is okayish with the "directors" cut, but it was just such a huge development hell fuckfest, that it was ruined.
I appreciate the bleak tone and the premise, but the end product is such a big MEH.
Alien 4 is campy fun, Ron Pearlman is always cool, but i can not take it seriously.
The rest? {Projectile vomiting intensifies}
Say what you will about Resurrection's screwball tone and imagery, but at least *that* movie had something coherent to say about playing God.
Thoughs about Alien Romulus? What you know so far...
They Need to Make ALIEN$$
No. Just No. How can you make a bad movie 2... count them... 2 Michael Fassbenders and an actual alien.
And everyone is an idiot and the Alien looks hideous,
Huge Alien fan here....i don't see Prometheus and Covenant as being canon because they are so shitty 😑

The franchise is so dead, I have zero interest in Romulus whatsoever. None of the leads have an iota of onscreen presence that Sigourney brought to the table over 40yrs ago. Rapace and the other one are just like substitute teachers to me.
Romulus: I was actually disappointed they went for a female lead again. But I think it will be a good popcorn flick. I'm very cautiously optimistic.
@Geeklectica they seem to be obsessed with Ripley clones, maybe it's time for another idea. An alien outbreak on earth with just regular civillians surviving would be more interesting as Its always space miners/colonists etc.
