The motor leads can be slipped out (friction fit) from where they connect to the truck's metal side frames to attach leads to the decoder. We should have detailed instructions available in the next month or so, either as a video or a written process (but hopefully both!)
When we began the P42 project we wanted to make sure to create a product that was reliable and would function beyond expectations out of the box - add-on parts, weathering, and custom detailing can always be added by the experienced modelers who desire them, but if a model doesn’t run well, can’t pull, or arrives broken in the box with half of its detail parts snapped and rattling around in the tray, that creates an undesirable model railroading experience for all involved.
Ya know the thing that’s funny is that I’ve actually seen Amtrak P42 68 3 times! Although now 68’s phase 6 paint is very faded and she’s also pretty dirty as well. And 68 still has her original GE mechanical bell. She also has a newer raised letter hybrid K5LA or a raised letter hybrid K5L horn witch is rare!
The sound schemes are both being provided by their respective companies - ESU and Soundtraxx so they won't be identical (since they do their own recording), but both will be recorded from the real world locomotive.
Did you have any problems? I set up my version of the California Zephyr for Christmas. I have two p42’s. One ran for two Christmas’s, the other for one, and I can’t get any help with trouble shooting.
I second the request for some VIA motive power. Kato (HO & N) and Atlas (HO only) are all I buy now ( motive power). I agree with you modeling philosophy. The most important part is to have a good running Locomotive. I would have liked to hear the sound of the Loco running as the 2 motors must be noisier than one ( but I could be wrong and your engineering is remarkable).
The 8-pin socket in the board is not a DCC plug - it IS used for DCC installation along with some other modifications, all of which we will outline in both video and written formats when the locomotive is released for those modelers who wish to put their own DCC in rather than purchase one of our pre-installed ready to run DCC offerings.
Awesome! its about time the truck motors got to the USA models. I have a question can the couplers be switched out for Kadee couplers? I notice with my kato material handling cars this can not be done, does this model allow that?
The first shipment has been released to hobby stores and distributors who pre-ordered - the remaining shipment will be arriving at the end of this month and should be more widely available after August 1st.
The locomotives shouldn't need much of a break in, if at all. For DC use, of course I would have to suggest that you use our own excellent #22-014 Kato Power Pack :)
Cool! Can't wait to get my 2 that are coming with LokSound. A couple questions: will the GPS dome work the same way with the pre-installed sound decoders or will the light settings be function-toggled? And is that an 8-pin DCC decoder plug I see on the circuit board---in other words are the DC models DCC-ready?
just got my very first KATO P42 yesterday in a trade. I got Amtrak 161 which I want to renumber to 163. also, wondering if KATO will do a paint scheme run of VIA Rail Canada P42's ??
Does DCC version have working ditch light? The shell is very detailed and looks very nice. However, I noticed missing wipers. It looks very strange without wipers on cab windows? I haven't seen it on any picture. Are they in the box and must be installed or you just skipped this detail ?
Will the sound equipped models have prototypical flashing ditch lights? Also I noticed in your online store that the sounds will be prototypical. Will the sounds be exactly the same between the Soundtraxx and the Loksound versions?
Will the DCC/Sound models be prototypical, in that when the horn is blown the ditch lights will flash? And will the ditch light be able to be made to flash on command separate from the other lights?
It's a nice model, and while I don't mean to sound negative, I notice Kato left off many extra details which have been standard on other Kato HO diesels for years, things like windshield wipers, MU hoses, etc? Was there a reason for this?
We have directions on our website for how to put your own DCC into your P42. It should work with any four (or more) function DCC decoder with an 8-pin connector and at least one (1) additional function wire (green or purple)
Will different numbers of the engines besides the current numbers be avaible later? Beacase I want a specific number for my California Zephyr. I want the numbers 14 and 134. Please take my suggestion into consideration. Thank you.
Ok. Thank you. As always you respond to your viewers. I do like the P42 and I am getting that and some Superliners. The cars look great. I hope that they run as good as they look!
Hi I purchased 2 of your P42's last week actually. and I have a question. I programmed both of my P42's to be on the same address (my rr club doesn't allow mu'ing loco together anymore because it causes slot max, my rr club uses Digitrax) how would i go about setting my trailing locomotive to have it lights off and the lead unit to have only the headlight on with the DCC Tsunami Sound Decodered versions of your P42's. I hope to hear back from you soon.
ajin precision of Korea, makes a brass dual mode locomotive ,P-32 a/c dm,but is sells, for over $ 800.00.according to the railroad model craftsmen,on the back cover page,Metro-North,or Conn, dot, and Amtrak.
Thanks for the reply. One question: regarding the sound-equipped version, can we expect the sound samples to have been recorded from a real P42 and feature a correct K5LA air horn?
I can't find one for sale. How do you get them from your website? I am new to KATO products so I would like to know. I am in NY so I need to know any possible hobby shops to get these and the sound and DCC equipped ones later.
Very nice model. I look forward to seeing them myself. However, I am very disappointed that you are doing the fiberglass nose with revised headlight package. I will not be buying any of these because I do not model Phase V. I was looking forward to buying some undecorated models to paint and decal myself, but the nose configuration dates the model. Are there any plans to do a model in the as-delivered configuration?
As long as you don't have the locomotives on the track at the same time when you're programming them, there should be no problem giving them different settings even if they've got the same address.
Hi, I accidentally dropped my P42... the rear truck is really lose because it is missing one of the clips so I’m wondering if I can buy a rear truck or if they are not available for purchase. The reason I’m asking is the train can’t run smooth with the truck being this loose
What the hell is a train without windshield wipers and rearview mirrors? Talk about nice models. The ditch lights don't flash, all the lights dim. I have to say, you could've done a hell of a lot better!!!
How much is the price on the new P-42 diesels,i know they are not cheap, priced and made of quality components, also are they going to come out with a dual mode model, for people who want to model,Metro-North,and CDOT.?Thanks.
I kinda think the Scewdriver thing is a dumb idea, because you can just simply use decoder functions to turn the lights on and off, like regular locomotives have, and what other DCC locos have in HO, just saying.
Keon's Trains sadly no one can make the veterans unit because of copyright issues. Micro scale made the decal set then was ordered to destroy all of them.
Saw one of these today at my LHS. They do run very nicely, the lighting is cool, but the lack of usual Kato detail and fuzzy paint seperation kept me from buying one. Sorry but this HO P42 is a disappointment, despite its fancy new drive system. One step forward (drive), but maybe three steps back (sparse detail, paint, lack of accurate R&D in certain areas, etc). Not sure how they let this happen. I don't buy the earlier comment about broken parts. Kato usually includes these parts separately.
You did great with this engine, and THANK YOU for no glittery silver paint that plagued another "brand." Please more road numbers!!!

