  • Ride of Steel at Six Flags Darien Lake is the original Intamin hyper coaster. This is New York's tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster. This ride opened back in 1999 as Superman, but it lost the Man of Steel branding after Six Flags sold the park. This hyper coaster features a few good airtime hills, some large helixes, and a cool setting over the water. But how does it stack up to the newer hypers? Find out in this review!

    One thing I noticed with Intimin is the love to highlight the speed. And one of the best way to do it is to put you right down near the ground. And you see it in a lot of their coasters.

    On the 2nd day, when the seatbelts were added, the trim was also added on the 2nd to last bunny hill. This was before said to be the steel rolling thunder hill.

    This is a little random, but I found the first helix on Superman at SFA was hitting a lot harder this year for some reason. In past years, I would never grey out at all there, but this year, it was a hard greyout to near blackout every single ride. I find it strange because it was harder than I ever grey out on I305

    This is a really excellent review. I really appreciate the effort you put into it. I’ve only written the version at Six Flags America once this past Labor Day and I really enjoyed it, and my only regret is that I did not have enough time to rewrite it. I’ve heard about the issue at Darien lake with one train ops and that is a shame because I feel like the park has great potential if they would just make a few adjustments to their operations. Hopefully someday I will be able to visit the park and ride this one

      It's neat to see why the America one's layout is set-up how it is.

    I'm glad that this ride led to the New England version being built, which I ride more than any other coaster. It's a shame that one wasn't cloned because it seems Intamin learned from the flaws with this version, taking out the dead spots and making the elements tighter and more forceful.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  Рік тому +1

      Hyperion sort of feels like the spiritual successor to SFNE's Superman with how the layout is set-up.

      @@CanobieCoaster A lot of elements from the original Ride of Steel got repackaged into newer Intamin hypers and gigas. The ending airtime hills are similar to Superman The Ride, the large airtime hills between the helixes are similar to Millennium Force, and the turn immediately after the drop is similar to I-305.

    Darien lake used to have two trains on this coaster. They used to have two on everything. The entire park has fallen into disrepair. The 90s and very early 2000s saw a bunch of expansion in all directions at the park. Nowadays the crowds are much smaller

      The owners are too cheap to properly maintain anything so they cannibalize one train to use parts on the other. It'll be interesting to see what happens when they run out of parts to do that with because I highly doubt they'll invest in new parts or new trains.
      Heck, just look at the state of Mind Eraser with its frankentrain. The seats are all miscolored because they used to be from separate trains, some of which (from what I understand) were taken from broken SLC trains the park purchased just to use for parts. These people have to rank among the cheapest owners in the industry that haven't gone out of business yet.

    What an absolutely underated looking gem, especially as the first one. It may have some straight track here and there but don't forget how old this ride is. The airtime it does have is still really good floater on the camelback and strong sustained standing airtime at the end. Definitely a fun layout especially woth the setting over the water compared to SFAs. It could definitely be better but it's a great fir being the parks best.

    I love this vid. Ride of Steel has a great paint aesthetic, it reminds me of the nearby Buffalo Bills.
    I would love to see a Flying Coaster that had the helixes plus the straight-away over the water. That incident about the man who was thrown off hurts my heart as it could have been prevented multiple times.
    D-Lake is an underrated place to ride the rides. Great scenery. By far, the best coaster there, hands down.

    I really enjoy this ride, but I’ll point out that the name is dumb. Without Superman, the term “Ride of Steel” just doesn’t make sense.

    I prefer the one at SF America. I like the secluded setting better, and it seems stronger to me, but Darien Lake's is still great. I got 6 rides on my half day at Darien Lake on an 80-degree June day, including a night ride. I'm one of the few that actually likes the straight track. It forces me to realize how amazing that sustained speed is, and it's a great prelude to one of the best airtime moments on any coaster. My only nitpick with the layout is the 2nd helix.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  Рік тому

      If the ride replaced that straight track and second helix, it would be near perfect.

    This is definitely the best rollercoaster at Six Flags Darien Lake.
    I'm not sure how it compares with the other best coasters in New York (Boulder Dash and Phobia: Phear coaster)
    New York is really not a good state for rollercoasters because of the parks in nearby states (Six Flags Great Adventure, Hersheypark).
    They still should've gotten a B&M.

    I really like Ride of Steel. I love the speed sensation. It's smooth and I love how it's a long ride. Underrated coaster. I just wish Darien Lake ops were better. 3 people in front of me in a row takes about 20 minutes to get through... Pretty bad. As a result I only got 2 total rides on this thing in the morn before it broke down later for the rest of the day.

    Bruh just looking at ride of steel is how its straight track goes over the lake while six flags americas goes over a field…REALLY INTAMIN??
    I would also like it to get a new color scheme where it will have the same blue supports color repainted…but instead the track would be a silver color and the trains can look like bullets
    And also…can anybody tell me if this park is usually crowded on Saturdays??

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  Рік тому

      I think the biggest issue is that the coasters only run one train. That can make the lines move slow most days. I imagine this queue could easily be an hour on Saturdays.
