Passed my extra exam on Saturday morning. The 891 dose look like a really nice radio.
Thanks Paul. I have too much studying to do. Glad your mom is getting better. Merry Christmas!
I'm sure glad Mom is home now, I know it's a relief. Happy Christmas and Merry Holidays to you and the family!
Thanks George. Merry Christmas to you.
Yeah, so happy your mom is home. Continued prayers and blessings to you and your mom. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. 😊😀😃
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you.
So many functions, I prefer simplicity, but, thank you for the tour. Glad your mom is home. Have a great weekend.
Thanks buddy. This thing is quite confusing. But using HRD makes it as simple as my 7300.
10:03 Correct me if I'm wrong but 08-11 Data Out Level is the Audio output level for the USB interface to your PC and 16-03 HF Power is where you set the transmit wattage.
Very informative video. Just purchased an FT-891! So, I am watching some UA-cam vids to get a jump on operations. This video very was helpful. Tnx...73!
The 891 is an awesome radio. The only downside is how deep the menus are. I reccomend using HRD if you plan to use this radio as a base. It really makes it easy.
What is HRD ?, thanks (IZ6FWF)
BEWARE: "Data-Out-Level" is NOT the output Power! The putput power settings are starting at 16-01 to 16-06
Great Video ! Thanks !!!
I love this radio. Best radio since the 706.
I'am happy your mom is at home again!!! We will keep her in our prayers. 73 de PU5NSF - Nelson
Thank you
Nice radio. Enjoyed the review. 73 Paul.
Thanks
Great info, thanks! I also have the 891 and am just learning how to use it. Can you go over the interconnects to get it up and running in the digital modes? For example, I know that the IC-7300 has a built-in sound card, so you only need to use a USB cable from the radio to the computer. But how does that work on the FT-891? Anyway, always great info, thanks!

The 891 is exactly the same as the 450 when it comes to digital modes. So this video applies.
thormusique the 891 doesn’t have a internal soundcard. The USB port on the back only delivers rig control not audio. The data 6pin din port transmits audio, so you use a usb interface to “convert” the 6pin din to usb
@@MrC-Hacking Ah, I see. This is very helpful, thanks very much!
I have the 891 and it is a great radio. I haven't gotten into digital with it yet, so I was curious as to what soundcard you are using? Thanks! K8JLW
Came hear to find that out. Still looking
Cool ,More Hidden Gem electronics please...
Can the 891 do digital in/out through the front headphone jack to a regular USB sound card, instead of using the rear digital port?
rgfuller the 891 doesn’t have a internal soundcard. The USB port on the back only delivers rig control not audio. The data 6pin din port transmits audio, so you use a usb interface to “convert” the 6pin din to usb.
Paul can you make a video about how to make a simple amplifier circuit?
I don't have the REC functions. How do I display them?
did you run into the 891's issue of the "noise" / clicking/beeping noise from using CAT control over usb?
I did not
A "crap ton" of menu items. I like it.
What you didn't show is how you are connecting the rig to the computer. You jump from talking about the rig menus to talking about Ham Radio Deluxe. All you say is that you connect "with a USB cable". Well??? I don't really need you to tell me how to operate SOFTWARE. Duh. Software is software, and it usually comes with instructions and such. WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IS HOW TO CONNECT THE RIG TO THE COMPUTER!!!!! AND you completely failed this. How about editing your video and spending much more time on CONNECTING???!!!
I'm a new Tech, now studying for the general. This is a great rig to grow into as you progress in Ham Radio. I started playing with the features to familiarize myself with the rig, before I got licensed and I'm excited to now get on the air with it. 73`s!
I bought a 891 and so far , I luv it.... what a awesome little rig, works great on the base antennas and out in the field, plus it has a ton of extras built in and works great with JS8 and HRD in all modes all the way from qrp to 100 watts if needed.
It's a hidden gem. Love the radio.
I have this (just bought) radio. I'm looking to set an swr count on the screen. I can't find it in the menus. Thanks.
Press "F" it's under PTO
Thanks 73 @@learnelectronics
Glad your Mum's doing better.
Thank you
73 from W8RAD!
Daky data key?
Great news about your mom! 73's KC1KCI
I use Yaesu SCU 17
So question.... If someone wanted, could the MARS update be installed in this radio??
Yes
Cool...I'm still tryin to figure stuff out while I study for my general class. That FT 891 looks pretty sweet!!!
Makes it into a very nice CB
Menu 8-11 has NOTHING to do with power output! It is the audio volume output to your interface.🙈Menu 16-3 is where you set the power output level for digital modes.
Don't use DATA for FT8 use SSB mode. See page 65 advanced user manual
belay that quewtion. I found the answer
Maybe a tad less reviewing things that just really have nothing to do with digital modes and more on the modes and getting them to work (hardware, settings, etc).
Missing feature: soundcard! Separation kit is crap. Set up for digital modes unwieldly and never 100% it will work twice in a row.
21st comment. İ cri everytiem.
By the way That brand name reminded me Yasuo from LoL.
Wow thanks for the hearth. This is first time i got a hearth! Yaay!
"so I'm going to focus on the data mode stuff". Oh here, let me show you how to record your voice for calling CQ.
everybody's a critic
The giggly picture is giving me motion sickness sorry got to go.
I own this radio. Big mistake. This radio is MISSING a built-in soundcard. Digital interface required. Two USB cables and one Data cable plus interface box. Cable salad! Not suitable for digital modes in the field. Separation kit requires TWO cables, one to connect head to body, and on LONG cable for Mic because Mic is connected to body and not head. See Icom IC-7200. I also own an Icom IC-7200, also an entry level, relatively inexpensive TRX. It requires ONE usb cable to connect TRX to PC. The rig is on the heavy side, so I prefer to use it at home. Too bad. The simple no fuss radio stays at home, and the cable challenged FT-891 goes into the field. The world is sometimes really backwards. 73!
Well ... you can't really say that the radio is "missing" a built-in soundcard when it wasn't built with one. The 891 is more portable and is HF-only - don't try to make it something it's not.
Hard to watch video, you sound as if you have just ran a marathon.
Sorry, way too much garbage!
To what are you referring as garbage?
@@learnelectronics Maybe a little too strong but I want straight to the point instructions. I watch dozens, hundreds of videos looking for ideas about antennas.