Why do all that work and not even include windshield wipers???
That's correct. The rotary switch is specifically for Analog/DC modes. In DCC the lighting controls can be mapped to decoder functions.
The sound schemes are both being provided by their respective companies - ESU and Soundtraxx so they won't be identical (since they do their own recording), but both will be recorded from the real world locomotive.
I CANT WAIT FOR P42 HERITAGE #66. THANK YOU KATO! I have the athern one and the motor already went out...
Got one, amazing unit still even 8 years later. Any chance of doing a VIA since Athearn backed out of their Genesis 2.0 model ?
I also want to know the answer
Did you have any problems?
I set up my version of the California Zephyr for Christmas.

NO GLITTERY SILVER PAINT!! SCORE for Kato!!!! Now create every road number out there for them :)
Great work KATO.
SWEET!
Got 3 ordered with sound and DCC

Really high pulling power...but in an Amtrak engine...?... Why?
Should have put that new (to HO) in a fright loco so you can see it's full potential.
awesome, I will be getting some N scale Kato Amtrak stuff soon. Also your guy's new Kato BN SD40-2's are amazing!
Fantastic! Can't wait. Thanks!
Will Kato be doing the 'unbolted' version of the nose to replicate the earlier variations at some point?
They have already been shipped to hobby stores and distributors as of last week.
They'll be arriving in the US at our warehouse at the end of this month.
The two Speakers is a BIG plus, Thanks Kato. I wish you would put KD couplers on from the factory. Bill
In a contest of awesomeness, which would win- a Santa Fe F3 with blue and yellow paint, or the Amtrak P42?
What is the status of the coreless motor trucks for other HO scale locomotives?
Agreed Kato, more Phase V road numbers please, or an unnumbered painted unit. I want a fleet of 20 P42's.
Oh that's awesome!! Thanks!!
The P42 has NMRA standard coupler boxes so you can put any coupler you like on it.
I preordered all latest P42 models. When should I expect them? Couple of those were supposed to be released in March. But nothing in mail yet.
When you pulled that bogie off, that was a bit of a surprise!
Awesome! its about time the truck motors got to the USA models. I have a question can the couplers be switched out for Kadee couplers? I notice with my kato material handling cars this can not be done, does this model allow that?
Maybe in the future - we're trying to focus on getting this first version out onto the market first!

also, wondering if KATO will do a paint scheme run of VIA Rail Canada P42's ??
It will be offered with either Tsunami sound or ESU Loksound.
How tight are the R1 radius curves (I'm only familiar with inches of radius)?
Does DCC version have working ditch light?
The shell is very detailed and looks very nice. However, I noticed missing wipers. It looks very strange without wipers on cab windows? I haven't seen it on any picture. Are they in the box and must be installed or you just skipped this detail ?
excellent product, KatoUSAinc but this unit comes with full interior cabin?
The GPS dome function should not be needed on the DCC equipped versions, and all lights will be operable through DCC function controls as expected.
Will the sound equipped models have prototypical flashing ditch lights? Also I noticed in your online store that the sounds will be prototypical. Will the sounds be exactly the same between the Soundtraxx and the Loksound versions?

The sound units should be shipping at the end of next month.
Are you guys going to be making Amfleet II phase IVb coaches in ho scale?
It's a nice model, and while I don't mean to sound negative, I notice Kato left off many extra details which have been standard on other Kato HO diesels for years, things like windshield wipers, MU hoses, etc? Was there a reason for this?

When are the sound equipped P42s coming?
We will be posting video looks at both the ESU and Soundtraxx equipped locomotive versions as soon as we have final samples in hand.
The real #68 has ICTS control on the top.
How come Kato didn't wire the ditch lights to alternate whenever the horn is sounded ?
Please respond to my question on if there will be different numbers for the P42s than the current numbers later on.
Will different numbers of the engines besides the current numbers be avaible later? Beacase I want a specific number for my California Zephyr. I want the numbers 14 and 134. Please take my suggestion into consideration. Thank you.
Do the lighting features with the dome do that on the DCC & Sound versions?
No, on the DCC+sound versions, you control the lights via Standard DCC programming functions so the rotating switch on the roof is disabled.
Ok. Thank you. As always you respond to your viewers. I do like the P42 and I am getting that and some Superliners. The cars look great. I hope that they run as good as they look!

When will the dcc decoders be out for them? Because i dont have enough to buy them with dcc and sound already installed.

One question: regarding the sound-equipped version, can we expect the sound samples to have been recorded from a real P42 and feature a correct K5LA air horn?
Will Kato make a model of Amtrak's Veterans #42 Locomotive?
Yes.
Are you planning on releasing the Phase IV Anniversary locomotive and the Veterans Units? Also, these locomotives are FANTASTIC!
I can't find one for sale. How do you get them from your website? I am new to KATO products so I would like to know. I am in NY so I need to know any possible hobby shops to get these and the sound and DCC equipped ones later.

Hey, KATOUSA,
Will you be releasing or thinking of making an N Scale Norfolk Southern C44-9W?(Dash 9)
Hi. Any word on the status of the P42's with sound? I thought they were suppose to arrive last month.
how many are in stock when they come out next week ?
As long as you don't have the locomotives on the track at the same time when you're programming them, there should be no problem giving them different settings even if they've got the same address.

Will the ESU have their new P42 sound in it?
could there be all the p42 amtrak phases coming soon?
or it could be one phase
So when will you do a video of them for youtube?
What the hell is a train without windshield wipers and rearview mirrors? Talk about nice models. The ditch lights don't flash, all the lights dim. I have to say, you could've done a hell of a lot better!!!
Ditto on that ma brotha
Will Kato be making anymore n scale CSX locomotives in the future?
Hay kato wheres the sideview mirrors like the athearns
When will we see ho scale IVB Superliner II cars? (including the transition sleeper)
How much is the price on the new P-42 diesels,i know they are not cheap, priced and made of quality components, also are they going to come out with a dual mode model, for people who want to model,Metro-North,and CDOT.?Thanks.
l just got 5 p42s 3gennis and two locksound they are awsome
On the Tsunami equipped sound units, does the bell start with the horn like the Loksound ones?
Is there any way to change the CV's so the bell doesn't ring when I honk?
Could that be installed with a tsunami decoder in it?
Are the ditch lights lighted separately so flashing can be enabled in DCC?
Does this p42 have dcc and sound
Because I need need one
They are available for purchase with DCC and Sound, yes.

Ok thx

do you guys have one without sound or just with sound
Does the dc only also have a 8pin slot for a dcc decoder?
It does not. We have directions on how you can install one into the engine on our website: katousa.com/HO/P42/maint/DCC-install.html
@@KatoUSAinc Thank you!!!
Why can’t you all make the sc-44 charger in ho scale and n scale
Alrighty thanx :)
What is the price of this locomotive in Indian ruppes
Maybe that's in DC mode. I agree, unnecessary in DCC.
I got the passenger cars, preo ordered the 73 ft baggage car in the new sceme...just gotta free up 400.00 for 2 of these :)
Please see my response to silkensky for the answer to that question.
Keon's Trains sadly no one can make the veterans unit because of copyright issues. Micro scale made the decal set then was ordered to destroy all of them.
Well that's dumb! I wonder why it's copyrighted against making models of it
Keon's Trains Yeah. Its the yellow ribbon.
That's disappointing...
Keon's Trains Yeah it is. Same with the NS veterans unit. The only ones we will ever see will have to be custom.
Nice Version I run DC

Could you fit that on the ho track
Yes, the HO P42 will work on any HO Gauge track
Thank you very much
You have a really great video
i just got one from caboosehobbies!
They have already been shipped to hobby stores and distributors as of last week.
